In my opinion skinny jeans went out with the ark. I only wear them when wearing knee high leather boots. With ankle boots, a classic bootcut or a straight leg.

tittybumbum · 10/03/2024 18:45

As someone else has said, irl I've seen a very very small number of women who look good in skinny jeans. They emphasise everything. Skinny legs, chunky legs, short legs, bandy legs, knobbly legs.

Yet somehow half of MN seem to think they look great in them.

ItsallIeverwanted · 10/03/2024 18:54

I've started to get boring, but on all these threads, I end up saying: Claudia Winkleman! She loves her tight skinnies and boots, looks edgy- one tip she goes with is to wear black or grey ones, not the pale denim parsnip look, plus she always wears huge jumpers which if paired with huge trousers would drown her.

I wear slim/skinny black jeans, blue wide legged and flares, all can look great depending what they are styled with. I think blue faded parsnip legs are a bit dated if the truth be known.

Wear with chunky boots, or cowboy type boots, or just something to balance out the legs, and I think skinny still has a place. My dd's are late teens though and they think my baggy jeans look the best.

Where do you live where no-one wears skinny jeans? In a city where it isn't muddy and never rains?

Ever since the mumsent fashion police have posted that skinnies are out I never never not seen rails and rails of them still in the shops, and I still see lots of people wearing them. I see other jeans shapes as well, but saying that skinnies went out with the ark is simply not true.

@RampantIvy
Lots of unfashionable things are worn and in shops. Doesn't make them fashionable.

Whatever you do you'll be wrong. I teach gen zs and they openly mock all the fashion choices of over 30s. A wide leg would be some sort of criminal offense I'd imagine. It's best to just wear what you want.

This. Teen DD mocks my terrible mum clothing choices. She and her friends do not wear sport leggings and flared trousers. I do not want to look like a teen. I am happy wearing my ankle boots and skinny jeans.

Indeed, I do not want to have muddy trousers and that’s why I wear skinnies under my boots.

God I'd sell my soul for flattering jeans. I've been wearing jeggings (mostly with trainers or calf boots) with loose tops forever but was horrified at my reflection when sitting down at the hairdressers (mirror to the floor) - my knees and upper calves have elephantine proportions. I have narrow hips and bum but short stocky legs.

I need to find something else and have so far experimented with joggers (comfy but lazy), leggings (nope), bootcut jeans (better but I still have big fat knees), straight leg jeans (not bad but look overfilled in the thigh area), cargos (surprisingly OK but what d'you wear with them) and wide leg jeans (better but don't know what to wear on top as a fat person, plus they're hopeless in wet weather).

I love the look of "mom" jeans or balloon leg jeans on other people but honestly they just make me look even bigger. Sure I need to lose weight, but I wish I could find a style whilst I'm still large. I'm a size 18-20.

Lots of people do not care a jot about whether something is "fashionable" or not.

HarrietSchulenberg · 10/03/2024 21:05

As someone who's still wearing bootcuts from last time around, or maybe the time before that, I'd say that everyone should just wear what they feel good in. Skinnies were never a good look for me, and neither were low rise. Wear what gives you confidence.

Librarybooker · 10/03/2024 21:09

I like skinny, straight and wide leg mostly. I think I prefer the wide leg jeans once the weather is less wet. I like chunky jumpers with skinny jeans when it’s very chilly.

@Galliano
"Blimey...Catherine is very well turned out and attractive but pretty much epitomises frumpiness"
I 100% agree. There has never been a fashionable member in the Royal Family IMHO. All old fashioned frumps. I didn't think Diana was cool when I was younger either-I thought she dressed like a frump, too. Meghan was stylish and knew what suited her, but she's not relevant in this context, any more I guess!

DreadPirateRobots · 10/03/2024 22:14

Smartiepants79 · 10/03/2024 10:33

I’m not royal follower but Catherine is widely touted as being one the best dressed most elegant women in the world.
How in the hell is she ‘frumpy’?
She may not be cutting edge, catwalk fashion but frumpy????!!!

Sorry, but she kind of is. Her choices are very conservative, and generally dated to boot.

RampantIvy · 10/03/2024 22:20

I don't know what kind of world people who think Catherine is frumpy live in.

She never looks scruffy or wears ill fitting clothes and she wears colours that suit her. She always looks elegant. She might wear clothes more fitting for an older woman but she isn't frumpy IMO, old fashioned or conservative sometimes, but not frumpy.

mondaytosunday · 10/03/2024 22:28

Why are they frumpy? I think of frumpy as shapeless oversized drab clothing, not skinny jeans and boots!

This is exactly what I think.
If a woman that looks like Kate is frumpy then what hope is there for 95% of the rest of us.
Classic and elegant is not frump. Conservative is not frump.
Frumpy is old, baggy, ill-fitting clothes. Scruffy hair and no personal grooming. Mismatched and aging.
Cutting edge fashion she may not be but she does appear on many best dressed lists and is emulated by thousands of women across the world.

I would love to know what people who think Catherine is frumpy wear.

She's not frumpy. Just unfashionable and dull. When she has stylists dress her for an event she's a great mannequin but when she wears casual clothes she looks like Kathy from Stroud.

Kittythecutest · 10/03/2024 23:04

These threads on frumpiness recently have made me realise I haven’t a clue what frumpy even means 😂 I’ve always thought of frumpiness as ill-fitting, shapeless clothes- like baggy fleeces and shapeless jeans that don’t match.

Not the Princess of Wales who, while sometimes wearing boring or conservative outfits, is always immaculately tailored!

Wait until tomorrow , skinny jeans and ankle boots will be back in fashion!!

sittingingold · 10/03/2024 23:44

Is this why the picture of Kate was killed?
Grin

YouG0GlenCoco · 11/03/2024 10:39

I think people must have very different ideas of what frumpy means! To me I always thought it was old fashioned, matronly, dowdy, favoured by an older lady type of things! In fact the word frumpy to me instantly conjures up the image of Farmer Hogget's wife in the film Babe 😂

I would consider Catherine's style to be classic and well suited to her position. I myself favour an oversized sweatshirt, leggings and trainers on the school run but I don't imagine our future queen would look right in that!

Teddleshon · 11/03/2024 10:47

I have always thought Catherine dresses older than her years but just don’t see her as frumpy. Too many people follow fashion rather than what suits them.

Pepsimaxedout · 11/03/2024 10:48

obsessedwithfreshbread · 10/03/2024 09:09

Mother's Day picture of Catherine released today in skinny jeans and ankle boots so if they're good enough for the princess of wales, (and she never looks frumpy) then I'm happy to keep them!

Yeh but that picture has been doctored so the skinny jeans and boots have probably been photo shopped in.

I'd also hardly call the Princess of Wales a fashion icon.

GettingStuffed · 11/03/2024 10:55

You don't have to wear jeans I only own one pair, mom jeans because I can't feel them .

On Saturday I wore a mid calf dress with ankle boots and DH said I looked great, usually his comment is fine
