What little updates are you adopting to stay current?

I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

I got laughed at a couple of years ago (Queen's jubilee party to be exact) I was wearing a very stylish leopard print sundress and black fluffy sliders. It was by a middle aged man in a not particularly well fitting T-shirt and jeans. I didn't respond!

Princessfluffy · 13/06/2024 17:19

I have ditched skinny and straight trousers in favour of barrel jeans and wide legs.

Also ditched anything knee length. I think patterns date quickly so I have been selective about those too.

I have bought some quite out there PJ style trousers

I agree anything knee length just doesn’t look right at the moment. I have some knee length skirts and dresses and I sometimes put them on in the morning, look in the mirror and then immediately take them off again, something just seems so dated. I’m sure knee length will be in fashion again eventually so I’ll pack them away until that happens!

saturnspinkhoop · 13/06/2024 18:55

Eek! I’ve recently bought a knee length skirt. It don’t have great legs and knee length suits me best.

Primark cos you might not use it for long!

RampantIvy · 13/06/2024 19:38

I might buy a new raincoat, some boots and a thick jumper ☔

Garlicker · 13/06/2024 19:40

Very appropriate for this glorious summer,@RampantIvy!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/06/2024 20:32

☔ the only bright side is I'm wearing my sport socks so don't have cold ankles 😂

HappyGirlNow · 13/06/2024 20:44

I’ve been thinking knee length was dated but see photo and also photos of Kate Moss at Taylor Swift’s party.. seems knee length might be making a comeback..

Yay knee length! Me=fashion forward.

LunaNorth · 13/06/2024 20:57

If anyone listens to the Keep It Tight podcast, one of the presenters had DEFINITELY been on this thread this week.

Talking about wide legs vs skinnies, side parting vs centre, ankle socks vs footsies…

RampantIvy · 13/06/2024 22:45

Wide legs are out for me at the moment because they are just too impractical in all the rain we are hving.

PouredConcrete · 14/06/2024 00:49

Same!

I’m in the West Country - it should be good for a few years.

I bought one oversized striped shirt to wear last year with shorts, and wore it so much over the summer that I've bought another 2 or 3 and am now living in them tucked into wide leg jeans. Or tucked into a denim midi skirt. I feel quite current but not stand out so, which is how I like to dress.

Where did you buy the shirts please?

CurrentHun · 14/06/2024 09:26

I see a lot of Maharishi type trousers (think All Saints/Natalie Imbruglia) on the young uns. Not for me.

there must be someone on Instagram who talks about exactly this question of small tweaks to update, any recommendations?

H&M, M&S and Hush!

RampantIvy · 14/06/2024 19:57

I bought an oversized white linen shirt last year, but it has just been too cold to wear it so far this year.

Wear a long sleeve top underneath it that's how I am wearing mine trying ti bring a bit Sumner clothing into the cold June we are having
or put it under a jumper

Hidinginbed · 15/06/2024 07:33

I went on a massive update (with the help of Instagram people who look nice) last year on Vinted and updated my wardrobe massively- I was stuck in 2006 before I had children and had no clue. So much fun, bought loads of stuff and probably spent no more than £300 in total. However, I have worn NONE of it this year as it’s so fucking cold. Raging 😡

WayOutOfLine · 15/06/2024 11:33

@Hidinginbed could this be the time you invest in some 'transitional pieces' (or whatever they call them!) back on Vinted? Nice trenches, light jacket type things? I have! I've also been wearing a couple of summer dresses with shirts tied over the top and chunky boots/socks, but even I was driven back into jeans this week!

WayOutOfLine · 15/06/2024 11:34

@Hidinginbed so frustrating though, I don't think we are getting our wear out of properly summer clothes this year- unless you go on holiday perhaps.
