I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

I was very resistant to everyone saying skinnies were out as I lived in them and leggings, but I've now switched to bootcut/flared jeans and flared leggings in either black or a print. I actually feel they suit me better as I'm very straight up and down so they give my shape more balance, so I hope they stay around a while! Has to be fitted with a flare though, can't get on with wider leg and baggy styles.

What about midi skirts with a vest top or tshirt in summer? That was my previous go to with chunky dm style sandals or trainers. I still like and will wear that but am I going to look horribly dated?!

I'm very straight up and down too, and I waited a long time for flared and bootcut to come back so now I am so pleased! It took soooo long.

I think I can wear baggy (although flared and bootcuts are most flattering) if it's low rise. Otherwise it looks weird. High waist looks ridiculous on me because of my short torso.

Springwatch123 · 27/06/2024 04:29

I think converse hi- top, and basketball boots /hi-tops have had a revival in our area.

RampantIvy · 27/06/2024 07:08

so glad silver is on its way in

I had no idea that silver was "unfashionable".

I don't see many people wearing gold, and haven't for years. I am also cool toned and never wear gold, apart from my wedding ring.

I loathe low rise on me. I am pear shaped and low rise is so uncomfortable. I hate having to yank my jeans up all the time as well.

Crossingsout · 27/06/2024 07:16

I've been wearing wide leg trousers and socks pulled up for years. Didn't know I was ahead of the curve! Dh60 wears shorts and pulled up socks and looks like an ageing scout. It is quite disturbing.

DoYouSmokePaul · 27/06/2024 20:52

Low rise trousers give me horrible flashbacks to my teenage years, when you would sit on high stools in biology class and everyone’s cracks/thongs/pants were on show. 😩 Also I’ve never not had back fat even when I had a BMI of 17. HIGH WAISTS FOREVER.

I don't think it was ever unfashionable, it was just not on trend as all the Tiktok girls have been wearing the chunky gold hoops because of Hailey Beiber.

High waist looks horrible on me even my partner who knows nothing about fashion agrees (in a scientific/engineer way - he said "the proportions are weird"). Low rise works really well for my body shape (straight, short torso, long legs) so I am glad they're back.

suburburban · 27/06/2024 21:37

I'm the opposite and prefer a high waist.

Yeah I think high waist flatters most body shape that's why it reigned for so many years (over a decade?). I'm just glad it seems most jeans styles are on the shops now. I haven't seen low rise in ages until recently. That's all I wore (low rise flared) when I was young in the 2000s. Finally caved in and tried skinnies for a short while (I think 2013-2016) because that was all I could find in the shops! When boyfriend jeans came, I was so glad but secretly wishing low rise flared comes back. Now we have low rise flared, straight, bootcut, wide leg (although this looks less flattering on me, I think I need a small waist for this)...jeans shopping now is so fun!

I don't know if it's newly-fashionable in the UK but I currently see quite lot of Uggs on the street in Melbourne, mostly much younger women to be sure. It's winter here, but I don't think it's about warmth. Both slippers and boots are in and the sole is sturdily corrugated.

IMHO, Ugg are for indoors only, possibly stretching to going outside to pick up the newspaper from the nature strip. I thought this at 50, 60, and have not changed my mind nearing 70.

To be fair I reckon I could reverse the trend on my won by going out and about in a pair. I'm having lunch in the CBD today, so time to try it out. Grin

@echt I still have my Uggs from 2014, let me help you reverse the Ugg trend.

OrganicKombucha · 28/06/2024 03:16

I just backread and re: grey hair -- my partner has always had grey hair since his late 20s. People have asked me if he was my father.

So I finally convinced him to let me colour his hair. He just turned 50 but now the dude looks like he's 35!!!

Of course it helps that he has very minimal wrinkles and a young face, but those were all offset by his thick grey hair!

ExhaustedCoffeedrinker · 28/06/2024 08:10

Well bugger me I am accidentally fashionable with my side parting!

Pavolvaa · 28/06/2024 09:46

I have quite a lot of flowery / patterned midi dresses and jumpsuits from past few years & don’t feel I can wear them anymore !

