What do you wear with leggings?

I need some ideas for what to wear with leggings that aren’t really frumpy and unfashionable.
I’m fine jumper wise - have two roll neck jumper dresses that look great, one black, one grey. I have lots of nice cardigans from Sezane, & Other Stories, but it’s the base layer I struggle with.

I want it to be longline so it isn’t pornographic (leggings are thick but I prefer not to have my vag out even in outline form) but other than that I have no clue really.

Being very u fashionable and 62 I admit to wearing them every day almost apart from summer as I just find more comfortable than jeans etc - I wear a lot of wrap over jersey fabric knee length dresses , plain and patterned or thigh skimming v neck tops

Crikeyalmighty · 20/11/2024 11:03

@GrouchyKiwi yes forgot to say on my post - skater dresses- I have loads

PrincessofWells · 20/11/2024 11:06

Just don't. Unless you are svelte, and exceptionally well groomed they will always look frumpy.

Doggymummar · 20/11/2024 11:09

I'm seeing people online wearing them with the fake shirt bottom from Amazon, you wear it like a skirt but it looks like you have a long shirt sticking out the bottom of your top.

Cavello · 20/11/2024 11:10

Another that wears leggings with skirts, long tunic tops and jumper dresses. I wear them like thick tights.

Actually planning to wear them tomorrow for lunch with my new team. Black knee length boots, purple jumper dress and jacket.

rockstarshoes · 20/11/2024 20:22

Here you go Op!

Just normal every day just going about your business outfits!

Nothing frumpy about any of them even the over 50 ones!

You're in denial. You can clearly see them in some leggings. Just bleurgh

I think the point is that your vagina is the opening leading up to your womb, so anatomically pretty impossible to see through clothing.

AuroraBunsenBurner · 21/11/2024 11:36

Bear in mind, OP, that a lot of people on MN S&B are very concerned with trends, even though they insist they're not!

leggings cannot be frumpy or off trend, they're a multifunctional garment - perhaps those who wish to use expressive language about them feel that they don't suit them? And that's fair enough.

I don't live in a trendy city or repressed suburb of side-eyeing mums, lol, so wear leggings with abandon for hiking, long walks and other activities such as collecting moss, volunteering outdoors and mooching for stuff for sculptures.
I wear mine with a Patagonia insulated hoodie and big boots. Often with a rain coat over that. Not quite fashion week but very much current and appropriate for my lifestyle.

At home I may often wear soft leggings with a long chunky jumper on lazy days. I would not go to work or to a special event, dinner or city break wearing them.

Many of the current trouser/jeans styles are bordering on 'laugh out loud' to my mind; ludicrous stiff shapes with giant nappy-style rises to keep that tummy in....and the block shaped wide legs are hideous. Flapping about in winter in the rain, with a similarly blockish jacket isn't what I feel a 'good look'.
I am not a fan of jeans in general, but would rather wear a skirt if I had to (which I don't!), but then they're all ridiculously shaped too.

Fashion will convince ANYONE to buy ugly shit. You will notice how almost everyone on here suddenly (oh so naturally, lol) decided that the new blockish trew shapes suited them more, as soon as the trend shifted and other MNers gave them the nod of approval.

And to add, most people wear what is appropriate for what they're doing, which includes young people wearing leggings, etc, so they're not going anywhere no matter how many MNers can't get them up past their thighs.
People often associate cheap arse ruched legging with the, er, ahem 'lower class', which is certainly a thing, but out and about in the lands of milk and honey the more expensive ones are still going strong.

MidnightMeltdown · 21/11/2024 11:45

Leggings for me are a wfh/popping to the corner shop type garment. I just wear with a longish jumper as I only really wear them in cold weather.

I think the key is to wear them with something that covers your bum to avoid looking cheap and tacky.

This is so true - there are an awful lot of sheep on here. I tend to dress for my lifestyle, which does mean leggings a lot of the time. If I look like I'm about to run up a hill, that's because I probably am. I might be getting side-eye from other mums at the school gates but if I am, I haven't noticed and don't care.

Or, if I'm not getting side-eye for wearing leggings, it's probably because I'm quite thin and it's therefore "acceptable" to wear gym wear. The barely-hidden fat discrimination you often see on here doesn't sit well with me.

BlanklyMyDear · 17/11/2024 10:09

also if you are self conscious about your vag being seen, don’t wear leggings as trousers, wear other thicker trousers.

How, exactly, would people be able to see the leggings wearer’s vagina through her leggings - unless they have an opening in the gusset, she is wearing no underwear, and lying on the floor making observation possible?

FFS … Hmm

It sounds like you didn't read the OP's comment about not wanting her vag being on display, but you're just being pedantic. You know she meant the outline of her vulva.

it's unnecessary.

kaela100 · 21/11/2024 12:34

In my opinion leggings / skinny jeans / cigarette trousers always look frumpy if you don't have thin, shapely legs. Maybe try a pair of straight leg trousers or jeans.

rockstarshoes · 21/11/2024 21:40

This thread is actually starting to make me quite cross! 🤣

I don't know how I've become so invested!

2 outfits both with leggings one is 'frumpy' and I actually hate that word so I will change it to ' not on trend' and one on trend!

Why are people so opinionated about 1 item of clothing that can be worn so many ways!

I think that anyone who thinks leggings are frumpy, full stop, is probably just not very good at the art of putting an outfit together.
They're simply a base layer, and the sky's the limit to what you layer up over them to express your own style.
They're comfortable and practical too which can only be a plus.
At this time of year its midi dresses/ jumper dresses and boots over leggings as a staple.

sansou · 21/11/2024 23:30

I have this and wear it with my GAP charcoal grey rib knit wool leggings (bought a long time ago).

Enough4me · 21/11/2024 23:45

Great with tunics as on me (short) they look like short dresses. Leggings are generally thicker than tights and I think look good with DocMartin/Fly London style boots.

benefitstaxcredithelp · 22/11/2024 08:13

To me leggings are a ‘not fully dressed’ look but each to their own. Also ‘figure hugging’ kind of saddens me as only women and girls wear figure hugging clothes (in general) and I hate that we feel the need to do that.

I appreciate people wear them for comfort but there are other much more comfortable things out there like harem pants, jumpsuits, loose fit denim, dresses to name but a few.

Did you miss the 10+ year fashion for men to wear spray-on skinny jeans..? I also suspect there's an element of anatomy in this. Men are unlikely to find tight fitting clothes comfortable because they have a different anatomy. It's not the same for women. Plus having boobs, better support is more comfortable.

That might be in your opinion/experience, but I don't find the options you list more comfortable. I find leggings more comfortable than any of them. Would you really wear a jumpsuit or loose fit denim on a long haul flight? Leggings are my go-to for things like that.

kaos2 · 22/11/2024 18:12

That picture isn't leggings . The cuff shows volume which indicates skinny jeans

Unfortunately so many people look god awful in them it's blurred everyone's view of them

another79 · 23/11/2024 08:53

If I'm wearing everyday leggings that are not fitness ones I just wear anything longline over them.

Westfacing · 23/11/2024 09:12

With due deference to Vogue - that article doesn't actually show anyone wearing the suggestions!

And if you click on the photo you can see the wearer is young, tall, slim and likely rich so of course she looks good - the adjacent photo shows how the average person looks in leggings and tunic!

kaos2 · 23/11/2024 09:20

@Westfacing also. True as I said in an earlier post ..

Anything looks great on vogue models

I actually think the picture on the left isn't a great example of how someone can look good in leggings (which you can), and the second picture is actually pyjamas.
