I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

I've started wearing knee length compression socks under my trousers to help with my brain fog. Would it be a step too far to wear them with shorts this summer and pretend they are Nike sports socks?😂

Wait a minute, wait a minute! Socks can help with brain fog, really? For anyone?

It’s a fuzzy head type of brain fog rather than forgetful perimenopause type brain fog. I think mine is caused by low blood volume so they seem to really help.

@LifeofBrienne and. @Catnipcupcakes I think you’ve both persuaded me to take the plunge and try some wide legged ones out. Any brands you’d recommend? I’m a size 8/10, but with an hourglass figure, so would need something that gets over my bum but doesn’t leave a massive gap at the waist! And I don’t want anything with holes or rips in them - they’re likely to end up looking distressed enough through living in a house with 3 big dogs, so don’t need them starting life looking that way 😂

Never mind when the French exchange kids turned up! Totally different style!

I also think its a shame its so homogenised.

Ah I studied German - lots of flammable tracksuits and dodgy facial hair. And hair with either a sh*t ton of wet look gel (boys) or loads of crunchy hairspray and mousse (girls). Jeez, how grateful I am to have been born when I was. Can’t imagine anything worse than the prospect of being a teen nowadays.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 07/06/2024 23:02

I feel exceptionally out of date reading this thread. Everything I wear is outdated and honestly I just can't keep up. It's a little soul destroying feeling so past it. Plus I'm an apple so skinny jeans were the only thing giving me some shape. Wide legged jeans just make me look big all over.

StMarieforme · 07/06/2024 23:16

LividPink · 07/06/2024 13:41

The sock thing.

Vile. I can't even contemplate it. If someone wore ankle socks with shorter trousers in the 90s we'd laugh for a week and call them Michael Jackson or ask if their cat had died (relevance of cat's health unclear, but it was A Thing)

Trousers at half mast from respect for the 'death'

FiveTreeHill · 07/06/2024 23:17

I've bought some wide leg jeans, and some maryjanes with a cross style strap. Also going for oversize denim jacket and oversized linen shirt. Also low denier/sheer tights.

I've heard rumours that skinnies are coming back, but I don't think Gen Z will accept it. Jeans are difficult atm because I think only very specific shapes are in and they only really suit skinny people. Mum jeans are just as out as skinnies so it really is that very loose, mid rise dad Jean which isn't flattering on most and gives a nappy bum

It's hard because I feel trends move so fast these days and I don't want to buy something that's in now that's going to be out of date again next summer. Things like addidas spezials/gazelles are very ubiquitous but I worry will look dated next year.

Jakadaal · 07/06/2024 23:39

Wide legs with a platform trainer. Tighter fitting tops which i do struggle with
As I have big boobs and a 'top belly'. Fresh face make up and I wear colour - have ditched virtually all of my black. I finally found a denim jacket that fits and suits me!
I am turning 60 soon so trying to be classic with a twist of current trends.

MorvernBlack · 08/06/2024 01:03

LividPink · 07/06/2024 13:48

@tothesea ohhh, as if the trousers were a flag? I guess that makes some sense... You've addressed a thirty year bafflement 🤓

Same here, my Dad always used to say that, but couldnt explain it. Now I know!
😆
And Gazelles, whoever mentioned them above, are like the hokey-cokey, it's pointless storing them away.

I can't get on board with Mom jeans, my arse and thighs look huge in them. I love flares, not sure about wide legs. Skinnies always with my Docs. And those sports socks are an abomination. I think I may have strayed too far from the path of trendy and I'm residing in the witches hut.

barleyrice · 08/06/2024 02:53

I make sure to do the opposite of whatever they say on S&B.

echt · 08/06/2024 03:50

I have some wide leg jeans from early 2000s Toast that have become very cool indeed. Also some boyfriend jeans from Uniqlo that I wear turned up quite a bit with teeny sports socks and black Nike AirForce as I'm vain about my ankles. Jumpers and cardigans shortish and always wool. I splashed out on two Brora Fair Isle cardes.

To be fair I decided to wear these because I lost a lot of weight rather than being fashionable and it was young 'uns who told me I was on trend - a surprise in my very late 60s.

GogAndMagog · 08/06/2024 04:10

Rebel!

Spent 10 years conforming to school uniform

I will not conform to this. I only look good in a fitted jean.
Fashion isn't for me, but style is.
Lots of trying 'PIECES' 🙄on until an outfit says YES, that is the answer.

It used to be how many 'items' in the changing room. Now it is 'pieces'. Bloody hell.

