Sparkly skinnies - middle age tragic or ok for festive season?

I've ordered a pair of the m&s coated sparkly skinnies and can't decide if they're terrible or a handy article?!
Is it mums' night out vibe? Rod Stewart?!

OP posts:

I think its up to you & should not be judged.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/11/2024 11:56

I like them OP - but I would wear with a long slouchy jumper and flat ankle boots.

whathaveidonehelp · 22/11/2024 12:33

I do like wide legged jeans, but when it comes to dressing them up I can never work out what top to wear. Baggy and tucked in shows off my tummy bulge, untucked looks scruffy, skinny top again shows off tummy. Skinnies are easier as you can cover up that area with a looser top.

Sandwichgen · 22/11/2024 13:52

I’ve ordered the sparkly leggings so my oversized cashmere jumpers can get some wear.

Slol · 22/11/2024 14:40

I think they are nice ! I think they would look dated with a long top, I think with a oversized blazer and heels they would look good.

oldmanandtheangel · 22/11/2024 16:44

Nope. Personally I'd have loved them 15 yrs ago, as jeggings. I'm tall and v leggy and look back on photos and even then they weren't flattering.

I was listening to some Insta self-appointed fashion guru the other day telling us middle aged women what we can't wear any more because it's unflattering or ageing, and it was hilarious how she was ripping to shreds lots of the same things she'd absolutely have been encouraging us to wear just a couple of years ago.

I know the whole point of fashion is that it changes reasonably frequently and is cyclical. I get that it's nice to keep things fresh and exciting every few years, but seriously, if something doesn't flatter us today or makes us look older then it would have done the same thing 5 years ago when it was absolutely everywhere. It makes you realise how much we are manipulated and made to feel insecure just to keep us spending money.

I don't want to look dated or dowdy obviously, but I pick my key 'current' pieces carefully and I won't wear any colour or shape or style just because it's 'in' if I don't feel it's doing me any favours.

I've bought some wide legged jeans and I love them with trainers, but having just lost loads of weight and finally feeling that I can look decent in skinnies (and managing to buy some beautiful knee-high leather boots which actually zip up over my previously chunky calves without making my legs look like tree trunks) I am bloody well going to wear them both and enjoy them.

So true. Also, 'classics' change just like trends do. When biker jackets were all the rage, they were deemed 'classic'. Now they're still available in the shops but mostly beloved of the middle aged cool mum crowd. Like me 😎

You can't tell us that shapes and silhouettes are flattering then a few years later turn on a sixpence and claim the opposite. I'll admit, I think only the slim and leggy look great in a very tight stretchy jean. But there's a world of choice before having to embrace shite catchers. Women generally want to look narrower, not wider.

Babbahabba · 22/11/2024 17:19

I love skinny jeans and jeggings and don't intend to give them up any time soon. Do I look middle aged? Maybe. But I am middle aged- I'm 44. Why is looking your age such a terrible thing?

Babbahabba · 22/11/2024 17:21

Wide legged aren't more flattering for all of us. I wore them all during the late 90s/early 00s when I was young and looking back, they looked bloody awful on me.

Compash · 22/11/2024 20:02

Thing is - I find that the shops have much more variety now than when I was a kid - and that's great! There are skinnies and wides and, I dunno, one short and one long (A Thing now!)... there are Mom jeans and Boyfriend jeans and Dad jeans and Annoying Little Brother jeans for all I know... and a small cross-section of those will suit or flatter your body type... so wear those!

Your body type, mostly, doesn't really change (massive weight loss or gain notwithstanding). So find what you feel good in, it's out there, and enjoy wearing it...

And if someone sniffs 'oh, those jeans aren't very This Season...' who's the dick? Really.

Chipsahoy · 22/11/2024 20:45

Skinnies look hot. These baggy mom jean needs to hurry up and die. And I’m not 18, I don’t want to wear what my teens are wearing
I wouldn’t wear these because I dislike coated jeans but I wear skinny black jeans all of the time.

I have to shoehorn this into every possible conversation I have, because I still laugh every time I think about it. My SIL looked me up and down last year and said:

"I know we don't always see eye to eye..." (massive understatement there) "...but I have to say Carrie that I do kind of admire that about you - you just really don't give a fuck what you look like!"

I just laughed at her and said "Absolutely! Well I certainly don't care about the opinion of someone whose advice I'd never ask for anyway." (Tumbleweed at that point, I don't know if she ever worked out that I was referring to her!)

So @Helpagirlout222 and anyone else debating getting sparkly breeks, go for it, stride out, and be happy with your choices 🤗

I absolutely love this I am crying laughing 🤣

Thank you all, this has really entertained me after a crappy day at work! And thank you to those who took it in the spirit it was intended!!

100% agree

JLM1981 · 23/11/2024 17:33

Love a mum's night out. Love Rod Stewart. I'm in. 43. Would wear 😀

Daffodilpup · 23/11/2024 17:57

I’m 45 and love a bit of sparkle but now having the same thoughts about middle age etc. I’ve been looking at some faux leather trousers but just not sure. I want something more ‘going out’ than black jeans but really stuck in a rut!

PilatesPeach · 23/11/2024 18:29

Really nice OP I'd wear them and in any event, if they make you happy wear them. There is nothing tragic about doing what you want, it is empowering not pathetic X

Oh my god just get them! You'll be gone one day, wear whatever the hell you want.

Sheknowsaboutme · 23/11/2024 18:56

I love them!

Maybe the folks who hate them just don’t have the figure .

no fat arse should be in skinnies

I live in my faux! Next to great ones!

Sheknowsaboutme · 23/11/2024 18:57

And in 50.

MulderitsmeX · 23/11/2024 18:58

The river island ones are excellent,

OP those are nice but they were SO popular c.2012 I think they are a bit dated now, another 5 years and they will be cool again

ARingtoit · 23/11/2024 19:56

Go for it! These would look great with the oversized dark red cardigan from &Other Stories. Add some simple black mules and maybe do a bit of a shirt situation under the cardy for a bit of coverage and more relaxed feel.
