Ask your daughter what she'd like to see you wearing on her big day x

My son is getting married on Friday. I am proud to say that my wedding outfit is from Vinted! Yes, I could afford something new and expensive but I really can't justify spending a fortune on an outfit I'll only wear twice - I'm going to another wedding later in the summer. Unfortunately husband has to be in "wedding party uniform" and had to buy a new suit...

This is a good example. Simple, elegant and not showy.

She’s 53 not 83

My son gets married at the end of the week and I'm wearing this

I'm 54 and I checked with my DIL and she loves it.

YabaJaba · 16/07/2024 20:33

I wore a classic mink shift dress with a cream silk jacket - shoes matched the dress as did the clutch. Finished off with a cream wide brimmed hat.

What difference does being 83 make?

You don’t feel 53 year olds and 83 year olds generally dress differently? Ok..

imfromwales · 16/07/2024 21:01

A question while I'm looking at websites and I appreciate everyone opinions taken a.whike to read I've been in work
My question with shoes and bag does it matter if I have suede shoes and satin bag ? Does it have to be same material x

That dress is awful. I'm interested why anyone thinks it would not be awful just because the potential wearer is 83. Or why being 83 would mean thinking it wasn't awful.

Massively. M 57 and wouldn’t be seen dead in that.

I’m 64 and also wouldn’t be seen dead ! Plus my daughter would think I’d lost the plot if I turned up to her wedding in it .

cfmtb · 16/07/2024 21:33

You can book a free stylist appointment at John Lewis, and they take all of your likes and dislikes and bring you some suggestions with accessories. That's what my mum did and they brought her stuff that wasn't in the shop yet etc. nice day out too if there's one local with the bride or anyone else ☺️
She ended up with a summer style dress - blue, with a matching cropped jacket, hat and shoes. The traditional look but with a bit of a modern twist, she looked fab.

IMO they don't have to be the same material, but the colours and style need to work together.

I'm going to the wedding of my niece soon, I'm wearing this from Farm Rio farmrio.uk/products/watercolor-floral-blue-maxi-dress?syclid=6ce2bc8c-019c-462e-b0f3-cf0e19a40f26&variant=47527474987322

Each to their own. I wasn't asking if you like it. Why do you have to be so bitchy??? Others have shared dresses I would never choose nor think appropriate but I'm not in the business of making bitchy remarks.

It will depend. I'd say it's not an absolute no-no, but it might not work. When is the wedding? I'd sort your dress before you look at accessories. Suede shoes also sound a little headmistressy to me.

NeedWineNow · 16/07/2024 23:03

My friend's mum wore something along these lines with toning accessories when her daughter got married and it looked lovely. Luckily it was a hot sunny day so there was no need for jacket/cover up.

Could someone explain what is wrong with the first dress? I love the long jacket - really love it. The dress just looks like a plain basic inoffensive dress to me. The neckline and the colour wouldn’t suit me personally - but that’s just individual likes / dislikes. What are the things about the dress (and the jacket?) that make people see it as frumpy and out of the question?

OP, I don’t think there is any rule that says your bag and shoes have to be of the same material … but you probably want a more reliable source.

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 17/07/2024 00:26

Sorry, possibly a mistake to invite more critique of the first dress - I was just curious because I don’t understand the strong anti reaction to it - but it’s late and @Commonsenseisnotsocommon I wasn’t thinking of how personal it feels when people strongly dislike a suggestion.

When I was 27, I thought this was absolutely perfect for mother of the bride. But now I’m 53 I’d feel slightly sad for myself if I dressed like this!

Putting · 17/07/2024 00:34

Can’t speak for anyone else, but it just looks very dated to me. It’s actually very similar to the MoB dress that my grandma wore to her daughter’s wedding in 1970.

@imfromwales
Show us some outfits you've previously written lworn for s6oecial events, parties, weddings, celebrations, anything and liked wearing so we can see your style and might come up with something in a similar vein. Cut off the heads in the pics if you want to avoid being recognised if that bothers you
Seeing someone's taste, and their body shape and size can really help, compared to trying to blind chose.
