Mother's Day picture of Catherine released today in skinny jeans and ankle boots so if they're good enough for the princess of wales, (and she never looks frumpy) then I'm happy to keep them!

A) they aren't ankle boots in the sense people mean. She's wearing outdoor boots
B) she's hardly fashionable. When styled for events she can look amazing. Especially after Meghan came and dressed so much more on trend. Left to herself Kate is bordering on frumpy. All lk bennet wedges and nude court shoes with skinny jeans and frock coats. Thank goodness she's getting some proper style advice now.

I’m not royal follower but Catherine is widely touted as being one the best dressed most elegant women in the world.
How in the hell is she ‘frumpy’?
She may not be cutting edge, catwalk fashion but frumpy????!!!

She looks good when styled for events. Left to her own devices in her casual wear she is dull to the point of frumpy. She's just very dated

Wide leg jeans and trainers, I think

It's been pissing down here for the best part of the last 5 months. Wide leg trousers that mop up water are not an option.

I wore leggings and boots earlier to go for a coffee because I want to stay dry.

And, I don't think Catherine looks frumpy. Sometimes she looks a little old fashioned, but never frumpy.

LolaSmiles · 10/03/2024 13:33

I love my skinny jeans. They suit me so I'll wear them. I'll only wear jean cuts that suit my frame and personal style.

I don't think it's the specific cut of jeans that looks dated, frumpy or stylish, but how it's styled.

There are some skinny jean outfits that looks dated, just like there's a certain type of floral dress, white trainer and fitted denim jacket style outfit that looks like the overdone mum uniform that was everywhere. There's nothing inherently frumpy about any of the individual pieces, and if people like them they should wear them, but certain combinations will date.

Revelatio · 10/03/2024 13:41

Fashion doesn’t mean you blindly wear what’s in. You can be fashionable and stylish by wearing what’s in trend that suits you.

DeliaDerbyshiresSlippers · 10/03/2024 13:43

I don't think individual (or combined) elements of clothing are 'frumpy' nowadays. If that word has meaning any longer it is only amongst the chatter of older women - I only see women my age and older (50) caring about it.

In our youth it meant plain jane or not really caring. And 'not really caring' is kind of cool now. I don't think anyone outside of internet forums even gives a shit.

Wear anything that pleases/suits you. Like a pp said, life is so pathetically short. Enjoy your ankle boots and skinnies.

....Just don't surprise me with scrunch bum leggings Grin

Just trousers/jeans with a looser shape, there’s all sorts to choose from. They just look fresher these days and imo are more forgiving on a more diverse range of figures.

Catherine is ridiculously skinny and her look will always be horsey classic, she’s not in the fashion business.

Skinny jeans are just a bit dated. Plenty of people still wear them but their tyranny has ended, for now. Wouldn’t say they are frumpy though, often they are more on the sexy side of things if anything.

Edited

'Horsey classic' 😂Love it and spot on!

kitsuneghost · 10/03/2024 13:52

I think they are fine unless they have heels.

Catherine looks a healthy weight, which many people have forgotten looks like. We are so used to an overweight society.

Skinny jeans and ankle boots are a classic look in my opinion. Not frumpy.
The baggy jeans and trainers look might be in fashion but doesn't mean it looks good on everyone!

Agree. I saw a sea of ladies wearing these today at an out of town shopping centre. It's just another uniform.

I love my skinnies and they look good on me. I actually think it's better to wear what looks good and rock it than dress for fashion and it look crap. Because honestly so many fashionable styles of jeans do look crap. WearsMyMoney blog has a feature on barrel leg jeans today. Someone has to be having a laugh with those as they look bloody ridiculous.

Hoplolly · 10/03/2024 10:35

Looser jeans and trainers are more "fashionable" right now but I think they are a one way ticket to frumpsville.

Absolutely this

Bobskeleton · 10/03/2024 14:01

If you style something well, it will always look good, even if it's not currently favoured by the front row fashionistas

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/03/2024 14:04

You can look good in the latest trends at any age.

This is so true. And it's a truly stylish lady who can wear a trend that suits her and totally rock it. I envy these ladies so much!

This is very different to being a slave to fashion.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/03/2024 14:05

Wear what you like and feel comfortable in
I'm sticking with skinny Jeans as they're the best style for my small frame and short legs
I'm wearing black superstars on my feet today
I wore my jeans out for a meal last night and didn't even notice what others were wearing

NOWorNeverNowhere · 10/03/2024 14:21

God i wish i had have kept my jeans from 2002!! Frayed flares etc.

Gettingonmygoat · 10/03/2024 14:54

Why does anyone care what anyone else is wearing ?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 10/03/2024 14:57

I absolutely hate the look of trainers.
I wear ankle boots. I like it.

I don't wear trainers because to me, trainers are frumpy and mum/gran-ish.

Iloveshihtzus · 10/03/2024 15:25

I’m always amazed at how many people come on to S and B and say that they wear skinny jeans because they suit them best. I have never seen anyone, outside of Kate Moss - and women built like her, ie about 5’6” and skinny - who looks good in skinny jeans.

There are so many better options out there - as pp have noted, almost every other style of jeans is in fashion now. Straight leg jeans, turned up at the ankle, with thick-soled Chelsea boots are perfect in the rain.

And while I agree that there is a difference between fashion and style, truely stylish people keep their look up to date with a nod to some new elements in their look.

I follow a lot of older women on Instagram and they are all very stylish but also modern. I would never consider Princess Catherine to be modern, she reminds me of most upper class, country house, horsey types. The look suits her but it isn’t really stylish, although I too would wear that look if I was hiking in the countryside at the weekend.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 10/03/2024 15:32

Ok, various things from this thread - Katherine - clearly she got a new stylist a little before the late Queen died, it might have been influenced by her realising she looked frumpy next to Meghan, it could just have been emerging from the baby years and having the mental energy to prioritise this.

for the OP and others, if skinnies suit you, keep wearing them, maybe combine with more current footwear or tops, but go for it. However, skinny jeans don’t actually suit lots of women, if you have great legs and they are your best feature, then they are good for you, but as you tend to have to wear a baggy top to balance them out, if your boobs or waist is your best feature, skinnies aren’t best for you.

RampantIvy · 10/03/2024 15:33

It depends where you live. After walking back from the coffee shop I found mud splatters all the way up the back of my biker boots.

And I hate clumpy footwear.

louderthan · 10/03/2024 15:36

Just wear what you want! The shops are still full of skinny jeans.

Bluegray2 · 10/03/2024 15:37

I think it is, I would wear skinnies with ballet flats or trainers

RaininSummer · 10/03/2024 15:43

Wide leg jeans and trainers would make me look and feel frumpy. Skinny jeans all the way here.

Fizbosshoes · 10/03/2024 16:07

I haven't stopped wearing skinny jeans because I think they suit me. Sometimes I wear them with boots, sometimes with trainers. I don't really wear them in the summer.

I'm v short and worry that wide leg trousers will add volume I don't want! (And DD has gone out in wide leg jeans today and I remembered how awful wide jeans are when the hems get soaked because it's raining!)
...but I realise this is style and beauty...which isn't necessarily the same as dressing practically! 😃

Wear skinny jeans and ankle boots. It can be that simple, you can wear whatever you want, for ever 💪The "rules" aren't real. Your life and choices are primarily yours.

Exactly this. You wear what you like, what fits you, and what you feel comfortable in. I am far too long in the tooth to give a single fuck about what some randomer on MN may or may not describe as "frumpy".
