Please help! I hate my haircut 😭

I've made a HUGE mistake with my hair. I had it cut yesterday and the stylist cut it FAR too short. It used to hang below my shoulders and yesterday I told her she could chop a bit off and give me a long bob, but I stressed that I needed to be able to tie it up as I'm a runner and I can't bear having hair hanging down my neck. She started cutting at the back and I could immediately tell she was cutting too much off, but it was too late.

She gave me what I'd describe as a short bob. It's chin-length. I can tie up the top, but the sides fall down and the back is really short and I absolutely HATE it. My kids said 'Oh wow, you had a lot cut off' and DH said 'You look like a mum'. It's frumpy, it's horrible and I'm so miserable. Hair only grows 1/4 of an inch a month so it's going to take 8 months to grow 2 inches, which I estimate will make it tie-up-able and not quite so hideously frumpy. I cried last night when I realised how bad it looks. I have no idea what to do, other than wear a paper bag over my head for the next 8 months. My hair is fine and flyaway and slightly wavy, which makes it hard to style too. Does anyone have any ideas?

Okay, I think you've all convinced me not to go for extensions. I've been looking at the photos of how amazing they look and daydreaming, but high maintenance would be a nightmare for me and I don't want to get into spending hundreds of pounds on my hair every few weeks. I had fake lashes for a few months and all they did was pull my natural lashes out and then they took ages to grow back, and I fear hair extensions would just be the same.

Right, so wash it, try some products to give it volume, get some kelp supplements and if all else fails, just stick a cap on my head until it's a bit longer. I think I can manage that 😁

I can tell you it looks lovely if you like, and I know people are trying to be nice, but honestly it is a mumsy style. What you need is a side parting and a bit of volume to sex it up. Your DH won't be telling you you look like a mum then!

Oh I'm glad someone said it. I can see why op hates it but styling is really key now.

It's okay - I know people were being kind (and I did appreciate it!), but it's mumsy as hell and that's why I hate it!!

Those are still 'mum hair' but with loads of make-up.

Zuma76 · 24/07/2024 20:45

I French plait my hair when it’s wet and let it dry and put product on and it will be a wavy bob

OneFrenchEgg · 24/07/2024 20:46

Thanks @cheezncrackers I'm never sure if reassurance or reality is being asked for. I'd probably go for a money piece and some salt spray and try to embrace a kind of messy vibe.

Ancestrysos · 24/07/2024 20:47

Don’t have extensions OP. I can assure it looks worse to you than it does to everyone else because it’s your hair/face. I actually think it looks really nice. I have long hair and would love to have the guts to do this, I always admire the mums at the school hates with the cool short bangs. Hair extensions are a bit try hard imo, (don’t shoot me down it’s just my opinion!!)

Hotgirlwinter · 24/07/2024 20:47

I’d be styling with a very lose loose wave to give some movement, use a good heat protector and just wave it ever so slightly- very on trend right now. I do think straight bobs can’t be a bit dated and make us look older, it needs a bit of movement. Either volume and flipped to the side or a wave and tousled a la relaxed French chic.

running wise just get a head band and some good sturdy kirbie grips. Or a cap.

Grandmasswagbag · 24/07/2024 20:48

It's not the length per se but yes the style is very mumsy. You need some messy waves in it and it will be absolutely fine.

Ancestrysos · 24/07/2024 20:48

I think have it dyed a very light blonde 👱‍♀️ I repeat PLEASE NO EXTENSIONS

Here is the horror. I think I might have to get extensions. How much do they cost? I'm thinking horrible price probably?

Oh this looks way nicer than I thought! I think it suits you.

Newsenmum · 24/07/2024 20:51

Ok so I’ve googled mumsy haircut and you look WAY nicer than that!

onceuponatimes · 24/07/2024 20:51

Hi OP. I had mine cut that length quite a few years ago. I didn't like it but once it had grown a couple of inches it looked a lot better. I just didn't get it trimmed for a few months and it grew out quickly.

Yours looks nice. Have you thought of using a hair clip to keep it off your face? I use them and I'm older than you

LuckySantangelo35 · 24/07/2024 20:51

If you were going to go shorter Op you were always going to need to do more in the way of styling

p.s can anyone recommend a good running headband? One that doesn’t dig in and doesn’t slip about?

whyamilikethis234 · 24/07/2024 20:53

Google
Upside down plait. Might be able to do that and into a pony

AndForAFortnightThereWeWereForever · 24/07/2024 20:53

@cheezncrackers

It looks fine. And what's wrong with looking like a 'mum?' Confused

It’s lovely. Is it wavy too, if so I would enhance the wave. It really suits you. Not frumpy at all.

Tracker1234 · 24/07/2024 20:56

What is it with hairdressers! Two years ago my normal hairdresser who is normally great cut it far far too short. I don’t know what he was thinking- he completely under estimated how slippery and fine my hair was and I think he thought chic Parisian choppy short bob. It was like a pancake.

it’s taken me 1 year to get it so that I can put it up but it was much shorter than yours. Shame on them. I do wonder if they cut it short so you keep having to have it trimmed to keep its shape not realising that you might never go back!!

Cocteautriplet · 24/07/2024 20:56

Just to add I think you look fab but if you did want something different you have a lovely toned jawline and could definitely pull off a pixie cut if you wanted to.

Salome61 · 24/07/2024 20:57

So very sorry, my hair is growing, thank heavens!

I'm 67 and since my husband died, had been scrunching my hair up into a ponytail. I asked a friend where she went, booked, walked in, and said could I have my hair like X. The lovely young girl cut my hair like X, a blunt bob, and it didn't suit me at all, a disaster. My hair is much, much thicker than X's and it just stuck out like a triangle.

I went to another hairdressers to ask for the cut to be 'layered'. I showed a photo of me ten years ago where it was layered - and I had a fringe. The woman said 'oh yes that looks nice' - then she said 'is that really you'. Christ almighty.

I said that grief plays havoc with your looks and I didn't speak to her again until it was time to pay.

johnson39 · 24/07/2024 21:00

I like it and I think once you've washed it yourself it's will look
Much better. I'd just wear a band to keep your hair back when running .

mdinbc · 24/07/2024 21:00

Ah, I think it looks good, you just need to style it a bit better. And looking like a mum isn't an insult - you are a mum!

LuckySantangelo35 · 24/07/2024 21:01

The hairdresser hasn’t styled it well at all! Call that a blow dry?!

She's been cutting my hair for years, so I'm particularly horrified at what she did. She KNOWS what my hair is like! And I was clear that I needed it long enough to tie it up. But she's shot herself in the foot, because I'm not going to get it cut for months now! So she can charge me for highlighting it, but she isn't coming near it with a pair of scissors for at least six months.

To be fair, it looked a lot better yesterday. Since then I've had a bath and got the bottom all wet (because I can't f*ing tie it up!) and then slept on it.
