@imfromwales That's really nice OP, and very appropriate for the occasion. I'd actually avoid a matching bag, matchy matchy looks quite dated. Maybe white? Or silver, but metallics can look cheap. Don't match the material.

@NomNomNominativeDeterminism I think it's just how predictable that style is for a MoB dress, it doesn't show any individual style and is a bit of a boring choice. Also (sorry), while it looks okay on the model, most MoB aren't size 6, toned, and 40 years old, so generally the outfit doesn't look like that on the people who wear it.

It looked terrible on the model too. That "MofB" style is a uniform. There's no individuality and no personality.

You couldn't wear it to anything else , even, or especially not, another wedding, as it's so MofB.

And I know I'm banging a drum here but the age of the wearer is irrelevant. You don't magically lose your individuality and all interest in clothes, style or fashion on turning 50.

53 is no age at all.

Let me think 53 and size 18....I think colour is key here and interesting vivid accessories. Not the dress and jacket thing. A gauzy shawl if needed. Mix it up a bit. Chunky shoes, bright pink bag.

I have a shawl and blocked heel shoes I wasn't planning on the jacket it just comes with the dress
It's fit and flare and comes above my ankles

To be fair OP did ask 'what do we wear?' so obviously wanted a sort of uniform.

Age of wearer might be irrelevant, but the fact is all clothes are modelled on people who are generally thinner and more attractive than the usual wearer, and in the specific case we're talking about, yes the model is younger than most MoBs. Don't come at me, I usually agree with you when you start about age (maybe under previous usernames), but in this case I feel my point stands.

Oh not a shawl OP, the jacket is fine. Or an oversized blazer or something more modern?

eggplant16 · 17/07/2024 13:17

OOOh! Oversized blazer, good call.

When I said shawl I meant like a gauzy, interesting thing. Not pit head style.

More Judi Dench, less LS Lowry.

No, I get and agree with you. Even with all her phyiscal advantages that model couldn't make it appealing.

Sorry I should have been clearer I meant the posts saying and I'm paraphrasing, " terrible dress , OP is too young for it , but it's fine if you're 83"

Edited

The OP's dress is pretty and the jacket is fine. Dress is defintely wearable post wedding- always a good thing. Jackets over dresses can be difficult.

For that style of dress I prefer a cropped to waist length or just below, but boxy style.

I'm not suggesting any of these but the shape of these are good over dresses; particularly over full skirted dresses.

Your earlier suggestions had a little too much pizzazz for most...

I’m part of the global majority, @JudgeBurrito - so your ‘most’ might be statistically inaccurate!

And amongst my wider family and friends I’d probably feel a little underdressed in some of the outfits in my photos. Grin

londonmummy1966 · 17/07/2024 15:17

It sounds as if you would suit a more curvy cut so the boutique brands that cut for a vintage/hourglass silhouette might be worth a look - so for example (assuming blues are a colour that suit you). I think that a stunning dress with no jacket is a bit more modern looking.

Jasper Conran has a sale at the moment so might also be worth looking there - quite a lot of their dresses are styled with wedding hats like this https://www.jasperconran.com/products/e-shirt-printed-georgette-dress?variant=44288068681962

I'd resist going for too much all-over pattern, simply because of the photos. A single colour (perhaps with some sort of accent) will come over better in photos (think of the years ahead), especially when worn with a marvellous hat or headpiece. If money were no object I'd love to wear this (which Annabel Croft wore when presenting the Ladies' Finals at Wimbledon on Saturday). Suzannah does have other, cheaper, dresses and is inspiring with its pictures of how they are put together with lovely headwear.

Keep reading that mother of the bride dresses need to be super special, and yet the ones shown in the thread are no more special than any other wedding guest outfits eg Hobbs! Some one responded to my comment that some dresses are very expensive saying many on here can afford these prices- I don’t doubt it, but my point is these super priced outfits weren’t that great either! Hundreds of pounds for viscose or polyester! It’s possible to get a classy dress for much less. Just to add that I’ll be attending my granddaughter’s wedding this year, and I won’t be looking at any described as Grandmother of the bride dresses!

Saddlesore · 17/07/2024 16:14

Bignanna · 17/07/2024 15:43

No, it's not white. If you read the description you'll see that it's "a soft icy blue". And if you saw it on Annabel Croft last Saturday at Wimbledon it would confirm that it's not white.

GoldFrame · 17/07/2024 16:53

I think a lot of the dresses in here look like something you’d wear to go to Tesco on a hot day. Or at the other end, like you’re the Lady Mayoress

doweneedtowels · 17/07/2024 17:05

@imfromwales I was advised to wear something in a fabric i wouldn't usually go for.
So if you usually wear patterned/flowery go for something in a solid colour and vice versa

I normally wear plain or less patterns
All.blues suit me but colour like silver grey and blush wash me away
Red don't suit me either

Near enough not to be appropriate, though imo!

She's 53! My DB's MIL wore something similar. She's 73.

Fgs this white lark is ridiculous. My mil wore white and silver to our wedding, nobody thought she was the bride - 1. I wore a traditional ivory full length wedding dress, carried a bouquet 2. It was our wedding, we knew everyone there, bar the plus ones and even they would have had no difficulty working out who was the bride.

honestly, nobody talks about the bloody groom being upstaged or makes up ridiculous rules about colours male guests can’t wear.

im not in the uk and have never come across silly rules about no white or no black at weddings. At one friend’s wedding another friend wore an all white dress, nobody batted an eyelid, it was nothing like a wedding dress. Black is also worn without a second thought - there’s a very big difference between black wedding appropriate dress and funeral attire!

I like the blue floral and the little flower from Hobbs. I'm your age and wouldn't be an dad in a MoB lace two piece.

Interesting re chose something you wouldn't usually. I love patterns and colour and had a grey dress for my DB's wedding.
