I bought this and love it but I'm having doubts - I am 50 - is this mutton dressed as lamb territory?
I am size 10 and 5'2" so it is almost knee length on me, fits very well but but but....

It's not "too young".

I really like the back view. Nothing to do with age but I think it would be great with a ballerina length full skirt or an ankle length straight skirt to balance out the bodice. And probably more wearable.

TooManyChristmasCards · 15/01/2025 15:50

Please give me an example of what you consider "young" and ridiculous on a 40 year old woman let's say?

Because I can't disagree more, age means NOTHING.

You may think age means nothing, I disagree. But I also think body shape and size affects how people look and what looks good on them too.
Some middle aged and older women clearly think that pink or purple hair looks great on them, I think it looks bloody awful, but as they don't know me why would they care.
Young in the context of that particular dress I'd say was up to mid 20s, my daughter is 35 and wears plenty of fashionable short dresses, but wouldn't wear that one.
I see lots of teens going round in outfits that look fine on them but would look ridiculous on a 40 year old let alone a 60 year old( my age) eg tight very cropped sleeveless tops and massive trainers. Dresses and tops with lots of cutouts might be ok for a very toned 40 year old but would probably look like she was a bit try hard, would look awful on a 60 year old. But would also look awful on a fat 20 year old too.
When I recently met my trendy teenage niece she was wearing an outfit comprising a goalie's top, maxi skirt and pointed kitten heels, looked good on her but would look stupid on a 40 year old and even more so on a 60 year old.
People can wear what they like but they can't control what other people think of their clothing choices.

SnidelyWhiplash · 15/01/2025 20:04

I’m not normally one that worries about age appropriate clothing within reason, but I think that dress is for a youngster and would not suit a short person either, sorry.

blueshoes · 15/01/2025 20:15

I am more petite that you OP and a little older but I would not wear it because of chowder arms and mottled ham legs.

Hope I did not offend anyone.

User8971 · 15/01/2025 20:17

@blueshoes 😂

I'm in my 50's and would happily wear it with tights and boots

Same height as OP so it would be knee length on me and I'm very keen on frills being petite

StrawHatLuffy · 15/01/2025 20:24

It's a cute dress. I wouldn't wear it though.
Imagine, if you will, a sock with holes in being filled with 3 day old custard...
🤪

User8971 · 15/01/2025 20:29

@StrawHatLuffy oh god don't set everyone off on the "cute" debate again 😂

That almost reached "mutton", "Cecilie" and "sheep farm" levels of derailment 😂😂

OP posts:
redstroll · 15/01/2025 20:30

is this just for wearing around your farm as you tend to the sheep OP?

or for a specific event?

User8971 · 15/01/2025 20:37

@Lyn348 I am slim and quite tan but I am not so sure about traditionally beautiful at all - I just love the embroidery and the back of the dress and wonder if I can pull it off. It is a spilt of views - I think it's really interesting. Still not sure tbh 😂
If I am not sure and it was £200 I think it'll have to be a no but I will try it again tomorrow.

@MsWintertowne Much as I applaud the concept of designers using a range of sizes and shapes to model those dresses, I think all of those looks are awful. Not the problem of the models, but of the dresses and styling. The off white one (or is it pale pink?) in particular is dreadful - I've seen more stylish shrouds.

Back to the OP dress - the more I look at it, the more I love the back. On a longer, column skirt it would be stunning, or even on a longer, prom style skirt. I still hate the under arm cut out bits though.

Edited

There was a top I love but it has not been for sale anywhere I have seen in the UK, I agree that would be ideal. https://sea-ny.com/products/drea-top

Is it a £200 dress, when it's a £600 dress that is now reduced to £180 ( £20 less than I paid 😱) dress that looks cheap and is too expensive but is also too cheap to have beautiful details and good craftsmanship? I will make of this info what I can 😂😂I'm more confused than when I started tbh.

LostittoBostik · 15/01/2025 21:36

Hmmm.

It's sort of a sixth form prom dress. I don't think it's mutton dressed as lamb as such, more than it's just a bit of an odd choice.

CornishTeaTime · 15/01/2025 21:37

It's a beautiful dress.
The model looks about 17-18.
It's hard to say if too young for you, without seeing you in it.

Maddy70 · 15/01/2025 21:40

Please don't look like you're trying too hard. Nothing is more aging ... Classy is the way to dress

dyedinthewoolcheeseeater · 15/01/2025 21:48

@redstroll your comment seems to imply that a £200 dress is not that special. At what price would you expect good fabric quality and craftsmanship?!

dyedinthewoolcheeseeater · 15/01/2025 21:55

As this thread has shown, people have really different views about this type of thing. For me, it think it's a younger person's dress. But there are lots of things that I know 50yo's will wear (I'm 50, btw) that I personally think look too young. Clearly they don't!
For example, when I watched the last series of "My Mum Your Dad" I was in awe of the outfits most of the women were wearing. To me, they were all wearing clothes that I'd expect to see on someone 25yrs younger. But I know it's just not my taste. I love clothes and buy far too many. I buy what I'm comfortable in, so you do you.

MrsKarlUrban · 15/01/2025 21:57

I think it's really pretty and 50 is no age nowadays! Go for it I'll bet you'll look lovely
I'm about to turn 48 and just got a dress with skulls on and can't wait to wear it
I don't really think about other peoples opinion on style I wear what I like and feel comfy in

MrsKarlUrban · 15/01/2025 22:29

Ooh I love those! ❤️ I've got an Alexander McQueen scarf (second hand mind) x

TooManyChristmasCards · 15/01/2025 22:51

People can wear what they like but they can't control what other people think of their clothing choices.

absolutely

I think it gets sad when people stop wearing what they like because they are worried what other people might think - in the correct environment obviously.

I respect that people like or don't like items, I totally disagree that clothes have an age limit.

itsstillmehere · 15/01/2025 23:10

You're a Scottish sheep farmer and tanned? 😂

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 15/01/2025 23:32

You need to put it on and have a good look in the mirror. It doesn’t seem likely it would suit a woman of 50 but it might be right for you.

Keeponkeepingon9 · 15/01/2025 23:41

I think it's lovely & no you are not to old to wear it if you suit it. There are obviously certain styles not suitable for 50 plus but if it's a dress like this one age has nothing to do with it. If you look great in it that's what counts. 😁

Keeponkeepingon9 · 15/01/2025 23:57

This thread reminded me of one of my DHs relatives at our wedding. She was 70 at the time and wore a purple satin puffball dress a few inches above the knee with a matching bolero over it. She had amazing longish legs and a slim figure & admittedly looked younger than her years. At first I took a side glance then thought wow I hope I can wear this and look so great at 70 so again I say go for it if you suit it. 😁
