Let’s talk about White stuff

Was passing today and I saw this lovely pair of glittery socks in the window suitable for a Christmas present.
Went in there to buy them and remembered what a pile of old shit it is.
Back in the early 2000s it was the place to go for young mums- , who remembers the velvet coats, the a line printed skirts, endless layering , the knitted tights that was quite the look then?

However, it does not seem to have moved on at all. Whilst there is the odd nice thing in there, glittery socks and a lovely gold bag I saw (can’t afford mustn’t buy) It’s just a riot of print with no kind of theme and really poor display.

Do you go to White stuff? What do you rate in there, do you think it’s lost its way?

Used to love it. But not impressed with the last couple of years stuff.

this would be useful if you’re working at the local Londis

Is it an actual tabard?! 😆

Pancakeflipper · 12/11/2024 22:48

They tend to have about 2 things I like per season and they tend to be trousers.
I want to like them but they keep throwing frumpy printed things onto their coat hangers. Same with FatFace but usually get some knitwear instead of trousers.

Cant even handle going into SeaSalt or Joules.

MaidOfAle · 12/11/2024 22:48

I've still got some of their non-viscose skirts that I bought over a decade ago. The viscose reversible a-line skirts shrank and went bobbly, put me right off going there again.

Perfectlystill · 12/11/2024 22:52

Hasn't it recently been sold to a big retail chain? That might explain it.

I have a large, frumpy stepsister who is a Geography teacher and she always wears White Stuff. Camouflage clothes for people who don't want to be looked at.

Is Wendy a lesbian. She's certainly giving that vibe

Hoping you’re not being serious.

Shakespeareandi · 12/11/2024 22:59

I bought a pair of dungarees there 4 years ago. Still love them and would buy again if they had them. Used to buy cosy plain coloured jumpers and loved their ditsy print knickers. Not been in, in at least 3 years. I am sure I could find a couple of items I liked in there, but so overpriced now for something not amazing. I'm very much over the type of prints they do as well. Wouldn't go in to seasalt either. Just too many prints. The colours are quite weird too. I do hope they survive though. The prints will come back into fashion at some point.

I don't know what Wendy is but more worried about the owl... must be a furry?

I like them and then get incredibly disappointed by them. White stuff keep using dull tones. Never a deep navy blue or a rich wine red, but a dull duck's egg blue/ grey and a mild terracotta orange. The tones do not suit my skin tone. That model in one of your pictures @OP has been very good at modelling their clothes for ages, bless her, white stuff colour scheme works for her, but it really doesn't work for many skin tones, until we have a significant amount of grey hair.

Yes, I have the odd piece, but can I go in and buy something just because? No, the colour will likely be off. Fat Face seems to have understood the wider colour palette.

That's my issue with them. Often I see a style I like, but in horrible patterns in sludgy colours.
Their muted colours just don't suit me.

I’ve just got this jumper and I really like it , please don’t say it’s frumpy

I wonder who thought of putting a pocket on the front of that jumper.

KirstenBlest · 12/11/2024 23:14

Owls don't have any fur.

Foxybyname · 12/11/2024 23:31

Frumpy. Shame as I lived in it when my kids were small - probably about 2006-2010.

Not the point of the thread but it annoys me beyond measure that Nikki Garnett (Midlife Chic blogger) advertises for them. She looks so uncomfortable in all the outfits, just not authentic at all. So far removed from the Me&Em that she wears when it's her own money and choices. Every time she sells off her excess clothing there's always all the White Stuff pieces she's been given advertised as BNWT. Says it all. Surely the WS team can see that she is just not their target market and she's just taking the money?? Makes me mad. Lazy from them, greedy from her.

As you were.

Wincarnis · 12/11/2024 23:44

Sometimes they have nice knitwear in WS (but it’s always too short on me) I have bought handbags in the sales, but in general I find WS overpriced and am not keen on all the floral stuff. Seasalt is nice quality but far too expensive, and like WS they ruin a nice design by making it in a weird floral print.

TheOGCCL · 13/11/2024 00:07

I find White Stuff quite dull and twee, sensible but often slightly wacky too. It’s not my style. PP had it spot on that with their colours they seem to be designing almost exclusively for women with white or grey hair.

There is only one White Stuff store in London (except concessions). I have a look if I’m out of town but only for curiosity really. My mother gets some bits there and I think the (unpatterned) coats are their best offering.

I’d prefer them and Seasalt to focus on plain garments. Much more versatile.

BusyFinch · 13/11/2024 00:46

A friend got me a pair of glittery socks for Christmas once - one of the worst presents I’d ever received. They were sort of Lycra material and the glitter thread was scratchy and they weren’t very stretchy so were tight and unyielding.

Negroany · 13/11/2024 00:51

I like their jeans, fit me well and have proper pockets and the right number of belt loops!

I've got a few jumpers from there, natural fibres, not gone bobbly. But you do have to be selective on patterns. I had some ankle boots that fell apart in two places very quickly.

Then a plain white long sleeved top, which can be bizarrely hard to find! Not so keen on the dresses, or the patterns - prefer Brakeburn for those.

SnowFrogJelly · 13/11/2024 01:04

Love White Stuff ♥️

noobiedoobie · 13/11/2024 02:10

Fat Face has some good things - I've some white birkenstocks for £32. They do some really good classic navy cotton shorts. If you want some kind of pretty loose white cotton vest it's the place for one of those. And cotton soft PJs.

White Stuff is a bit hit and miss. They do some quite interesting cuts. Jeans and shorts are reasonably flattering. Some nice jewellery. Also the place for a long sleeve white cotton top as PP said.

What they do have going for them is a lot of merino and cotton when a lot of the high street is synthetic which appeals to those wanting more breathable fabric. Not long lasting necessarily.

Does have some resale value on Vinted still.

I find their necklines are too big and unflattering.

Gowlett · 13/11/2024 03:39

I went into a large Seasalt store recently & thought everything there was dreadful. I really wanted to find something nice!

I have dresses from them, a few seasons ago, that are lovely. The current offering is cheaper (still same price) versions of them.

I don’t shop in Joules or Fatface, nothing about either brand appeals to me. White Stuff, not really. I think Boden went the same way?

ForGreyKoala · 13/11/2024 03:47

KnigCnut · 12/11/2024 22:25

I have a lovely purple velvet pea coat from White Stuff. I wear it with wide jeans, Doc Martens and my naturally curly hair. I imagine myself looking 1970s glam rock rather than middle aged mum.
Don't disillusion me! 🤦‍♀️

That sounds gorgeous!

Gowlett · 13/11/2024 03:52

restingintheshade, agree hat everything looks shite now. No matter the price. Good high street stuff is a thing of the past…

I still have great things from Oasis, Warehouse, French Connection, GAP. Even Topshop, H&M. Well cut, nice fabrics.

Frumpy. Great word. I shop in M&S mostly nowadays. Always find something good, but the frump factor is a real thing!
