What do you wear with leggings?

I need some ideas for what to wear with leggings that aren’t really frumpy and unfashionable.
I’m fine jumper wise - have two roll neck jumper dresses that look great, one black, one grey. I have lots of nice cardigans from Sezane, & Other Stories, but it’s the base layer I struggle with.

I want it to be longline so it isn’t pornographic (leggings are thick but I prefer not to have my vag out even in outline form) but other than that I have no clue really.

What do you wear with leggings?

@ExpertlyDecorated

Exactly, thick tights basically with knee high boots usually. Tights don't usually fit well

Ah, well there you go, Google and Vogue have solved your problem.

Personally, and I know many will disagree, unless you are very young and very stylish leggings will always look a bit sloppy if worn as trousers. Perhaps it’s the unbalance of very slim leg with bulkier top, and then the question of shoes and the even tricker question of socks pulled over the top (modern but hideous) or not (hugely dated and still a bit hideous).

Even when young and stylish, I just think there are better options. They only seem to look decent on Instagram, very rarely in real life.

But to answer your question, should vogue not be enough of an authority, perhaps: with big boots, or an oversized shirt with a tank underneath or knitted tank on top, or with a blazer and slouchy knit, or with an oversized roll neck, or worn as tights again with stompy boots.

I wear leggings alot but i wear oversized jumpers with them.

Bakedpumpkin · 17/11/2024 11:05

I think you have to wear a big long jumper or full gym wear. A long t shirt with an open cardy is not a good look. Also with jumper dress best to wear tights and boots!

I love my leggings and wear a pair a few times per week. They can look good.

I tend to wear layers with mine in the winter. I don't mind my butt or vag outline as you've put it on show. (Looking now and can't see the outline?)

The trick is to wear thick, well made and leggings appropriate to your size. If in doubt size up. Mine look smooth from the front and butt is outlined but not indecent.

Today, I'm wearing a vest top, an off the shoulder slouchy knitted jumper that skims my waist - some bum on show not much though, Leggings of course. When I go out to the shops this afternoon, I'll wear some chunky Chelsea boots and a big scarf.

I like vest tops or body suits with long line cardigans, jumpers, over sized boxy hoodies or jumper dresses.

The key to looking and feeling good in whatever you wear is to wear clothes that fit, are clean and wear them with confidence. No one is really paying attention to you.

The Vogue article rather makes my point for me - the least attractive outfit is noticeably cheaper than the others. And in the linked article on choosing leggings, only the maternity pair are cheap. They’re definitely not saying you can achieve the same glamour from Primark …

I’m not planning on buying anything from Primark.

I’m actually struggling to see the point of the thread - when you have an article that answers your question! Grin

Well, I was interested in what people had to say, but most seemed to just want to come here to tell me how awful they think leggings would look, so I then resorted to Google. Also the Vogue article had only three suggestions. Some people have had some useful advice so that’s been helpful.

I think leggings are a legitimate piece of clothing in their own right! Flare leggings and a sweatshirt/check shirt and slight crop t shirt. Love it.

FranticFrankie · 17/11/2024 11:23

A thick oversized shirt (like a shacket, but not quite as thick)
A long vest top with jumper over it
Long t shirt with cardigan over
Ling shirt with tank top
Doc Martens or trainers
☺️

FranticFrankie · 17/11/2024 11:24

Oops *long shirt

Soccermumamir · 17/11/2024 11:38

I tend to wear long checked shirts with mine, with my DMs.

holjam · 17/11/2024 12:15

I often wear wet look or thicker leggings in the winter with longline shirts, sweaters, chunky jumpers, tea length dresses, longline t shirts and denim shirt layered over, etc etc etc. Chunky boots or trainers, long coat and it can be a very smart and comfy outfit!

kaos2 · 17/11/2024 12:28

I wear them with black top in a tucked into socks and trainers type way .

We have a saying in our house that leggings aren't trousers and I think that stands good stead .

they just look odd with normal clothes . 🤷‍♀️

Isitfridayyetsophie · 17/11/2024 12:43

Lulu lemon/sweaty Betty plain leggings, if I’m not working out, would be worn very casually with a long T-shirt or hoody, like the Anine Bing oversized hoodies.

I have leather look Spanx leggings and a pair of their plain black ones that aren’t really sports style, those I would wear with oversized jumpers, I have an oversized half zip jumper, or polo necks that are long but not dresses. Basically whenever I wear leggings it’s with something covering my bum. Wouldn’t really wear either of these styles when it’s warm.

Shoes would be trainers, mini Uggs or slippers styles, knee high boots or walking boots, depending what I’m doing.

StressedQueen · 17/11/2024 12:46

I do not really wear leggings daily but if I do, it's paired with a jumper or a hoodie. If it's hot or I'm working out then a cropped top.

Borris · 17/11/2024 12:48

I wear leggings with a denim mini skirt ...but I'm definitely not stylish

Steppingintome · 17/11/2024 12:55

I saw a lady in the coop the other day who looked very nice. She had some very thick chocolate brown leggings on. She’d paired them with a cream oversized shirt which came just below her ‘bits’ a v-neck camel coloured, sleeveless jumper and a scarf. She wore boots with chunky sports socks. Gold jewellery.

she looked casual but put together and warm. She had a (what looked like) wool coat over her arm and a large brown leather bag.

I think leggings can be stylish but need to be thick and paired with neutral classics. Frumpy leggings to me create an image of see through black leggings and a floral tunic or a too tight vest top. Not the look I’d go for lol

I think thats alot of the problem with leggings TBH. Maybe you are wearing very expensive Lululemon leggings with a matching hoodie but to the casual observer you still look like the harried mum in Primark leggings and hoodie at the schoolgate!😂

BakewellGin1 · 17/11/2024 13:05

I only wear leggings with hoodie, tshirt etc or comfy jumper as longewear.
I refuse to wear them as actual day wear as I do think they look frumpy with most things

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 17/11/2024 13:11

I have a couple of pairs of Swetty Betty All Day ones which have a print on in the same colour. I wear these with an oversized sweater and smarter trainers so I guess it's almost the gym look which has been alluded to here. Then my long check coat if I'm going out.

I think it's a nice neat every day look and also practical and perfectly acceptable if it's a few times a week

Iwantmyoldnameback · 17/11/2024 15:34

Nothing wrong with Primark fleece lined leggings. Comfortable, not see through and no "bits" on show.

Weelegs29 · 17/11/2024 16:04

I wear leggings a good part of the week, I hate anything restrictive around my waist and prefer to be comfy. I mainly wear a longline sweatshirt/knitted jumper or a longsleeve tshirt top and a shacket. Any and all of those options keep my vag and bumhole well out of sight!
