I don't understand all the references to age. Do posters think that something magically happens at 50 or 60 or 70 which makes dresses they wouldn't be seen dead in at age 49 acceptable for 50+1 day?

Not on one specific day, but your taste and what suits you does change with age. I'm 47 and I've got some very old clothes that I've worn for decades, but also some things that just aren't appropriate any more.

eggandonion · 17/07/2024 21:22

Thats pretty @Somepeoplearesnippy .Are you tall?

Somepeoplearesnippy · 17/07/2024 21:31

@eggandonion

Lol no. I'm 5ft 1in! It's a full maxi on me but looks great with rose gold wedges. I was considering having it shortened but I think it might spoil the hang.

eggandonion · 17/07/2024 21:36

I can only see a kaftan type version now. I will keep checking rixo.

Oooo no

Christ on a bike! Read my post, it was an example of traditional MOB outfit not a suggestion!

I was taught that the word frumpy is misogynistic - some clothes are 'safe' yes - many men make safe choices, unflattering is also valid. What does frumpy mean in a male context? Genuine question

I’d use the phrase “old man”

That and frumpy cover it for me !

eggandonion · 17/07/2024 21:55

@Commonsenseisnotsocommon I think the oufit looks Phase Eight. I often use the site to get ideas. Some outfits there are more Conservative than others.
I like a bit of a sleeve...not necessarily a proper sleeve but a bit of a flutter. And not too low a neck. I am the target audience for anti aging neck cream. And a bit of stretch.

That's not really what I was getting at. It's posters on this thread and others who describe something too awful for them to wear but they'd expect an older woman would wear it.

NewName24 · 17/07/2024 22:03

That's lovely @Somepeoplearesnippy Smile

WaftherAngelsthroughtheskies · 17/07/2024 22:15

If your budget is healthy, look at Sara Roka, or Zimmerman. If you like rich jewel-colour fabrics and embroidery, look at Shibumi. As soon as I have an excuse for a MoG (or even relation of groom) I'll head to Favourbrook, my absolute favourite- and not to the sale rail, for once!
I think the suggestion from a pp to liaise with the bride and her mother was very smart.

GoldFrame · 17/07/2024 22:18

Zimmerman et al are no good for a size 18. I’m not thin and can’t fit into these designers.

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 15/07/2024 21:49

This is a good example. Simple, elegant and not showy.

I like this one the best out of all the examples on the thread..... but people are being so mean! I find these weirdly shaped baggy dresses and busy patterns so unattractive.

I think I should never visit style and beauty.... I always come away thinking I have useless eyes and worrying what people must be saying about my fashion sense behind my back! ! Grin

eggandonion · 17/07/2024 22:24

At my sons wedding I let the mob choose colours first. As mob I will let mog choose first to cut my options.
I love petite ranges. Petite makes me sound elfin rather than not very tall!

Honestly, the level of bitchiness is something else! How grown women can't just scroll by something they don't like without having to pull it to pieces is beyond me 🫤
I wouldn't worry what any of this lot would think about your taste though, some of their tastes are just awful!

Somepeoplearesnippy · 17/07/2024 22:43

I was at a wedding last year where the MOB wore something a bit like this but with a shorter cape. She looked stunning.

eggandonion · 17/07/2024 22:53

I toy with a snazzy jumpsuit. I loved jumpsuits in the 1980s! I love the caped one...but would going for a wee be a challenge?
I am really enjoying looking at all the brands mentioned. Some are more to my taste than others. Some are more in my budget than others too.

For the love of God.

Yes, well, again, preferences and trends do vary with different age groups and we tend to dislike things associated with people older than ourselves. I don't want to dress like my mother even if there are some clothes that would suit both of us fine. A twenty year old doesn't want to dress like me. So what?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 17/07/2024 18:17

This is from last season- similar vibe but with a co ordinating top.

This is incredibly beautiful. I wish I had had an event last year to justify buying it!

I'd never heard of Wiggy Kit- it clearly hasn't reached the wilds of West Devon yet- but that skirt is so beautiful I've been ogling everything in their shop. It's like if me+em had a sophisticated grown up sister her name would be Wiggy.

DisneyHag · 19/07/2024 21:56

Every time I’ve recommended Wiggy Kit here I’ve been torn to shreds.

Hmmph! Grin

eggplant16 · 20/07/2024 19:10

£400 for a skirt? is it just me?

eggandonion · 20/07/2024 19:23

@eggplant16 I would want an entire outfit for less than that. But some of the other sites mentioned are incredibly cheap and quality might not be great. It is so hard to tell.
I have 3 pairs of shoes that I wore once to weddings...assorted prices. I don't want a 4th pair eating into the budget.
