Please help! I hate my haircut 😭

I've made a HUGE mistake with my hair. I had it cut yesterday and the stylist cut it FAR too short. It used to hang below my shoulders and yesterday I told her she could chop a bit off and give me a long bob, but I stressed that I needed to be able to tie it up as I'm a runner and I can't bear having hair hanging down my neck. She started cutting at the back and I could immediately tell she was cutting too much off, but it was too late.

She gave me what I'd describe as a short bob. It's chin-length. I can tie up the top, but the sides fall down and the back is really short and I absolutely HATE it. My kids said 'Oh wow, you had a lot cut off' and DH said 'You look like a mum'. It's frumpy, it's horrible and I'm so miserable. Hair only grows 1/4 of an inch a month so it's going to take 8 months to grow 2 inches, which I estimate will make it tie-up-able and not quite so hideously frumpy. I cried last night when I realised how bad it looks. I have no idea what to do, other than wear a paper bag over my head for the next 8 months. My hair is fine and flyaway and slightly wavy, which makes it hard to style too. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've washed it and it actually looks quite a bit better - it has a lot more body now. It was like a limp rag earlier. I can't do fringes (I have a double crown so it parts like curtains at the front), and god forbid I'm not having any more cut off!!!

It will grow. I'll just have to be patient. I've ordered some sea kelp and super-strength biotin supplements and a selection of head bands to keep it off my face for running and I'll just have to make the best of it.

Get some sea salt spray

You look great, cheezncrackers. It's a genuinely good look. You'll be getting compliments of the 'love your new haircut' type.

That’s long enough to get in a double ponytail. Put the top bit in a ponytail and put the bottom bit in a separate ponytail. They’ll still be close enough together to give the impression of one long tail. Use clips to catch any loose bits. Or a side parting would look more current.

Side partings are out it's about straight bang in the middle partings for the teens

Nope. Elle magazine and others are all saying the side part is back.

I like the length. I was thinking of cutting my hair in a Bob about chin length. You've a slim face and neck so I think it looks good. Just needs a bit of a beachy wave kind of styling maybe? But the cut itself technically isn't the best, just from the picture. I still think it's cute though.

FairyLightBan · 24/07/2024 22:40

Mmm, it's not a bad haircut, but it's been badly cut. Try styling with product, it'll help

BeretRaspberry · 24/07/2024 22:45

Can you put it in 2 small bunches for running. Mine’s shorter than yours at the back and I can get those in. (I do it when I’m baking).

I think a 'bob' suits about 3% of women. Most cannot carry it off. And the inverted bob is the worst hairstyle ever created! Shock

Nooo! The inverted bob is my go to when I want a big chop. It’s so flattering on round faces and helps anyone who gets a ‘ducktail’ at the back of their bob.

But I agree that bobs are very personal and there’s a bit of trial and error to find what works for you.

Here is the horror. I think I might have to get extensions. How much do they cost? I'm thinking horrible price probably?

Oh dear, that’s exactly what my hair looks like 🤣

CountFucula · 25/07/2024 08:28

Eh? What you have there OP is the coveted French Bob. I’d go all in and get a fringe too.

@cheezncrackers

It looks fine. And what's wrong with looking like a 'mum?' Confused

Nothing wrong with looking like a mum, but my mum is 80 and I'd prefer to look my own age.

Yeah I mentioned this too earlier. WTF is wrong with looking like a mum? WTAF is 'mumsy?' What a horrible misogynist description! Hmm Making out looking like a 'mum' is a bad thing. No-one ever berates men for looking like a dad! What utter rot I am reading on this thread!

Never heard of a dad bod then?

Inverted bobs are horrible.
Bobs make women look like identikits.

The heavily styled french/italian bobs only seem to exist in photos, or on TV shows.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 25/07/2024 13:50

Exactly the same happened to me earlier this year. If I'd been in my 20s I'd have cried!

To make it a bit more stylish I've flicked mine out instead of curling it under. I've had lots of compliments... maybe give that a go?

PreciousMahoney · 25/07/2024 14:42

It's just not at its best in that photo, it needs ruffled with Seasalt spray or even curl creme and a diffuser.

I think that would look great

PinkArt · 25/07/2024 18:16

The cut looks fine. Not ground breaking or amazing but perfectly fine. You're comparing it against styled hair though and yours (or mine or anyone's) isn't going to look like that with no styling.

If you straightened yours it's barely shorter than the Jen Aniston one. Maybe mine grows fast but it'd be to that length in a couple of months from where yours is now.
Give it some moisturising TLC over the next couple of months so it's in good shape - should help it as it grows and help it if you do a bit of straightening or curling.

KirstenBlest · 25/07/2024 18:53

Could someone post a photo of Jennifer Aniston's hair please.

Bit rude of your DH to say you look like a mum. I mean I know you are a mum but I hate when people use it in a disparaging way about a style of dressing or haircut. I think the cut looks good on you by the way but as others said you could style it in various ways to give a different impression.

I agree you. I hate "mum" as an insult.
Particularly from dads.

It's really badly cut,it doesn't lie right and the bottom is uneven.

It won't lie right because she's got it wet at the bottom and then slept on it! I think some people are assuming that's the walked out of the salon picture. I'd kill for mine to look that tidy when I get up in the morning.

Kingsleadhat · 25/07/2024 19:14

I recently ended up with a similar cut, not at all what I asked for . Looked like a cross between Doris Day and a Lego man . I went to another hairdresser and got some layers put into it and it looked loads better. Get a recommendation for a great cutter and get a restyle. Good luck!

LivelyBlake · 25/07/2024 21:00

Most hairstyles need to be styled with curlers, straightened irons or sea salt sprays to look good. Try these OP, and see what you think.

That description is so funny, really made me laugh Grin Laughing as someone who looked awful with a short bob

BurntBroccoli · 25/07/2024 22:41

I think it needs some volume on the top - one of those air over sized brushes would work well and only slightly curl it towards the end.
