I'd think about what you'd wear as a guest to a wedding and just try to take that up a level. But also bear in mind the style of the wedding - for example definitely not a MOB structured dress and jacket if your DD is planning a casual outdoor day.

Look at brands that are a bit more expensive than you'd normally go for. Do you have a budget on mind?

Perhaps slightly bolder jewellery than you'd wear as a guest, some great shoes, do you like a hat?

Quitelikeacatslife · 16/07/2024 04:35

It depends on the wedding vibe, is it glamping or castle? Black tie or summer or country? I'm about your age and would budget a decent amount if you can to get an elevated version of a style that suits you. Allow money in budget for hat/fascinator thing shoes bag nails and hair. Maybe make up if on offer or just get fresh make up.
I'd normally look at dresses £150 max but I guess I'd save up £500 for the whole thing and get a beautiful dress. But it will likely be a fit and flare maxi/midaxi because that is what suits me

Thank you, it's from an Australian brand called Sheike.

I'm Australian so I hope it's appropriate and I don't stick out like a Colonial sore thumb.

It's a beautiful silky fabric so should travel quite nicely.

We're also going to afternoon tea at the Dorchester when we're in London, then drinks at The Ritz. I'm also planning to wear the dress for that so hope it will be ok.

I'm attending a wedding at the end of the month, I'm the aunt of the bride, aged 55. I'm wearing this dress, with similar shoes, hair, with a headband style headpiece.

That's a lovely dress.

GoldFrame · 16/07/2024 06:55

Also loving @Lostsadandconfused ’s dress

Any more clues OP?
Sleeves or not? Neckline? Length? Size?
It’s helpful to know which colours suit you and which you avoid.
Is the wedding very formal or more relaxed?

Something like this perhaps?

That's nice. Outnet should have been on my list too.

Isometimeswonder · 16/07/2024 09:07

I think the "rules" are much more relaxed now.
@imfromwales I don't wear dresses so I would always seek out a trouser suit. So many beautiful ones around in lovely silky fabrics.
I don't mean a suit for the office!

elastamum · 16/07/2024 09:11

There is a brilliant FB page of Preloved Veni infantino MOB dresses. I bought a fabulous dress from there.

imfromwales · 16/07/2024 09:17

Morning everyone thank you for all.your replies I appreciate them all will look at some of the brands suggested
It's a summer wedding and thinking of a fit and flare style and not a pencil straight down type

Some of these have to be a joke - I wouldn't be seen dead in some of them and I'm early 50's.

When you're looking for MoB dress or wedding outfit, you are looking for something stylish but understated (some of the previous suggestions mean you would stick out like a sore thumb if the rest of the wedding party wasn't equally attired), elegant with clean simple lines. This is after all the Bride's day and not yours.

What size and height are you @imfromwales ?

We can browse the internet for more styles and suggestions if you can tell us that.

JudgeBurrito · 16/07/2024 09:41

@imfromwales While I agree with most PPs that the traditional MoB style is outdated, that doesn't mean you can't look in places that sell traditional MoB dresses, particularly if you're not confident with what is the norm/what you're looking for. My mum is 10 years older than you, but we found a lovely fit and flare style dress in a local MoB boutique. We did have to work our way through some of their (not great) suggestions and resist the 'oh dahhhling that looks fabulous', so I'd suggest you take your daughter or a close friend who will be honest about how you look.

What's your budget, size and shape?

londonmummy1966 · 16/07/2024 10:14

Hurr Collective has quite a lot of Zimmerman to hire. Self Portrait might be worth a look as there is a decent sale on at the moment.

I wore something similar to this (different colour). Had I not asked on here I would have ended up with something boring. I felt fab all day & love looking at the photos.

Yet, unfortunately, it is still very appropriate for some people.

To be clear "mutton dressed as lamb" is never appropriate for anyone.

suburburban · 16/07/2024 12:46

I found Hobbs very good for MOB but that was a while ago

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 16/07/2024 13:24

Me + Em have interesting dresses
Me + Em

And depends on budget, but it would be difficult not to find something stylish at Max Mara

I imagine there will be many weddings this year where the entire female cohort is dressed in Me and Em! Grin

Well yes, it's safe without being strait jacketed into MoB.

I'm quite taken by Wiggy Kit too.

no clue what some of these posts are about other than verging on rude.
HOBBS is your friend @imfromwales they have an occasion section as well.
there are hobbs dresses available on john lewis as well (often the sale items).

Edited

They are ok, but more expensive, no better than Yours or Roman imo
OP - don’t look for MOB outfits, just look for wedding guest outfits.
