I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

It was up until mid 90s. I moved High School in 95 from the Midlands to the North West in Year 9 (3rd year). In the previous school, visible socks worn with platform heels was all the rage. Arrived on the first day at my new school to find it was all kickers with the sock rolled down (like sausages) to not be visible at all.

I had to make some swift wardrobe adjustments, including getting rid of all the friendship bracelets that were laddered up my arms as they were strictly banned!

For those who wear wide leg trousers, would love to know if they work for shorter people? I’m 5”3 and I’m worried I’d look like I’m drowning in them.

Remember when there would be a huge difference in what was 'in' from one area to another!
When I moved up to the North East girls all had these massive rolled out fringes (v late 90s). They would have been very out of place in my home town!

Much earlier a friend had moved to my town from the South East and she had a very different style too.

I think its a bit of a shame you don't get that any more!

Anyway, off topic! As you were....

LunaNorth · 07/06/2024 20:37

I can’t bring myself to wear ankle socks with a midi skirt. I’d feel like I was going to a Butlins 50s Revival Weekend.

I find many of the current trends absolutely baffling. I’ve always enjoyed fashion, and now at 50 I’m all at sea.

WhenTheMoonShines · 07/06/2024 20:37

But I’ve only just discovered trainer socks. Don’t know how I was so late to the party with them but I love them now and don’t want to change back to longer socks 🤦🏻‍♀️

If cross body bags are over, what is current 🤔?

Totes. Slouchy bags. Half moon bags.

Even things like hairstyles and what was fashionable for school backpacks was totally different. I remember having a big black (I think Puma?) hold-all that was as big as me (was 5 foot nothing and skinny as a rake at that age) that I’d wear over both shoulders - you’d only see my skinny little legs poking out underneath 🤣 When I moved bags that were more fashion bags rather than sports bags were all the thing and I even remember satchels having a brief moment as the in thing!

It makes me a little sad too that everything seems so homogenised nowadays.

bonzaitree · 07/06/2024 20:47

some really simple swaps:

Centre parting.

Long socks

Low, slicked back pony tail/ bun.

half Moon handbag.

LunaNorth · 07/06/2024 20:50

Right, I’ve bought some wide leg jeans and one of those necklace thingies.

🐑

newusern99 · 07/06/2024 20:53

I've started wearing knee length compression socks under my trousers to help with my brain fog. Would it be a step too far to wear them with shorts this summer and pretend they are Nike sports socks?😂

Ciri · 07/06/2024 20:58

Centre partings have been and gone. 90s side partings and stripey hair are where it’s at now

FamilyDynamo · 07/06/2024 21:08

I've been losing weight for the last year and can finally fit into the still-with-tag-on skinny jeans I bought 4 years ago as an incentive to lose weight.
I'm of the belief with jeans you wear them until they really really wear out so these'll last until at least 2026. Maybe they'll be back in by then??

12345mummy · 07/06/2024 21:19

Trainers rather than ankle boots
Trialling pencil eyeliner instead of liquid
Shiny skin rather than matte
Bought some hair gel to try slick bun
Need to update my cross body bag
42 year old

Beepbeepvroomvroom · 07/06/2024 21:21

Ditched my skinnies for bootleg/flared and mom jeans.

Ankle socks with leggings only. I can’t bring myself to wear them with bare legs.

Sheer tights.

I have my ‘mum’ uniform of leggings, longer jumper, ankle socks and trainers for colder weather but struggling now for what to wear day to day in the summer. I’ve been wearing t shirts and mom jeans but when it’s too warm for that what are we wearing!? Dress styles and t shirt/bottoms style?

Never mind when the French exchange kids turned up! Totally different style!

I also think its a shame its so homogenised.

I always feel confused in these threads when people reference their teenage and early twenty children as reference points for what in fashion

Because generally speaking innovative trends start with teens and twenties or at least they’re the early adopters. If you have a young adult child who is interested in fashion they’re well ahead of the curve.

using them as reference points is nothing to do with wanting to look like them - in any event how could we?! - it’s an acknowledgement that they’re in the edgy bars and clubs; working in fashion/retail/modelling; they don’t care about practicality/comfort/longevity

The Uniqlo half moon (cross body) bags? I think?

LifeofBrienne · 07/06/2024 21:56

@gillefc82 I live in my wide dark blue jeans and I'm 5'1.

I like the way they look and they are the first jeans I've ever owned that are properly comfortable with my apple shape rather than either cutting into me when I sit down (or alternatively feeling like they are going to fall down when I'm walking around). Really hope they don't go out of fashion soon.

I've developed a thing for tops that are high and wide necked if that make sense - I'm sure there's a proper term for it - boat neck? In warm weather I wear the jeans with nice sleeveless tops, I've collected quite a few of those from Vinted! Also bought off Vinted for winter, wide neck slouchy jumpers that aren't too long, and for in-between weather some of these work with vest tops underneath.

Oh, and I wear comfy trainers with the jeans. Sometimes walking sandals in summer which I understand is very not on trend as the young people have a horror of showing their toes. Apparently.

Cattenberg · 07/06/2024 22:08

I’m short and wide leg trousers look awful on me, but flared jeans that nip in at the knees are pretty flattering.

I need a new handbag and quite like the half moon ones.

Roxy4321 · 07/06/2024 22:11

Skinny jeans are coming back Autumn / Winter 2024 as stated by Vogue .. hallelujah!

Maising · 07/06/2024 19:01

If cross body bags are over, what is current 🤔?

Cross bodies are still in, but shorter strap, nylon fabric, slouchier, with the bag sitting on the chest rather than woven strap, leather, structured shape sitting on the hip.

mdinbc · 07/06/2024 22:18

We've got 4 lengths of socks here, with different names:
no show socks - below ankle
ankle socks - just above ankle
crew socks - about 6' above anke
knee socks - just above knee

I've seen a lot of teens wearing birks or nike slides with crew socks, or even knee socks, but I'm not jumping on that bandwagon.

I never got on with no show socks because they slip into my shoes after 3 steps and I am forever walking on crumpled socks.

I'm sticking with straight or slightly wide jeans - no loose flappy material for me. I don't need to keep up with teens; but like to stay a bit current while not getting rid of what I like or suits me.

I agree. I love that we used to be able to spot the French kids a mile away. Fashions were so different. Now it's all the same stuff being sold in the same shops in identical malls all over Europe.

LlynTegid · 07/06/2024 22:29

I am not.

Fast fashion is a contributor to climate change. In general I think many things called fashion are someone playing a practical joke.

Phantasmagorically · 07/06/2024 22:32

From memory the French exchange students loved a Lacoste polo shirt and a pastel coloured jumper draped over their shoulders.

Yup, I’m 5’0” and LOVE my Toast Annie wide leg jeans, they’re really wide and I’m a size 14 and 53 years old. Everything that seems to make wide legs a no-go.

Yet…I think they look fabulous on me, far better than the straight and skinny jeans I’ve been in since my 30’s.

Sports socks or trainer socks - to me these are the same thing? Confused

trainers socks are those little socks that only go over your feet so you can’t seen them in trainers. Sports socks are thick socks usually ankle length or longer.
