I know why I stick to skinnies and ankle boots in the winter. I went to put on my cropped barrel legged cords with new white trainers today and my legs and feet were freezing! I’m back in the jeans and boots and big socks now till the weather changes.

The dictionary definition of "frumpy" is "dowdy, drab, old-fashioned" and I think Kate fits that

Crikey.

I don't think she ever looks dowdy or drab. Old fashioned maybe, but never dowdy and drab. She always looks elegant.

Fair enough, I just don't understand not taking an interest in what teenagers (or come to that, any age group) wear

I'm not interested in what teenagers wear. I'm 65 and wear colours that suit me and styles that suit my body shape. I deplore fast fashion so I try to update my current wardrobe with one or two new pieces every year.

I have a pair of thin cotton combat trousers that I love and have worna lot over the last two summers, but it is too cold and too wet to wear them yet.

It strikes me that there are two schools of thought on mumsnet as to what is considered frumpy.

The fashionistas think that anything that isn't in fashion is frumpy, and are reluctant to state what they wear when challenged.

The rest think that anything that is dowdy, drab coloured, shapeless, badly fitting and basically is unflattering on the wearer is frumpy.

I hate the term, but I am more inclined to go with statement 2 on this.

I prefer to look stylish and elegant rather than fashionable.

The fashionistas think that anything that isn't in fashion is frumpy, and are reluctant to state what they wear when challenged.

"Frumpy" is used on here usually about anything which isn't "flattering" or "doesn't show off your figure".

By "fashionistas" if you mean the posters who are probably going to be on the Parisian thread or who will suggest non mainstream brands, I really don't think that is the group who call anything"frumpy". I never do, but lordy, I've posted choices and I've had my choices ripped to shreds by some posters as being "frumpy" because they don't meet the above criteria.

I can't respond to your second paragraph. My clothes might not be "flattering" by the standards set by some posters but they are never dowdy, drab coloured, shapeless or badly fitting.

I got my arse handed to me a few years ago when my teen DD said she'd style me to go to a concert, I said what would she choose...and she said nothing at all in my wardrobe would be suitable! 🤣 I decided to wear my own unstylish clothes.

LoobyDop · 11/03/2024 13:23

Frumpy to me is wearing a collection of garments that may be fine individually, but are incongruous and incoherent together. So a few years ago the classic one we used to argue about was shiny black heeled ankle boots teamed with bootcut jeans and a fleece. Another one I see a lot now is a floral dress with similar boots and a North Face anorak. There’s no consistent feel to the outfit. It’s not fashionable, it’s not a classic, timeless look, it’s just clothes chucked on because who knows.
The PoW does not do that.

I feel quite sympathetic to The Princess of Wales for having to take so much care over what she wears when - to my eyes anyway - she really doesn't seem that interested. It would be like me being made patron of Rural Life and having to pretend to like the countryside.

NewYearResolutions · 11/03/2024 13:43

I think all the criticism to the Princess of Wales is very mean. Good on her to not care. She looks gorgeous to my eyes. I don't care people on the internet thinks she is frumpy.

rightsaidurs · 11/03/2024 14:20

The only reason wide leg jeans are "in fashion " now is because they were worn by all these influences /cat walk models etc
They aren't practical or flattering on the majority of people
Yet the same people who wear these dragging along the floor claim skinny's are so "old fashioned "

If skinny jeans and ankle boots are frumpy?
SgtJuneAckland · 11/03/2024 14:25

I wore current fashions the first time around, I'm too old to do it again. I will wear what I like and what is comfortable for me.

They look awful. You can't see their feet.

I do think skinny flares/bootleg can be quite flattering as long as you can see the footwear and they fit nice.

I wear all sorts including the above and skinny jeans and thick leggings.

Blimey...Catherine is very well turned out and attractive but pretty much epitomises frumpiness.
Of course you can wear skinny jeans and ankle boots if you want to but they will inevitably look a bit dated. I work in a dressed down industry where I don't want to create a perception that I'm old, might think I'm a stuck in the past way so for me I would never wear them to work. Skinny jeans still have their place but for me that's tucked into wellies or walking boots at the weekend!

Frumpiness? For real? She obviously can't be too 'out there' or too fashion forward. She is expected to look classy, elegant, timeless and often businesslike and she always pulls this off. She looks amazing in everything.

It's a bit wide of the mark to call her frumpy!

Floisme · 11/03/2024 16:03

If - Lord help us all - I were in the royal family, I'd be like an ageing Beatrice and Eugenie, unable to resist trying All the Clothes, and constantly chided on here for not dressing for my age or my shape. There'd be post after post lamenting, 'Doesn't-she-know-what-suits-her-yet?'. I have quite a soft spot for them in my hard republican heart.

LoobyDop · 11/03/2024 16:54

I really like the way she dresses. Yes, it’s very conservative and a lot more formal than anything I’d wear day to day, but I spend surprisingly little time opening hospitals or attending church services. And people rarely turn up places to watch me get out of a car.

Lookatmeivechangedmyname · 11/03/2024 19:44

Confidence is stylish. If jeans and ankle boots make you walk with confidence you'll look 100 times better than someone on trend skulking down the street trying to hide themselves.

I'm a bit Eugenie fan. She seems lovely but also dresses for her figure and role in society with a love of colour and I respect that.

Floisme · 11/03/2024 20:09

Oh no don't tell me she's started dressing for her shape too! I liked them both best when they used to turn up at weddings with giant pretzels on their heads.

Teddleshon · 11/03/2024 20:27

I take a huge interest in fashion and actually I do keep my shoes current as footwear choices can be very ageing. I will always though choose a cut and colour that suits me above everything else. I just can’t feel good in something that highlights my bad bits and hides my good ones.

I do really dislike the “what the fashion editors are wearing” pieces. A handful look great, the majority terrible imo.

Of course the whole shifting of silhouettes etc is only to try and get us to completely rethink our wardrobes the whole time - move from skinnies to wide leg jeans and everything from your shoes to your tops have to also change. I love keeping clothes for decades and pairing them with new bits. I always love the fact that my very fashionable 22 year old daughter always borrows my clothes.

Onelifeonly · 11/03/2024 20:36

You should wear what suits you, body shape-wise, and what makes you feel good about yourself. That thread about what 'frumpy' means just showed there is no consensus and probably depends on your age and what has been 'in fashion' during seminal times in one's life.

I'm old and in my time I've worn skinny, tight, bootleg, straight and flared jeans, also low waisted, high waisted etc. Personality I think skinny plus ankle boots is just fine on the right figure. Only teenagers and the very fashion conscious really care.

FluffyFanny · 11/03/2024 20:44

I really like the looser legged jeans and am hoping it's a long time before skinnies make a comeback. Wide-legged tailored trousers are super flattering compared to slim tapered trousers.

I wear them with chunky trainers, block-heeled ankle boots, wedges or chunky flat sandals in the summer.
