I bought this and love it but I'm having doubts - I am 50 - is this mutton dressed as lamb territory?
I am size 10 and 5'2" so it is almost knee length on me, fits very well but but but....

That dress is so cute! To hell with ‘rules’ about what age, body, accessories etc are right. You do you. If you feel fabulous in it, it’s the right clothing for you.

ForAzureSeal · 15/01/2025 00:01

I like it @User8971 . It's making me think of fancy imperial Japanese armour at the top (in a good way!) So I'm imagining it with maybe an ankle boot with a heavy sole if you're going with a toning it down option. Enjoy wearing it!

User8971 · 14/01/2025 21:51

I love the back of it

It's lovely and sound like you wear it well so go for it.

Time40 · 15/01/2025 00:31

I think it's lovely. If you think it suits you and you feel good in it, go for it. I don't believe that there are all that many clothes that are absolutely "too young" - it depends how they look on the particular person.

krustykittens · 15/01/2025 00:39

It's lovely and if you feel great in it, then wear it and enjoy it! Life is far too short to do anything else. I am 51 by the way, have long hair and happily wear body con dresses with biker boots and huge coats. I am sure some people would clutch their pearls but my clothes make me happy, which is all I want.

Jobsharenightmare · 15/01/2025 00:40

I love it. Go for it.

LadyWiddiothethird · 15/01/2025 00:41

It’s hideous!

Branster · 15/01/2025 01:09

I think it depends how short it comes on you OP. If not very short, then probably OK.
Flats for sure, not heels.
Beautiful back!
I'd overlay something across the see through middle of the front area, as it would look less 'TV show' or 'young things art party' fashion.
My only concern would be the underarms, that gap looks rather big on the model. Does it gape too much when you move or gesticulate?
If it was a maxi dress it would have been more forgiving I think.

Rubies12345 · 15/01/2025 01:26

It says it's non refundable so I'm guessing you have to wear it. It's a lot of money to waste.

The Cecile Bahnsen dresses show more skin but the length makes them look more balanced.

I don't like this dress much- there's too much going on up top with the cap sleeves , the detail on the front (is there a sheer lining at the front? There's an odd crease which looks like fabric not skin ) and the cut out back. A longer, plain skirt would balance it out.

CienAnosDeSoledad · 15/01/2025 01:55

Well, as you asked..

It's very busy, frilly, flouncy, frou frou frock for maybe a 17-20 year old at a push, imo. Sure, anyone can wear it, it's not forbidden, but I most definitely wouldn't. I'm 36. It's not the question of figure/slimness, I look similar to the model in the photos, skinny and slightly taller than her. But I'd feel stupid in it, as if I'm trying to re-live my teens.

At 50, no chance. The mutton thing is not very nice to say, but I'd feel exactly that. There surely are better dresses than this. Nothing against mini or showing skin- go for it- just not all those frills and juvenile 'playfulness'.

Are you actually happy with the title you have chosen for your thread, @User8971?

You don’t think it might be seen as deeply misogynistic and offensive by thousands of readers?

It's times like this I wish MN provided a yawn react button!

Monty27 · 15/01/2025 02:03

@User8971
Not keen on flaunting it type clothes.
I'd have been reluctant to wear it at 30 let alone 50.
I like chic.
It's your call though.

Brinny · 15/01/2025 02:19

Sweet little dress but for me no , you wear what makes you happy not what others think, we are all individuals, we all have different opinions , which is great I put no one in a pigeon hole .

Garlicnorth · 15/01/2025 03:07

I love it! I can't see any reason not to wear it at 50. Or at 70, for that matter, if you still had the kind of body that would work with this style.

I absolutely don't believe in dressing "for your age", only for your individual characteristics and the occasion.

It's a side issue but, as the dress comes up longer on you, it won't have the little-girl vibe that is making some PPs nervous.

Paintedtoenailz · 15/01/2025 03:07

No matter the wearer’s age, it’s a trying too hard dress imo. There’s so much going on, it gives the impression the designer lost focus.

BlueLurker · 15/01/2025 03:10

The dress is really beautiful. I hope you do go for it, and am sure you’ll look stunning.

Slightly saddened tbh by the number of people saying ‘no chance’… it’s no wonder people become invisible as they age. If I see someone older wearing something bold and owning it, my reaction is always wow, you look amazing. (Unless it’s alongside too much plastic surgery, in which case it quickly shifts to pity, but assume that’s not the case here.)

I guess my opinion is tainted by the fact I spent so many younger years shying away and trying not to be noticed, but I absolutely think more ‘screw it, yes’ attitude would be healthy.

bloodyhellthishurta · 15/01/2025 04:00

Definitely no!

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 15/01/2025 04:21

I love it!!!
I'd wear it and I'm 47.

RedPalace · 15/01/2025 04:51

I'd actually quite like the top on its own with worn-in denim and boots. I think it's the top and shirt full skirt that makes it feel very frou frou.

Is there a specific occasion in mind. It feels very summery for opaque tights and flats, I'd see if more with flat sandals and a good tan on holiday.

Chuchoter · 15/01/2025 05:18

'I'd wear with opaque tights and flat black'

So, bottom half librarian and top half teenage girl.

That's not going to be a good look whatever your age.

Zanatdy · 15/01/2025 06:38

I do think it’s more a young women’s style but totally up to you if you want to wear it.

kdramaqueen · 15/01/2025 07:31

It's a beautiful dress and I would say go for it ... if your skin is still youthful looking. So no wrinkled elbows/knees and it needs nude legs too.

StarlightLady · 15/01/2025 07:31

I love the top half and would wear something similar, but (in my 40s) l would want something much longer.

To be candid, your own mirror would be a better judge than anonymous people on here for this one.

User8971 · 15/01/2025 07:50

I'm sorry to have caused such offence. I am a sheep farmer in Scotland and it never occurred to me as anything more than mutton is an old animal and lamb a young one - I am a feminist and didn't see that at all so sorry.

Good point re the tights
I have bought it but not from the US site - in the UK so I can return it if I want.
