I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

@Wexone I went silvery in covid, partly out of necessity and partly as an experiment.

I’m blonde so it was a matter of taking all the warmth/gold out of my highlights and cooling my hair right down with platinum toner, so not even true grey. My hair was mid back length and I styled it in big waves (Kate Middleton style). I always wear a full face of make up and I dress well so thought I looked great.

at the beginning of the year I had the chop and went bright light blond and the comments floored me! Over the past months everyone from friends, my yoga teacher, colleagues, the dentist receptionist have told me how great the new look is and that it “takes ten years” of me.

now I’m not under any illusion that I actually look mid 30’s but clearly the previous look aged me considerably

Great for you. grey hair works for some people and it also needs to be good condition. you being blond means yoir coloring it's better. my sis in law looks fabouvlose when she , rarely puts a colour in, it gives warmth to her face and makes her eyes pop. but unfortunately the grey grows like witches streaks. makes her face look cold especially as she wears it in a bob and its really coarse and wiry and dry looking. it makes her look closer to 70. she proudly says she doesn't dye her hair but then in another sentence complains about how haggard she looks 🤷‍♀️ people can go grey all they want but on some people it ages them

DancingNotDrowning · 10/06/2024 08:51

@Wexone you obvs gave up on my post half way through Grin

The TLDR version is I thought I looked great with grey hair, in fact I did not, evidenced by the multiple comments on how much better/younger I look since going back to blond.

we’re in agreement: grey hair is aging. And as I said in a previous post, it’s disingenuous to state saying this is ageist.

I've got my Citizens of Humanity jeans bootleg flare style out of the loft and am delighted. Bought them after giving birth, they were so fashionable at the time. They fit like a dream and I've had loads of compliments. So happy I can wear them again ☺

AbsolutelyFemale · 10/06/2024 14:58

Also yup can absolutely agree that grey hair is mega ageing.

CormorantStrikesBack · 10/06/2024 16:01

Ahhh I haven’t dyed my hair in six months and have inches of grey. 🙈😁

but its just a couple of inches!.....Im sure the rest of your hair still looks young!😆

im having such a wobble. I do see some women who I think look glam with silver hair. But agree it can also be aging. My hair is very dark brown and the non stop, needing to dye my hair as the roots were so obvious was such a pita.

really not sure about the alternative unless I go blonde so the grey regrowth isn’t as noticeable.🤷‍♀️

After reading this thread, I’ve ordered a half moon bag and as my skinny jeans wear out, I’ll replace them with bootcut jeans (the most flattering style IMO). But I won’t be wearing my new bag against my upper abdomen like a stoma bag - there are limits.

I noticed last weekend that the local teenagers dress kind of like dancers in a music video. They wear very short shorts with contrasting piping along the hems, black strappy tops, white crew socks (often Nike) and trainers. The overall look is usually monochrome.

Me too with the bag, I opted for a Primark one and very impressed for £7! I know, throw away fashion but I normally have a backpack attached to me and will only use this on rare occasions.

implying you cant look nice in glasses!🙄
Glasses are to see, like hearing aids are to hear.....they dont make you look old or unfashionable they make you look like you have some impairment, thats all.

As for wide legged trousers, they def arent for everybody. If you are shorter or wider then they can make you look dumpy.

I’m sure I only wore wide legged trousers when I was in my early 20s and skinny.

Even cargo trousers, I never liked the stone, khaki sort but did have black smart Karen Millen ones and a sort of parachute tie bottom hem skirt in a light cream colour. Have seen people wearing similar recently. Would I wear any of these again? No.

I am naturally brown but have gone blonder with highlights so the grey isn’t as noticeable

You know what annoys me?

I see older women in trendy looking outfits, bright colours or eccentric fashions and Ive never once thought 'mutton dressed as lamb'....Ive always just been impressed with their confidence and individual sense of style.
and yet I still dither about wether a top is too loud or 'can I show that much of my calf?'. I really need to just go for it sometimes!!LOL

MyFirstLittlePony · 11/06/2024 21:41

Yes @henlake7 just go for it

we are free …. And nobody really cares… and if they care, we don’t care that they care 😂

Bootleg jeans and trainers, Birks or boots never heels

LunaNorth · 11/06/2024 22:11

I’m returning to this thread in hope of inspiration. I’ve always loved clothes and fashion, but since I turned 50 my confidence has fallen off a cliff, and I’ve started to feel anxious when it’s time to get dressed.

It’s very discombobulating.

Sports socks or trainer socks - to me these are the same thing? Confused

Sports socks are short socks. The trainer socks are invisible socks. Unlike @MaryFuckingFerguson I don't think sports socks are unflattering at all. I think new styles just take some getting used to.

I'm old enough to remember when people moaned that skinny jeans looked terrible on everyone. Then people decided they ONLY looked good in skinny and wide look terrible.

The sock thing.

Vile. I can't even contemplate it. If someone wore ankle socks with shorter trousers in the 90s we'd laugh for a week and call them Michael Jackson or ask if their cat had died (relevance of cat's health unclear, but it was A Thing)

I wear socks. I'm not a skinny model size either. And I'm almost 60. I think I look ok.

I wear either black with stripes like here or white.

I have a really clear memory of looking at a magazine in the staffroom with a colleague in the early 2000s till of pictures of people in skinnies tucked into knee boots. I said I'll never be able to wear those! She agreed saying it was high fashion and it wouldn't filter down! I was living in boot cut and flares at the time.

I wore my wide leg jeans at the weekend and 14yr old DD said how good they looked 😁

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/06/2024 06:39

Teens have been wearing long socks and sliders for a few years now. It filtered down to include Birkenstocks, crocs and trainers. I remember when the sliders and sock trend was in fashion the first time around in the 80s. I’ve also started to wear longer socks. I wear a lot of leggings including under dresses as they’re more comfortable than tights and the trainer sock with gap looks dated now. Ironically something, which looked really frumpy (socks and birkos) and dh and I laughed at when we moved to Germany in 1999 is now on trend…

CormorantStrikesBack · 12/06/2024 06:53

I wore socks and crocs the other day, admittedly only to the village shop next door and the lady working there laughed at me 😆

As an older woman (52) I’ve gone past the stage of giving a fuck about what you or anyone else thinks of my outfit!

Plus if DM at 83 can rock Gazelles and Lucy and Yak dungarees and quilted jackets (the trendy ones) then why not? Her friends are equally trendy, one of them got the M&S sort of aviator style faux leather jacket but it looks really good on her.

farleysrusks · 12/06/2024 18:25

LOL at being laughed at in the village shop

LOL at being laughed at in the village shop

Twice this month. Once by the shopkeeper for the crocs and socks and then by my next door neighbour who caught me out in a late night dash in my bright green tiger pyjamas 🙈😁
