What do you wear with leggings?

I need some ideas for what to wear with leggings that aren’t really frumpy and unfashionable.
I’m fine jumper wise - have two roll neck jumper dresses that look great, one black, one grey. I have lots of nice cardigans from Sezane, & Other Stories, but it’s the base layer I struggle with.

I want it to be longline so it isn’t pornographic (leggings are thick but I prefer not to have my vag out even in outline form) but other than that I have no clue really.

What do you wear with leggings?

I have noticed that legging wearing has increased with the demise of skinny jeans where I live (London). I think a lot of women do find the tight support comfortable. My last workplace was casual dress and lots of the younger women wore leggings to work.

WFH has probably also contributed. I know I find that wearing leggings increases the chance I'll fit in an online workout at some point across the day. And there are several local places with quick classes that fit in a lunch hour. But anyone seeing me on the school run won't actually know whether I've done a workout or not!

The women I see are wearing good quality leggings but not necessarily as part of an all-over sportswear look. I don't think fashion is being completely ignored - pulled up sports socks and ubiquitous New Balance galore - but I do think there's an element of practicality and not giving a fuck. After all, you may well be doing something different in the evening and can dress like a grown up then.

I never realised people could get so opinionated about wearing leggings!
I practically live in them, good quality thick ones, mostly sweaty Betty but M&S good move are just as good. Jeans just aren't comfortable for sitting at a desk to WFH, or for a lunchtime run or walk squeezed in. Jeans also terrible in the rain. I will wear them for a supermarket trip, but not town centre type shopping, to the pub or the office.
I'm early 50s and do not think tunics look "stylish" with leggings. I favour the sporty look, generally boxy sweatshirt at hip length and chunky trainers (with the crew socks, lol). Yes, shock, I have my bum and bits outline on show. I don't give a stuff if someone else is bothered by that, that's on them.
Personally I steer away from black as think it's easier for these to look cheap/ubiquitous but navy, dark green, burgundy or neutral colour leggings all look fab to me. Just don't try to dress them up as something they're not.

I'm a bit apple-ly but I have good legs. I wear good quality thick leggings (this year I've bought some in "ponte" fabric) with knee high boots and tunic length tops like in the picture (but never with shoes, it's boots only for me so they never see the light of day in sum__mer).

It's a look that suits me and I think looks good and yes I wear it to the office.

Good Lord, I’m not suggesting I wear them for a day out for afternoon tea at the Ritz followed by the Royal Opera House. Thanks to everyone who has stood up for me on this thread. It’s been a bit nippy so the other day I proudly sported my good quality thick black leggings with a longline black poloneck, an oversize mohair jumper over the top, and black ankle boots. A very fashionable woman once told me, “when in doubt, wear black.” I did put a leopard fur coat over the top though 💅

I wear leggings quite a lot but I'm probably considered frumpy and old fashioned. I wear with a long slouchy sweater, a long shirt or an oversized v neck top. All my tops most definitely cover my bum and I also wear skinny jeans in the same way.

I also have some much thicker winter exercise/walking leggings which are more like very slim joggers and I'll wear those with trainers and a hoody/fleece for dog walking and sitting around at home.

Ya good on you!

I just don't think people have any imagination 🤣

That picture isn't leggings . The cuff shows volume which indicates skinny jeans

Unfortunately so many people look god awful in them it's blurred everyone's view of them

It literally says underneath 'Elevate your patterned leggings'

People just have a very narrow, old fashioned idea of what leggings are & how they can be worn!

Things have moved on!

A short black stretchy skirt (I only wear black leggings) then teeshirts or slouchy jumpers or vests and layers depending on the weather. Chelsea boots or similar. So I wear them as tights really.

Same here. Leggings are better than tights in that they don't creep downwards IYSWIM. I wear tops/knitwear that covers my bottom.

kaos2 · 24/11/2024 19:06

@rockstarshoes I can see that ., I can also see the material around the cuff which looks thick and therefore not leggings in the normal sense .

A cuff like this makes it more flattering on the leg

rockstarshoes · 24/11/2024 20:02

I know what you mean! They aren't skin tight round the ankles either.

I went back to see if it said where they were from but it doesn't say!

I really like them.

EatTrout · 24/11/2024 20:22

I wear leggings a lot on the weekend. I walk the dog in them and tend to keep them on unless I'm doing anything else. Today I've got black thermal leggings on, a maroon roll neck and a black half zip baggy fleece.

happytobemrsg · 24/11/2024 21:21

I only wear my gym ones. I’ll wear them with a unisex hoodie from Abercrombie & trainers

kaos2 · 25/11/2024 07:49

@rockstarshoes I think that's Bella Hadid so no doubt very expensive

ivfjourneyandme · 02/01/2025 20:23

Reading these messages have had me in stitches. Who knew leggings were so controversial?! I LOVE leggings and live in them. I wouldn’t consider my self a frumpy dresser but equally do not give a flying f* what anyone else thinks. As long as I’m happy and comfortable, so be it!

Enough4me · 02/01/2025 23:41

I'm on team love it. I love leggings in the gym, under tunics, in place of tights & have worn leggings and jeggings forever, whether in or out of fashion. Leggings forever!

BitOutOfPractice · 03/01/2025 13:17

There’s nothing more MN than someone doing a pass ag pointing out that someone means vulva when they’ve said vagina. Honestly, it’s so 2013. You know exactly what they meant!

nope. I’m still not wearing leggings outside the gym. There’s so many nice - and very comfortable - alternative trousers now.

kaela100 · 25/02/2025 11:31

Leggings ARE frumpy. Even really fit, sporty women look dowdy wearing them with gymgear and I think they look worse when you try to the dress them up.

I would just try trousers / jeans. I feel much more put together when I wear my straight leg jeans and a nice blouse.

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 25/02/2025 11:52

Depends where you live and what your lifestyle is like though, doesn't it. You'd look extremely odd hiking about the mud and hills to do the school run where I live in a "nice blouse."

Whereas I'd probably look similarly odd in my outdoorsy kit if I lived in suburbia.

NormasArse · 25/02/2025 11:56

I wear walking type leggings most days because I work outdoors, or I’m walking the dogs.

i wear big hoodies or oversized sweatshirts in this weather, or t-shirts in summer (but I’ve usually swapped to shorts by then.

I couldn’t give a fig whether other women deem them unacceptable- I dress for my own life!

If you are buying frumpy looking leggings, you’re buying the wrong type.

All depends on your lifestyle - I can’t remember the last time I wore a blouse - probably as a little girl.
