Please help! I hate my haircut 😭

I've made a HUGE mistake with my hair. I had it cut yesterday and the stylist cut it FAR too short. It used to hang below my shoulders and yesterday I told her she could chop a bit off and give me a long bob, but I stressed that I needed to be able to tie it up as I'm a runner and I can't bear having hair hanging down my neck. She started cutting at the back and I could immediately tell she was cutting too much off, but it was too late.

She gave me what I'd describe as a short bob. It's chin-length. I can tie up the top, but the sides fall down and the back is really short and I absolutely HATE it. My kids said 'Oh wow, you had a lot cut off' and DH said 'You look like a mum'. It's frumpy, it's horrible and I'm so miserable. Hair only grows 1/4 of an inch a month so it's going to take 8 months to grow 2 inches, which I estimate will make it tie-up-able and not quite so hideously frumpy. I cried last night when I realised how bad it looks. I have no idea what to do, other than wear a paper bag over my head for the next 8 months. My hair is fine and flyaway and slightly wavy, which makes it hard to style too. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'd be pissed off OP, it doesn't look well cut at all! Really hoping once you've washed it yourself and used some staying products it will settle down. Hair is so important,it's awful when you're not happy with it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/07/2024 20:13

Don't have extensions, you'll end up with all sorts of problems.

Gotthefanonagain · 24/07/2024 20:14

It's really nice. I noticed she left a few longer bits? Could they be neatened up? Other than that I think it looks lovely on you.

MrsKarlUrban · 24/07/2024 20:14

When mine was cut too short I wore it in bunches - kept my neck nice and cool

I think at 50 I'm maybe a bit old for bunches 😂

When my hair was that length I used a straightening brush and plenty of conditioner. It honestly looks good op , and it'll be easy to style once you work out what's good for you.

Doggymummar · 24/07/2024 20:15

Oh, it looks lovely. I use a electric hairbrush on mine to add body as I dry. Sorry you don't like it. No extensions don't pull out, they moved down as your hair grows, need refitting about every 8 weeks. I reckon you can style yours lovely

Yeah, I think I'll wash it tonight and bung some products in it. I have some volumising spray that might make it look a bit better.

It will grow back OP. You have a pretty face shape and good skin and probably look really nice.
The hair looks like the sort of hairstyle a friend has been suggesting to me for years.
It would take me a year to grow it out so I feel your pain.

Blisterly · 24/07/2024 20:19

I think it looks great. I also have fine hair and I think any longer on you would look thin and flyaway - tempted to get a similar cut!!

Try using tongs in the middle bit only (not roots or ends), it will give it some oomph and it’s quick so minimal damage.

Don’t have extensions, with fine hair you’ll be able to see the join.

What sort of problems? I'm very low maintenance with hair, so I'm just rather ignorant about things like extensions.

If your hair is weak enough to break off from straighteners or colouring then stay far far away from extensions, the wreck your hair completely.

It's quite curled under looking and that's what is making it look a bit frumpier I think. Most modern bobs are very blunt and straight or styled wavier and more beachy - I think if you play about with styling you might feel better about it.

cheezncrackers · 24/07/2024 19:42

Here is the horror. I think I might have to get extensions. How much do they cost? I'm thinking horrible price probably?

Genuinely nice! I had all my hair cut very short to donate 35cms of it to charity and it was a shock😳🤣

But a few days later and loads of people (NOT my children who were less receptive!) saying how nice it was and I got on board!

Def a cap for running for now but it's not long till you can tie it.

I spent a bit longer styling than I had before and went for sleek bob some days and messy wavy look others- I enjoyed the change!

Now it's a couple of inches longer and I'm planning to cut it again- not quite as short as the charity cut...! But still prefer this to my shoulder length 'ideal' before which I just always tied up really...

WatchOutWatchOut · 24/07/2024 20:26

I can tell you it looks lovely if you like, and I know people are trying to be nice, but honestly it is a mumsy style. What you need is a side parting and a bit of volume to sex it up. Your DH won't be telling you you look like a mum then!

Extensions are high maintenance. After the eye-watering initial cost, there's a lot of aftercare, plus you have to be careful when washing and brushing. And then three or four months later they need to be replaced/reattached. It's an expensive process.

Squirrelsnut · 24/07/2024 20:27

It looks lovely! I would work on making it shiny and smooth with good products so it hangs well. 90% of your feelings are probably just the shock of the new.

I’m 46 and put my slightly longer hair in bunches for running
you will be able to tie most of it up and use a hairband to keep the extra bits out of the way

it’s not what you asked for but it does look nice. And having had hair a similar length for ever, it will be properly tie up-able in just a few weeks.

Donotneedit · 24/07/2024 20:29

I have taken kelp suppliments before to make my hair grow faster. I’ve had hair disasters in the past, I really feel your pain, but even though it might take time to get back to where it was, you won’t feel like this for all of that time. it looks lovely and heaps you can do with it as people have said, it’s just so violating when a hairdresser does this though isn’t it. Absolutely dreadful feeling. You may find that just giving yourself more time to do hair and make up while you’re getting used to It helps you feel a bit more in charge of how you look again.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 24/07/2024 20:33

Going by your picture and your face shape I think it really suits you.

I've had a similar experience myself recently. Mine was cut too short etc.

It doesn't help that hair seems to go into some sort of 'shock' when it's cut.

Luckily hair grows about half and inch a month so, if I was you, I'd wait it out. As soon as you can put it up, do. But, I'd advise against extensions. They're so high maintenance, not to mention expensive.

I honestly think your hair looks very nice and it does really suit your face shape.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 24/07/2024 20:35

Looks as if you have an oval face too (lucky you). The holy grail of face shapes for a multitude of hairstyles

Powderblue1 · 24/07/2024 20:37

It doesn't look bad but short hair must be styled, not just left to air dry. Bobs are so in at the minute as well. I'd go for it sleek or with loose waves. A middle part and half up will look nice too or get the smaller clips to clip half up.

Powderblue1 · 24/07/2024 20:38

cheezncrackers · 24/07/2024 20:09

Thanks for the tips. I don't have any big rollers, but I could get some. I can't use straighteners, because my hair just breaks off if I do. It's already highlighted and it's quite fine, so I don't think it can handle anything other than the most gentle treatment. I don't really style it. Usually, I just wash, blow dry and either leave it down or tie it up in a pony tail or a messy bun. That's why I had it cut a bit shorter, so it would have more of a style. £400 is probably a bit much. I'm worried that extensions will damage it too. Will they pull it out? Make it hard to care for?

Try one of the hot roller brushes. They're fab for shorter hair and you can use this once your hair is 90% dry. Its smooths and adds volume. Just use heat protectant first

StormingNorman · 24/07/2024 20:39

Curling a bob under does make it frumpy.

Jennifer Anniston’s bob was styled with straighteners and the bottom was only slightly turned under.

An alternative is to wave your hair. If a tong would be too damaging, you could look into rollers.

TheHuntSyndicate · 24/07/2024 20:39

It does look mumsy. But a brighter/darker colour would make it look more modern.
