Sparkly skinnies - middle age tragic or ok for festive season?

I've ordered a pair of the m&s coated sparkly skinnies and can't decide if they're terrible or a handy article?!
Is it mums' night out vibe? Rod Stewart?!

I really don't understand why people want to wear stuff that looks cheap and nasty.

bittertwisted · 21/11/2024 20:23

I absolutely love them
And I would Extra them up with heels, a slinky vest, and a slouchy blazer

Helpagirlout222 · 21/11/2024 20:41

Thank you all, this has really entertained me after a crappy day at work! And thank you to those who took it in the spirit it was intended!!

Was a fun thread. I am very much in favour of us fabulous old witches being able to dress as we please and enjoy ourselves. Very funny to read some of the horrified comments 🤣 😆

Yep 😂

Sassybooklover · 21/11/2024 21:44

If you like them, then wear it! I have a pair of faux leather leggings and I am 50! I love them, they look fabulous with heels. No, I wouldn't wear a skirt up around my arse or have loads of cleavage on display but this nonsense that we 'must' be a certain age to wear certain clothes is daft. Life is too short to worry about things like that.

This thread has made me realise I haven't got a 'dated radar'. It all looks fine to me. As a teen, I had a very sensitive one, but that along with my good hearing, seems to be lost with age.

Pretty much every style thread makes me think my dated/ too much/ too trashy/ too try hard/ too young/ too inappropriately radar never existed 😂
And I couldn't care less

Rasputin123 · 21/11/2024 22:23

Oh no I have just ordered these in brown from NEXT as a total change for me as I have lost some weight. I am tall and still a big size. I was going to wear them with flat chunky boots and a ruffle blouse top that covers my waist.

Are they awful I should add that I am late fifties should I return them.

Helpagirlout222 · 21/11/2024 22:36

I definitely wouldn't wear them with the silver boots, but otherwise they look just like the ones I've ordered it! Go for it!

And congrats on the weight loss!

Thanks @Helpagirlout222 no the silver boots would be a step too far.

FloralMoon · 21/11/2024 23:30

I’m 31 and I think nowadays almost anything goes and if you wear something with confidence then it’s gonna look fine - tbh I think these trousers are fab for over the festive party season! I love them!

Get dressed, roll in glitter..good to go.

This is my new motto in life.

Oh shit, I have just ordered these from River Island. Are they also uncool now?

Honestly if they are selling them in RI, which is a young person's shop, then they are fine. Their buyers are not stupid. Just because flares and wider legs are very 'in' at the moment doesn't mean other shapes are suddenly unwearable for anyone under 60.

I was listening to some Insta self-appointed fashion guru the other day telling us middle aged women what we can't wear any more because it's unflattering or ageing, and it was hilarious how she was ripping to shreds lots of the same things she'd absolutely have been encouraging us to wear just a couple of years ago.

I know the whole point of fashion is that it changes reasonably frequently and is cyclical. I get that it's nice to keep things fresh and exciting every few years, but seriously, if something doesn't flatter us today or makes us look older then it would have done the same thing 5 years ago when it was absolutely everywhere. It makes you realise how much we are manipulated and made to feel insecure just to keep us spending money.

I don't want to look dated or dowdy obviously, but I pick my key 'current' pieces carefully and I won't wear any colour or shape or style just because it's 'in' if I don't feel it's doing me any favours.

I've bought some wide legged jeans and I love them with trainers, but having just lost loads of weight and finally feeling that I can look decent in skinnies (and managing to buy some beautiful knee-high leather boots which actually zip up over my previously chunky calves without making my legs look like tree trunks) I am bloody well going to wear them both and enjoy them.

Mylittlebobble · 22/11/2024 09:31

Just to add to my faulty/non existent dated radar... the only thing I do think looks dated is three quarter leggings with lace edging, worn under a fancy top, with chunky heels. From about 15 years ago. That's the only thing I see pictures of which actually sets off the radar. But if I was to see it in real life on someone, I don't think I'd pay it much attention.

Dreamsfallapartattheseams · 22/11/2024 09:34

For anyone who loves these and can't find them at any standard M&S store, I saw these in my local M&S outlet store yesterday.

They look much better in RL and I was very tempted tbh.

Mylittlebobble · 22/11/2024 09:39

Or ebay/vinted.

Fouffycat · 22/11/2024 09:55

I personally find them dated HOWEVER this because I am a millennial and this was the fashion when I was late teens early 20s.

OP if you like them, rock them! Style is a personal thing - who is to tell you they’re uncool or whatever. Fashion is also a lot about what you style with!

I think a chunky silhoutte on top (verus a tiny top we’d wear in the 2010s 😂) will prevent from looking dated.

And I really don't understand why you wasted keystrokes on such an unpleasant comment that isn't constructive at all.

Deathraystare · 22/11/2024 11:17

@supercatlady
Size 20 and 64. Let's hide from the fashion police together! I am very slow though so I will hold you back!

Worldgonecrazy · 22/11/2024 11:23

My rule is ‘if it’s been in fashion more than 4 times in your lifetime it might be a no’

IIRC sparkly skinnies are on their third go round for anyone over 55 so absolutely fine to wear

HeadNorth · 22/11/2024 11:24

TwigletsAndRadishes · 22/11/2024 07:59

The River Island ones are more straight leg & so more current. What makes the M&S ones so dated is that they are tight enough to be jeggings. Whether you care about that is personal choice.
