Skirts like that are not flattering if you’re not thin

The outfit needs to look great. Not be of great quality or natural fibres.

DisneyHag · 24/07/2024 08:39

Skirts like that are not flattering if you’re not thin

Such a tedious response. In other parts of the world taking up space is what’s flattering, not trying to trick the populace into thinking you’re the size of a sparrow …

GoldFrame · 24/07/2024 09:20

my arse in that skirt would cover most of the world.

Or I’d be mistaken for the marquee

It was a fair point I don’t understand why you’ve taken such issue. Skirts like that can make you look a lot bigger than you are depending on where you carry weight, if it’s on your tummy it would be a poor option, if it’s on your thighs, a good one. Dressing for your shape is important to many people. Many of us don’t want to look several sizes bigger than we are.

It's completely tedious. I wasn't going to bother replying, but thanks for doing so.

I’m just disagreeing with you. It’s allowed!Grin

Genuine question, do people really not care about wearing something that makes them look much fatter than they are?

I’m quite taken aback that a flattering outfit is not something to be sought

Personally I don't think clothes do make anyone look fatter or thinner than they are.

Clothes don't have magic fat arse reducing properties so wearing that dramatic Wiggy Kit skirt isn't going to make the slightest difference to the size of my arse but I will be wearing a fabulous skirt.

It will be "flattering" because it's beautiful.

eggandonion · 24/07/2024 10:08

On another thread I read the advice that you should buy the size that fits and cut the label out...not buy the size you want to think you are. Bad fitting clothes exaggerate any perceived imperfections.
In the late eighties we visited friends who were house sitting. We had a hilarious time looking at the absent owners wedding album from the seventies...big hair flares kipper ties...perhaps a classic look is better!

GoldFrame · 24/07/2024 10:31

I disagree that clothes don’t make you look fatter or thinner, it’s just not true.

But I’m very much of the view that you should wear clothes that make you happy.

GoldFrame · 24/07/2024 10:33

@eggandonion totally agree on the size advice.

I don’t agree with this either, and am surprised you don’t know that some clothes can make you look much bigger or smaller.

i recently tried a dress that was loose cut. A shirt dress, with no waist. I looked like I was about a size 18 rather than 14. Like I was big all over, way bigger than I am. It looked awful on. I also got a bias cut midi skirt and fitted top and it made me look smoother, longer, slimmer than I am and was flattering.

clothes absolutely can change your silhouette.

Well I disagree.

Have you talked to your daughter about it ? DD wanted me to wear purple with silver accessories as it fit it with her colour scheme, bridesmaids were wearing a silver dress with purple accessories. We then went shopping and we found a purple swing dress with a built in necklaces.

eggandonion · 24/07/2024 12:46

If purple didn't suit you would you have worn it? I don't think I own any purple but will consider purple!
I can't match the bridesmaids who are in creamy white. Id be put off mumsnet 😁

I am from another part of the world. I will happily wear a silk sari with gold zari n a flaming fuchsia or orange or purple, even to meet the Queen. No issues with taking up space or drawing attention. I am not the size of a sparrow any more.

I don't usually like florals and puffy sleeves though. I do like both those Wiggy Kit dresses-surprisingly- and would wear them. Though if I am MoB I will be wearing a sari anyway!

I think most people find a happy medium between flattering and taking up space, surely.

I feel for you, OP - I bet you wish you hadn't asked. I've just read this and I wish I hadn't bothered, very unnecessarily vicious replies.
For what it's worth, I think your blue dress and black hat (and pretty suede shoes) are lovely. Not everyone feels right in or can afford cutting edge and fashion forward. Smart and appropriate and comfortable in your own skin is fine. Different strokes for different folks used to be fine. My BFs son got married last year and she wore something very traditional MOB from Roman or similar and looked and felt wonderful. That's what she likes. She is 54.
I think much of the 'advice' here says more about the person posting than actual advice given.
I hope you have a really great day at the wedding when it comes around ❤

eggandonion · 24/07/2024 13:28

I am always jealous of women who can wear saris. They suit every shape and size.
Id prefer to buy something that can be worn more than once. If it suits me I want to keep it.

DisneyHag · 24/07/2024 13:43

Why would style suggestions given on an anonymous forum reflect anything other than the life / experiences / opinions of the person posting? Confused

It seems such an odd thing to object to …

mitogoshi · 24/07/2024 14:27

@DisneyHag

Well Wiggy Kit is very expensive for what look like normal clothes.

We all have different budgets but also different attitudes to what things are worth. I personally can't justify that much on a ready to wear outfit because I work with people with literally nothing so it seems wrong, but that's just me.

The dress and hat in the first photo are both lovely (navy).
