I bought this and love it but I'm having doubts - I am 50 - is this mutton dressed as lamb territory?
I am size 10 and 5'2" so it is almost knee length on me, fits very well but but but....

I’d look like Grayson Perry if I wore that.

littleblackcat247 · 16/01/2025 05:16

It's a straight no from me. But I don't really like the dress at all.

There was a top I love but it has not been for sale anywhere I have seen in the UK, I agree that would be ideal. https://sea-ny.com/products/drea-top

Stunning. I’d wear that and I’m older than 50 and a size 14 (so absolutely enormous according to a previous poster!).

Is it a £200 dress, when it's a £600 dress that is now reduced to £180 ( £20 less than I paid 😱) dress that looks cheap and is too expensive but is also too cheap to have beautiful details and good craftsmanship? I will make of this info what I can 😂😂I'm more confused than when I started tbh.

It was never £600

it was $450 but i doubt anyone actually paid that hence the massive reduction
and it now $270

I don’t think the dress “looks cheap”

but at that price point - i doubt the “quality of fabric and craftsmanship” is that high!

redstroll · 16/01/2025 06:35

You really don’t went to give even the slightest hint of what kind of event, if indeed any, you intend to wear the dress for!

Onelifeonly · 16/01/2025 07:01

Wear it if it makes you feel good. Personally I feel it doesn't come together in itself as a style - the top is too fussy, like the designer is trying to hard to have a lot going on. I don't like it on the model as I feel it makes her look like a little girl, rather than a young woman.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 16/01/2025 07:18

I don't think age has much to do with it. If you like the dress and it suits you, wear it.

Some of the clothes that get recommended on here would make me look frumpy as hell. Some of the stuff I wear would make other 47 year olds look like mutton dressed as lamb. We are all different. We don't all look our age either.

It's a lovely dress too.

User8971 · 15/01/2025 20:37

@Lyn348 I am slim and quite tan but I am not so sure about traditionally beautiful at all - I just love the embroidery and the back of the dress and wonder if I can pull it off. It is a spilt of views - I think it's really interesting. Still not sure tbh 😂
If I am not sure and it was £200 I think it'll have to be a no but I will try it again tomorrow.

It looks like you can’t send it back?

redstroll · 16/01/2025 07:34

EasternStandard · 16/01/2025 07:21

You’re right

Looks like no returns on any sale items

(you paid $50 for delivery OP!)

miserablecat · 16/01/2025 07:38

I'm 47 and I'd consider it (with a stick on bra) with heels!
But I'm shorter than you and probs wouldn't wear if it was below the knee. I think its really pretty

MsWintertowne · 16/01/2025 07:38

From one of the OP’s posts:

I have bought it but not from the US site - in the UK so I can return it if I want.

She says later that she bought it from Net-a-Porter.

WhatToWrite · 16/01/2025 07:39

Love the dress, on any age. Life is short, wear what you love.

I'm 40 and where whatever I like, just like did at 30 and at 20. I'm really hoping this doesn't stop at 50!

WolfFoxHare · 16/01/2025 07:43

I’m not sure why but I always think short flouncy sticky out dresses or skirts work best on the young. Nothing really to do with the length or showing a bit of leg - a shortish straight dress or skirt doesn’t feel as young to me. Maybe it’s because they’re reminiscent of little girls’ flared party dresses from when I was a child.

Saying that, I do admire people who are brave enough to say ‘I like this, I don’t care what other people think’ and wear whatever they please. So if you think it looks good, OP, go for it.

Fair enough.

If you do want views on whether to keep op it’s got too much going on, a bit fussy and short although I know you said it was longer than on the model

It says it was £600 on Net-a-Porter.

It's too small for the Net a Porter model.
Net-a-Porter

User8971 · 16/01/2025 09:24

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle Yeah, it is too small for her and they did the 'headless woman' thing I hate so I got the pic from the Sea site :)

Update - it is boxed up and going back, sad times. I just don't think I will get enough wear from it. Thanks everyone who's given their opinions - much appreciated :)

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie 😂yes well she subscribes to "asian beauty standards" which, for us English women is a road to ruin eh?

Well I hope one of the tops comes up - still gorgeous but possibly more wearable

@bunnybunnybunnybunny I missed your post, I am sorry about your mum, it is no age at all.

English? I thought you were Scottish in a comment earlier... but perhaps you're English and living/working up here of course.
I can confirm as a Scottish woman that yes Asian beauty standards would be a road to ruin for us too. People get so competitive over what constitutes 'petite' 😄 Well done making a decision on the dress and I hope you find something else you love!

User8971 · 16/01/2025 09:41

English people are allowed to live in Scotland 😂😂😂😂

@User8971 Go for it if you like it, I have MS too, yep not worn high heels for years, wobbly enough without them, I totally get it.
