What do you wear with leggings?

I need some ideas for what to wear with leggings that aren’t really frumpy and unfashionable.
I’m fine jumper wise - have two roll neck jumper dresses that look great, one black, one grey. I have lots of nice cardigans from Sezane, & Other Stories, but it’s the base layer I struggle with.

I want it to be longline so it isn’t pornographic (leggings are thick but I prefer not to have my vag out even in outline form) but other than that I have no clue really.

What do you wear with leggings?

I suppose it depends upon your age, but I look for tops/T-shirts that are tunic length so cover my bum

CharlotteSometimes1 · 17/11/2024 08:34

the only leggings I wear are my gym pairs, I don’t think they have a role in a daytime wardrobe. They do look frumpy and unfashionable, I’d go for a wide leg pair of pants for mooching about a home, but not leggings.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 17/11/2024 08:37

Shirt with t-shirt(s) underneath and jumper/cardigan on top.

Mill3nnial · 17/11/2024 08:56

I think unless you're going for a run or a workout or in your own home then leggings do look a bit frumpy

I often wear leggings around the house and then will put jeans on if I need to pop to the shop or do school drop off or pick up. If I ever keep my leggings on for drop off and pick up then I just put on high boots and put a big coat on top so you can't really see them but usually try to avoid wearing them out.

I know most people wear leggings but I've never got into them. To me they're not proper clothes. They're like thick tights and I feel a bit naked in them. I only ever wore them to the gym.

ExpertlyDecorated · 17/11/2024 09:00

A short black stretchy skirt (I only wear black leggings) then teeshirts or slouchy jumpers or vests and layers depending on the weather. Chelsea boots or similar. So I wear them as tights really.

dudsville · 17/11/2024 09:39

I wear them under midi dresses for warmth, but mine are capri length tights. Would aiming more for dresses be your solution?

YoucancallmeBettyDraper · 17/11/2024 09:50

Was not soliciting opinions on whether leggings are “acceptable” daywear or not but thanks!

Unless being worn for exercise / sport, the leggings will make anything look not so much frumpy and old fashioned but as if you don’t care about getting properly dressed. Obviously if one is ill at home or bed bound it’s a different matter - but for anyone with a free choice it’s a … disappointing way to dress.

(I do occasionally see women looking very svelte in leggings - but they’re always conspicuously expensively dressed and super well groomed. For most people that isn’t achievable every day.)

I guess if a person has to wear leggings the best thing is to buy the thickest you can afford and simply wear them as you would wear a pair of jeans?

henlake7 · 17/11/2024 09:53

I wear mine with a big hoodie for walking the dogs in the morning, for running and then under dresses when it gets colder (or if I have a very short dress or skirt and Im not that confident about it!).
I dont really like them for everyday wear, they are a practical layering piece for me.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 17/11/2024 09:54

Dresses or long tops. Otherwise I mainly wear them to work out.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/11/2024 09:56

another one saying the only way to style leggings to avoid looking “frumpy” is full gym kit mode. Trainers, running top, hoodie over the top, look like you are just picking up some bits int he supermarket on your way back from Pilates.

or only other option is to treat them as thick tights with jumper dresses, but then add longer boots so you can’t see the ankle.

there’s lots of ways to wear them that look “ok but a bit frumpy”, just tough if you want to avoid frump.

also if you are self conscious about your vag being seen, don’t wear leggings as trousers, wear other thicker trousers.

owlexpress · 17/11/2024 09:59

If I'm wearing leggings it tends to be a very casual outfit, so I'll just wear a normal length t-shirt with a baggy longline sweatshirt over. On the rare occasion I'm too hot, I just deal with my bum being on show. Worn in this way I don't think leggings are frumpy, but I think you do need to wear them with trainers and crew socks (over the leggings) to look current.

I'd personally wear tights under a jumper dress. If you're wearing leggings for warmth/comfort, what about a t-shirt dress underneath? Similar or shorter length than the jumper dress. This may also work with the cardigans and jumpers, although again I'd prefer to wear tights from a style POV.

Wigtopia · 17/11/2024 10:00

I treat them like tights and wear skirts and dresses over them

BlanklyMyDear · 17/11/2024 10:09

also if you are self conscious about your vag being seen, don’t wear leggings as trousers, wear other thicker trousers.

How, exactly, would people be able to see the leggings wearer’s vagina through her leggings - unless they have an opening in the gusset, she is wearing no underwear, and lying on the floor making observation possible?

FFS … Hmm

owlexpress · 17/11/2024 10:19

@BlanklyMyDear weird, unnecessary post. PP was responding to the terminology used by OP, which was clearly tongue in cheek. I'm sure we're all aware of the anatomy... FFS.

Mrs Bucket, is that you?

Thanks to the person who suggested a T-shirt dress and the other person who suggested shirts!

For anyone doubting leggings can be stylish, I’ll defer to Vogue on that: www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/gallery/how-to-wear-leggings-trend

I tend to wear Lululemon or Sweaty Betty leggings as Ath Leisure wear. Worn with an oversize sweatshirt and New Balance trainers. Minimal effort for taking the kids to soft play for example.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/11/2024 10:42

A nice tunic top or short dress, even at 62 that looks nice. Also good quality leggings.

CeeJay81 · 17/11/2024 10:44

I wear leggings a lot cause there aren't many trousers that fit properly with a bubble butt! I wear long tops or dresses over them. If wearing a long cardigan I could get away with a normal length tshirt or top but never have the issue of seeing my vag lol.

Exactly what I am wearing today inc the slouchy jumper. Plenty of room for brunch. Wink

CrepuscularCritter · 17/11/2024 10:53

I don't know how the gin got there...there is only Americano in my brunch...

mitogoshigg · 17/11/2024 10:56

Tunic length blouses I bought 2 in India recently, but can be found widely in the U.K. just not necessarily in high st stores in winter. Otherwise like you jumper dresses or short dresses more generally, or short skirts plus top
