What do you wear with leggings?

I need some ideas for what to wear with leggings that aren’t really frumpy and unfashionable.
I’m fine jumper wise - have two roll neck jumper dresses that look great, one black, one grey. I have lots of nice cardigans from Sezane, & Other Stories, but it’s the base layer I struggle with.

I want it to be longline so it isn’t pornographic (leggings are thick but I prefer not to have my vag out even in outline form) but other than that I have no clue really.

What do you wear with leggings?

Short shirt dresses with belts and boots look really good.

Same with slim fitting longer jumpers.

I live in leggings as they can be dressed up easily exactly as thick tights can.

Sorry - leggings are for exercise only unless you are 12 or under. Or lounging around the house if you must.

I don’t think so. OP made it clear she wants to look stylish/ fashionable. She implied she wants to pair said leggings with a Sezane cardigan. That is not a stylish choice no matter how stunning your figure.

DouglasBader · 17/11/2024 17:54

Lots of stuffing.

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 17/11/2024 18:15

I live in leggings.
Sweaty Betty ones. When it's cold; with trainers, a hoody or "after class" SB longline top, and a vest or T shirt underneath.

In summer, with a loose-fitting boxy short T shirt and trainers.

I spend most of my non-work life hiking, running, climbing, at yoga or going to the gym, so leggings are a staple.

I would never wear them with a dress or skirt, in lieu of tights. Really not my style and I personally think it looks really dated, but what others wear is entirely up to them.

Was not soliciting opinions on whether leggings are “acceptable” daywear or not but thanks!

You did ask for advice on what to wear with leggings so that they aren't 'frumpy' or 'unfashionable' though...
I think what some people are trying to tell you is that leggings just are frumpy and unfashionable, no matter what you put them with

kaos2 · 17/11/2024 18:45

That vogue link is laughable , obviously vogue models look amazing in everything .. if you look like that then crack on and wear them as replacement for trousers but agree with others the look is unbalanced which is why no one really wears them as trousers

I knew someone who wore the shiny gym leggings in replacement for jeans and I always found it a really odd look .. each to their own though 🤷‍♀️

I’d genuinely love to know the image they all have of me in their heads, because it clearly isn’t good!

Leggings are frumpy.

my colleague wears them and they are cheap and thin. She wears a size too small and carries a lot of weight. She bends down and her knickers can be seen🙄

please, don’t wear them

Parker231 · 17/11/2024 20:17

I live in leggings- Lululemon or Sweaty Betty - they look good any time of the day, at the gym, going shopping or out for lunch. Wear them with white trainers or black boots

Sounds like your colleague is wearing the wrong size and quality of leggings. There is nothing wrong with leggings that fit and are a good quality.

Why - adults can look good in leggings for day wear.

KitsyWitsy · 17/11/2024 22:53

I don’t think it’s possible to look smart in leggings. They are way too casual. On the same level as pyjamas for me. For the house only. I don’t have any myself but I have in the past and couldn’t have worn them outside.

saveforthat · 17/11/2024 23:02

A colleague gave me this tip. She buys long length vest tops that are long enough to cover your bum, you can then wear jumpers that are shorter without revealing any outlines. It gives you a layered look that looks pretty good.

dayslikethese1 · 19/11/2024 09:21

I wear plain black leggings with short dresses or short pleated skirts and biker boots. Someone upthread said this is dated though 🤔 It likely is but I've always liked that look and it's comfortable. I have one pair that are more like trousers that I wear hiking with a long shirt or t-shirt and hiking boots/thick socks but that is practicality not fashion😁

Beetlebumz · 19/11/2024 21:00

BlanklyMyDear · 17/11/2024 10:09

also if you are self conscious about your vag being seen, don’t wear leggings as trousers, wear other thicker trousers.

How, exactly, would people be able to see the leggings wearer’s vagina through her leggings - unless they have an opening in the gusset, she is wearing no underwear, and lying on the floor making observation possible?

FFS … Hmm

You're in denial. You can clearly see them in some leggings. Just bleurgh

JumpstartMondays · 19/11/2024 21:02

I wear leggings under my trousers when it gets really cold 😆

That is all.

OMGitsnotgood · 19/11/2024 22:11

I live in leggings and am pretty sure I don't look frumpy. I think it depends what you wear them with.

Try googling 'tunic top' OP and you'll get lots of hits on vag-covering length tops. Or Google tunic tops on the websites of your favourite brands.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/11/2024 22:13

I don’t wear leggings any more except for the gym, so I can’t tell you what I wear with them for anywhere else 🤷‍♀️

I have no idea whether this look is dated or not, but I agree that I think it looks really nice. Something doesn't just stop looking good simply because it is currently not high fashion. With the look you describe, the leggings are doubling up as thick tights, and it works really well.

LeopardsANeutral · 20/11/2024 10:12

I just wear mine for the school run or running about with the kids, usually with an oversized sweatshirt or hoodie and uggs. I like the look of slouchy socks over the leggings, it makes it cosy in this weather too.

SharpOpalNewt · 20/11/2024 10:14

I just wear them in the gym with a t-shirt or vest.

They are too cold for this time of year and I much prefer cords or jeans.

GrouchyKiwi · 20/11/2024 10:25

I wear leggings a lot as the compression ones support my joints.

I get short dresses, preferably skater style, or jumper dresses like you've mentioned.

Joe Brown's occasionally has a tunic that isn't over-designed.

Im serioously considering layering my fleece lined tights with my fur lined leggings so I can continue wearing dresses....Im pretty sure that would be nice and toasty!😃
