I've made a HUGE mistake with my hair. I had it cut yesterday and the stylist cut it FAR too short. It used to hang below my shoulders and yesterday I told her she could chop a bit off and give me a long bob, but I stressed that I needed to be able to tie it up as I'm a runner and I can't bear having hair hanging down my neck. She started cutting at the back and I could immediately tell she was cutting too much off, but it was too late.

She gave me what I'd describe as a short bob. It's chin-length. I can tie up the top, but the sides fall down and the back is really short and I absolutely HATE it. My kids said 'Oh wow, you had a lot cut off' and DH said 'You look like a mum'. It's frumpy, it's horrible and I'm so miserable. Hair only grows 1/4 of an inch a month so it's going to take 8 months to grow 2 inches, which I estimate will make it tie-up-able and not quite so hideously frumpy. I cried last night when I realised how bad it looks. I have no idea what to do, other than wear a paper bag over my head for the next 8 months. My hair is fine and flyaway and slightly wavy, which makes it hard to style too. Does anyone have any ideas?

Oh dear @Salome61 - there's nothing like someone utterly blunt to make you feel utterly rubbish. I'm proud of you for giving her the silent treatment though - usually it's very hard and awkward to do that while someone is cutting your hair.

As for 'looking like a mum' - unfortunately that's also an insult.

To be fair, it looked a lot better yesterday. Since then I've had a bath and got the bottom all wet (because I can't f*ing tie it up!) and then slept on it.

@cheezncrackers

get a shower cap! That will stop it getting wet

@cheezncrackers

It looks fine. And what's wrong with looking like a 'mum?' Confused

My thoughts exactly.

I think it looks lovely OP.

PuppyMonkey · 24/07/2024 21:09

I don’t think it’s half as bad as you think it’s is OP but I also don’t agree with PPs telling you it looks great etc. Sorry! It doesn’t look like a particularly good bob and bob haircuts need styling, you can’t just wash it and leave it - if you can’t at least blow dry it a bit sleeker and shiny, there’s no point having a bob imho.i have a sharp bob with a fringe, get it cut every six weeks otherwise it grows out of shape.its high maintenance.

There are loads of great tutorials on YouTube on how to twist hair up and clip it at the front etc until it gets longer and you can tie it in a pony tail.

Josette77 · 24/07/2024 21:09

I would stop highlighting it. It's looks fragile and broken. Honestly the length is fine and it probably needed a good chop.

I would go for a richer colour that will make it look healthier. No more bleach.

Your hair is very fine and there's not a lot of it, so a quick run through with a straightener will only take you a few minutes and it will also make your hair look healthier.

Unforgettablefire · 24/07/2024 21:21

You look like a mum? You are a mum what does this even mean?

Your hair is lovely it does suit you. Try hairbands and styling products, clips, bobbles etc to keep it in place and off your face when running.
It will soon grow in and you'll get used to it but really it is very nice.

CountessWindyBottom · 24/07/2024 21:28

I feel really sorry for you @cheezncrackers! Is that your natural colour? You have a nice tone to your hair.

I'd be furious to be honest. This is not what you asked for, it is not a long bob. And given your hair type, I don't think it's the cut for you either. The only thing I will say is that it will grow.

Is your hairdresser working by herself or part of a bigger salon? If you're that upset I'd go and ask them to do something to mitigate your distress. What I don't know but something to give it more life and shape!

FartingAgainstThunder · 24/07/2024 21:34

I would perhaps style it into a middle shade and get a curtain fringe cut in (at a different hairdresser)

Have a look at Pascale Banks on Instagram, Her short hair is always lovely.

Namechangencncnc · 24/07/2024 21:35

Don't go side parting, it is ageing. Go centre and spend your £400 on a Dyson air wrap.

Berlinlover · 24/07/2024 21:38

I finished chemo seven weeks ago and am as bald as an egg. You look absolutely fine, I even lost my eyebrows and eyelashes!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/07/2024 21:42

Why would you back to her, there's no way I'd trust her ever again let alone pay for high lights?!

tribalmango · 24/07/2024 21:49

Am also a runner in my 50s and ALWAYS say I have to tie it up. So, long enough and no layering.

Can you make a tiny pony tail? Lots of hair clips?

I think I'd wear a Buff either as a skull cao or wide hair band.

I have been known to have plaits which looks slightly less juvenile than bunches.

Bless you @Berlinlover. I hope your chemo has been successful Flowers

Wow, I feel we may have gone to the same hairdresser! Mine was cut identically including the random too long bits. I also told her I still needed to tie it up.

I was also considering extensions and looked at wigs! I'm 4 weeks on and it's a bit better. I style it so the ends stick outward with plenty of volume up top. I don't usually bother about my greys but it made me look much older so I've dyed it too. Can't wait for it to grow!

cheezncrackers · 24/07/2024 21:56

I've washed it and it actually looks quite a bit better - it has a lot more body now. It was like a limp rag earlier. I can't do fringes (I have a double crown so it parts like curtains at the front), and god forbid I'm not having any more cut off!!!

It will grow. I'll just have to be patient. I've ordered some sea kelp and super-strength biotin supplements and a selection of head bands to keep it off my face for running and I'll just have to make the best of it.

It's shit isn't it @HangingOnJustAbout? There are few things worse than a bad haircut, because you really can't hide it 😒

Divebar2021 · 24/07/2024 21:59

Well I don’t think it’s as bad as you think it is…. There’s a certain amount of shell shock when you have a big chop - even if it’s what you ask for. I think a natural French style bob is pretty on trend at the moment. I keep seeing women online going for that style. Play around with some products and the parting and see what you feel good with ( forget trends re partings just play with it ). I have short short hair now ( which my daughter hated when I had done ) but when I had that length I could put some product in and twist sections and either leave it to dry naturally or dry with a diffuser. I’ve also had super straight bob which was a disaster in the rain but do suit hair types other than mine.

I think at 50 I'm maybe a bit old for bunches 😂

You're 50 and you're upset about someone saying you look like a mum! Jesus my mum was a granny at that age haha. Honestly I think it's really nice, it's maybe just because it's not what you visioned, it might grow on you.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 24/07/2024 22:02

A bob is one of those haircuts that mainly needs to be styled to look great, most people can't pull it off without some form of styling. That's the problem. It's not hideous though, and it will soon grow back.

MadisonAvenue · 24/07/2024 22:12

I can relate OP. My hairdresser has been cutting my hair for nearly 10 years and knows it and knows what I like so I have no idea what went through her mind when she cut it three weeks ago.
The light layers I always have and instructed her to do turned into heavy layering all around the bottom and no amount of styling, straightening and various types of product will stop it flicking up at the ends and I feel so frumpy.

I think a 'bob' suits about 3% of women. Most cannot carry it off. And the inverted bob is the worst hairstyle ever created! Shock

Yeah I mentioned this too earlier. WTF is wrong with looking like a mum? WTAF is 'mumsy?' What a horrible misogynist description! Hmm Making out looking like a 'mum' is a bad thing. No-one ever berates men for looking like a dad! What utter rot I am reading on this thread!

Tel12 · 24/07/2024 22:25

It's actually quite a good look. You just need to get used to it. TBH your DH remark was really unnecessary.

Here to also comment on this.

It's horrible to read.

You look like a mum and? Ltb if he thinks this is an insult

BananaLamah · 24/07/2024 22:28

That’s long enough to get in a double ponytail. Put the top bit in a ponytail and put the bottom bit in a separate ponytail. They’ll still be close enough together to give the impression of one long tail. Use clips to catch any loose bits. Or a side parting would look more current.