I do, but I don't live somewhere that is fashionable and, as far as I know, no-one judgea you for wearing last year's fashions.

I spent £80 on a lovely dress from Seasalt 3 years ago. There is no way I am getting rid of it until I have had my money's worth.

Do people actively look at someone and think ‘Ooh, Bettys wearing trainers from 2022. How awful!’ Are people really that judgemental ?

(Looks at what one is wearing, T-shirt from m and s that is at least five years old!).

Every other woman in the street is wearing a midi dress, usually floral, here in London.

Yes probably not the 25 year olds, but still very popular.

And - IMO still generally look fab on everyone.

kerstina · 28/06/2024 12:24

I ditched denim jeans . Worn for years and am totally bored of them . Started wearing wider legged trousers, combats a while ago much more comfortable and again bored of skinnies although I do still wear them .
Have worn a material Alice band for years . Keeps hair off my face and makes me fine hair seem a bit bulkier somehow.
Dewy highlighter updates my make up and not wearing eye liner on lower lash .Make up much more subtle.
I noticed I started looking at Brands that hadn’t appealed so much before like Alll saints, Whistles, Jigsaw .
A nice squashy soft leather bag from M & S
Are ballet flats still in fashion as just bought some lovely ones in All saints sale

Springwatch123 · 28/06/2024 14:28

Apparently ballet flats are back in, after being out for a few years.

Thank you! After asking my late-20s daughter she said, with some approval, that yes, they were back. Then proceeded to show me the new styles on her phone - very platformed. As for the Crocs...

We had a lovely lunch and now I think of it I need to get the newspapers off the nature strip. In my slip-on old-style Uggs. Smile

RampantIvy · 28/06/2024 23:29

I will never be "current" with footwear. I especially dislike the current fashion for very chunky footwear with platforms. I don't need the extra height and they make my feet look enormous.

MidnightMeltdown · 29/06/2024 00:16

henlake7 · 26/06/2024 15:53

I think vans, converse and gazelles/sambas are all classic styles now that will probably never go completely out of fashion.
Unlike when I was young people dont seem so willing to give up comfort for trendiness! Alot of quite 'on trend' outfits seem to be finished off with comfy shoes these days.

Makes me very happy. I have wide feet and a weird gait meaning very flat comfy shoes are best. I'll happily live in trainers, baseball boots or tennis shoes!
Weather is too hot at the moment to worry too much though so Im going with my trusty 'fitted tee, maxi skirt and converse' combo.

IMO people dress in such a varied way thats its hard to look dated...although a couple of things do stand out to me.
Like 3/4 trousers, they really do seem to have an age bracket (esp if teemed with a ditsy print top).
Also white trainers, floral dress and denim jacket. I think you can do 2 out of 3 but if you complete the trifecta then you are telling everybody you are 30s-40s and about to pick the kids up from school (I mean its not a bad look but it feels done to death IYKWIM?).

I dunno, trainers were fashionable in the 90s and then went out of fashion for years. I reckon that heels will almost certainly be back (but hopefully not for a while yet!). At some point the younger generations will 'discover' them and think that they are new and exciting - fashion always goes in cycles.

I think most people who wear converse don't care much about fashion. I know people (older than me) who have been wearing them for decades. It may be a generational thing, but I've never understood the appeal. To me, the coloured bootie type that everyone seems to buy, look like clown shoes. Maybe I'm missing something but they just seem so unflattering.

I hate low rise and high rise! It shouldn't be so difficult to find regular mid-rise jeans 😫.

Personally, I think that high rise are only flattering on very slim people. If you have any kind of tummy, the extra fabric will emphasise it. I'm a size 12 on the bottom and I look like Humpty Dumpty in high rise. I feel like I just need to add a set of braces to hold them up.

Low rise suit nobody imo. I don't want to see anybody's bum cracks 🤢

Nooooo not Uggs! They are not made for the UK. They don't look good at the best of times. Soggy Uggs are even worse.

PeachPairPlum · 29/06/2024 10:48

Crocs and socks are very much in at the moment.
