DH bought me a Swarovski necklace a few years ago and I've never taken it off,

I have the matching earrings which I wear most days but do take off for bed.

janruarry · 16/01/2024 14:23

I have a 18k necklace that I inherited, I have 9k gold clicker hoops that I sleep in, and 18k plated ball back studs that I also sleep in. Also have two cartilage piercings that have titanium studs in.

None of this goes green at all

monpetitlapin · 16/01/2024 14:23

I think the main question is what metal they are made of, rather than what shop they came from?
What metal are you looking for? E.g. if you want silver, rhodium-plated silver is most resistant to oxidation. If you want gold, don't put it on next to platinum (a weird sort of displacement reaction can happen that discolours the gold) and make sure you go for one with a high gold content. 9 carat is only 37.5% gold (hence the hallmark being 375).

You probably want 18 carat (75%, hallmark 750) if you want it to stay pristine in all circs, but the higher the gold content, the softer the metal is, so the jewellery isn't as well-suited to everyday wear.
I've learned the hard way that the best way to take care of it all is to take it all off when showering, gardening, cleaning or swimming (especially swimming for silver). Also to store it all correctly.

Cartier bracelets - worn for decades never removed except for cleaning. Never had any discolouration.

caringcarer · 16/01/2024 14:35

I have several gold and either diamond, or ruby and diamond, or sapphire and diamond necklaces. I rotate them but always wear one of them. They are all only 9 carat but all have remained as new. I've got several (10) 9 carat gold rings with diamonds or diamonds and either Rubies or sapphires and most days I'm wearing 2 or 3 alongside my wedding and engagement ring on a different finger because engagement, wedding and eternity rings are platinum. I used to love platinum now I much prefer 9 carat yellow gold. I have a few 18 carat gold bolts but not so keen on the colour. I wear my gold watch quite often too and various 9 carat gold bracelets with either diamond, ruby and diamond or sapphire and diamond. Jewelry is my thing. I like to match whatever I'm wearing with jewelry. I've got quite a lot of amathyst jewelry too. I used to wear that a lot but now not so much.

I wear sterling silver rings and a silver pendant all the time, they never get tarnished (that includes swimming with them on once a week or so).

JoanChitty · 16/01/2024 15:04

My wedding ring and my late mum’s wedding ring. They are D shape and 22carat yellow gold. My late dad made them both. He worked for Garrard and did a lot of very high end work. I never take them off .

kittykarate · 16/01/2024 15:06

I wear a sterling silver pendant pretty much 24 x 7 and it has never gone tarnished. It's definitely the metal choice + maybe your skin chemistry that makes a difference.

LadyLolaRuben · 16/01/2024 15:11

A white gold ring with sapphires and diamonds. Worn it constantly for 24 years. Good as the day I was gifted it

Bells3032 · 16/01/2024 15:14

9ct Gold necklace (the chain was from my late mum and the pendant made to match). never tarnished. worn it every day for years and shower with it etc

gano · 16/01/2024 15:17

I don't take any of my jewellery off. It's all gold/silver though.
Small gold sleeper earrings, i bought from a jewellers on holiday on Wales.
Gold pendant on on chain - inherited.
Four gold rings - Three were inherited and one gemset ring that I bought from QVC.
Gold and silver bangle - 21st birthday gift.

Maya brenner makes beautiful jewellery which can be worn all the time

LadeOde · 16/01/2024 15:36

Everything @monpetitlapin said, except i'll add 9 carat gold doesn't change colour and is the strongest metal for the reasons @monpetitlapin has already given. Therefore for everyday wear I would recommend 9 carat gold. I've worn the same 9 carat gold earings for the last 15 yrs and all my sibs have various pieces of 9 carat jewelry for their everyday wear, we wear them to bed and in the shower and they don't change.

QOFE · 16/01/2024 15:39

Silver pendant that my now ex (but still best friend) made for me. Had it on for 12 years and don't intend to ever take it off unless for medical procedures!

AngryBirdsNoMore · 16/01/2024 15:40

Tiffany silver key chain necklace. Worn almost every day for ten years, including in the sea, in swimming pools, in extreme hot and cold weather.

I don’t think actual gold or silver go green?

graciemcadams · 16/01/2024 15:41

Thanks for all your replies, really helpful :)

I wear this most days. It's simple and goes with everything.

If it’s silver then it will oxidise. It needs to be cleaned regularly with a silver polishing cloth, the tarnish comes straight off. 9ct yellow gold or platinum are your best choices for everyday wear though.

Look for waterproof jewellery. I've been impressed by Atolea.

MabelQ · 16/01/2024 15:58

Wedding and engagement rings (white gold) and a sterling silver necklace pendant. Worn the necklace nearly 24/7 for 13 years now I believe? Took it off for a couple brief stints but otherwise it’s been on through swimming pools, showers, gardening, the births of two children, painting, and a decade plus of showers in hard water. Rings are 10+ years old now and while the engagement ring had the prongs rebuilt this spring neither it nor the wedding band have ever done anything more than turn VERY slightly - almost unnoticeably - as is expected for white gold that wasn’t rhodium dip refreshed.

None of these are high-end items; all were purchased from chain store type jewelry shops.

bobomomo · 16/01/2024 15:59

I have a silver necklace I wear most of the time (I do take it off to wear special jewellery for specific occasions) and silver hoop earrings, both bought from jewellers via amazon! The pendant I bought from Santiago de Compostela.

SecondHandFurniture · 16/01/2024 16:09

Solace Jewellery and Bohomoon. I have a stainless steel bracelet from Solace I never take off and I only wear their earrings.

HappyAsASandboy · 16/01/2024 16:11

Atolea does great (inexpensive) jewellery that doesn't discolour.

I've only tried the silver not the gold.