I lived up north as a student. I remember being tempted by a shell suit, which were all the rage up there... but not down south. It was about £80 in the very early 90s. They’d have looked good with my reebok freestyle hi. But I couldn’t justify the price.

Cherryblossom24 · 08/06/2024 06:13

Oh I’m reading this and thinking I am terribly out of fashion as I love my skinny jeans, but also love the wider legs one too, so I wear both.

I also wear my hair in a middle parting (have done since time began, it’s what I suit), and I wear trainer socks 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I love fashion trends but also like wearing what I like and feel comfortable in, but then again, I’m 53 so maybe it’s just a who cares attitude I have now.

Nanaof1 · 08/06/2024 06:37

I will keep wearing what I always seem to wear. Loose and long tops with leggings or regular jeans in the winter and capris in the summer.
Most of the time, I wear no socks with my shoes and just keep them washed. Socks make the neuropathy in my feet worse.

Wide-legged pants would make me look weird and if I were to tuck in a shirt, I would look much like an Oompa-Loompa.

Forty years ago or so, leggings and stirrup pants became trendy. Wasn't super fond of the stirrup pants but loved the leggings look and never gave them up, even when no longer trendy. Then they came back in style. I won't be alive when they become trendy again....LOL!

Only if you wear them with sandals and the shorts should be jean material. 😉

Oh stirrup pants! Loved them! With kitten-heel ankle boots and a slouchy knitted top sliding off one shoulder. In my 70s now but still reading this thread with interest - wide-legged linen trousers, trainer socks and simple trainers, boxy t-shirts and a gilet (I'm a uniboober who prefers to cover up rather than wear a foob).

Emeraldsrock · 08/06/2024 06:50

Have switched the socks and much prefer. No more worrying about the socks slipping down my feet.

Hoop earrings instead of studs.

Enjoying Cargo style trousers again, Uniclo and Zara are good especially if you aren’t super tall.

I do wear trainers and chunky flat sandals more but haven’t given up my wedge trainers and wedge sandals for when I am wearing skirts. To me they are my compromise as a ( millennial heel girl). I am 5’3” and I just think an angle on the heel is so much more flattering.

My hoody’s are a bit more oversized and some of my tops. I draw the line at really oversized clothes as they swamp my frame.

I think I am slowly finding a balance between what suits me and my figure and what is current.

Have you tried Abercrombie and Fitch Curve Love range? I'm same size/shape as you and find these fit well. They do a straight leg and a wide leg style. They're well cut to fit a smaller waist/bigger hips.

Bulkypeepants · 08/06/2024 07:00

My god, just wear what you want to wear and worry less about if the Gen Z's have ditched skinny jeans!

FWIW, the sports socks over leggings with Birkenstock mules is so over done now

Emeraldsrock · 08/06/2024 07:06

Bulkypeepants this thread isn’t for you and that’s fine. But can people please stop judging others that are interested in staying current. If you aren’t interested then why click on this thread in style and beauty?

SloaneStreetVandal · 08/06/2024 07:07

The best update anyone can give you to look stylish/vital is take your health/fitness seriously. If you exercise and eat well, you will attract a second look in whatever you wear.

I also think buying quality clothing brands wherever possible is a wise investment. I'd rather own one pair of luxury brand jeans than 5 pairs of M&S (and Frame, AG, 7 for all mankind et al have never stopped stocking lots of slim/skinny jeans! BIG UPDATE - slim fit is taking pole position again in the new season ranges; thus you CAN stop pretending to actually like wide leg jeans 😂).

VoteHappy · 08/06/2024 07:12

DancingNotDrowning · 07/06/2024 14:37

Maybe not the thread for you then Grin

On the contrary
Wearing exactly what you like and NGAF about what's " on trend" is actually on trend.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/06/2024 07:13

In all my years on mn I don’t think I have ever been on a s&b thread where these three things a have not been said:

  1. oh god just wear what you want, slavishly following fashion is pathetic
  2. everything looks better on slim people
  3. only buy a few quality pieces not high street stuff

and there, just as I was really enjoying the thread, with good natured discussion about socks and 90s fashion, all three of those crosses on my bingo card are ticked off 🙄

Miriad · 08/06/2024 07:23

Apparently the French tuck is out and makes you look dated? Chunky shoes are in, as are multiple ear piercings, natural looking hair colour and texture, plain clothing with no logos or twiddly bits, and oversized clothing which is a bit androgynous. I find myself shopping in the men’s section for clothes with an androgynous boxy fit.

Basically it’s what we used to wear in the mid 90s.
