I've made a HUGE mistake with my hair. I had it cut yesterday and the stylist cut it FAR too short. It used to hang below my shoulders and yesterday I told her she could chop a bit off and give me a long bob, but I stressed that I needed to be able to tie it up as I'm a runner and I can't bear having hair hanging down my neck. She started cutting at the back and I could immediately tell she was cutting too much off, but it was too late.

She gave me what I'd describe as a short bob. It's chin-length. I can tie up the top, but the sides fall down and the back is really short and I absolutely HATE it. My kids said 'Oh wow, you had a lot cut off' and DH said 'You look like a mum'. It's frumpy, it's horrible and I'm so miserable. Hair only grows 1/4 of an inch a month so it's going to take 8 months to grow 2 inches, which I estimate will make it tie-up-able and not quite so hideously frumpy. I cried last night when I realised how bad it looks. I have no idea what to do, other than wear a paper bag over my head for the next 8 months. My hair is fine and flyaway and slightly wavy, which makes it hard to style too. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think at 50 I'm maybe a bit old for bunches 😂

I'm nearly 49 and use low bunches under my mountain biking helmet, and occasionally when running.

You can do a low pony, or a higher one with clips to hold the stragglers up.

Or - radical but - I have an undercut with hair about that length and I can easily put it in a pony tail. You don't get stragglers with the undercut because there are none of those annoying shorter ones.

Has happened to me. Try a head wrap, or buy a wig - I've done both at different times!

Use some product and turn your head upside down and dry your hair like that for volume.

As it doesn't have the weight it used to it'll be really big!

Poor you. The picture of the JA long bob is nothing like the short chin length bob she's given you!
I'd complain. Or at least phone her to tell her you have thought about it and are very unhappy.

Unfortunately, as you said there is very little that can be done now so I can only suggest a change of attitude and acceptance, ok this is a bit of a shame but you're a lovely woman with a slightly shorter than you had planned cut, but it's still very nice and over the next few months it will grow.

there's absolutely nothing that you can do unless you're planning on having some sort of extensions put in! please don't give it any more thought because your haircut is very nice and you look lovely!

That is not Jennifer Aniston. That's Wendolene.
Is this JA's new hairstyle?

How's your hair going now @cheezncrackers? I was just coming to post my tale of woe from the hairdressers yesterday and found your post. I'm the same age, with very similar hair, and now the same cut! Has yours grown out OK? I also feel 'Mumsy' but I understand people's issues with the word. I feel like it's shorthand for 'don't mind me, in fact I am completely invisible unless you need an unheroic small act of service like a sandwich or a lift somewhere'.

cheezncrackers · 04/12/2024 14:32

Hi @crosshatching, I'm sorry you're where I was back in July. It's shit isn't it, but I have good news. Mine is now MUCH better! As promised, I haven't let my stylist near it with a pair of scissors since the horror cut and five months later it's now completely tie-up-able and I look like me again. For about a month it looked awful and we went on holiday in August, so I look like a frump in all our photos. I did go out and buy myself a baseball cap though and that helped a lot - plus it kept the sun out of my eyes.

My only advice is to do whatever you can to get through the first month or so. Perhaps you could wear a Santa hat and tell everyone that you're just in festive spirits? Alternatively, you could just DRINK the festive spirits and try not to worry about your hair. Honestly, I was amazed how many people who I see every week didn't even comment so presumably didn't register that I had a horrible haircut! Being invisible has its compensations 😄

Thanks @cheezncrackers Righty o, spend the next month in a Santa hat and a stupor 😂. Glad to hear you're feeling more like yourself again. I'll be over here humming 'let it grow, let it grow, let it grow' all Christmas!
