Silver goes green on me too, I can’t understand how people can wear it non-stop!

SkaneTos · 16/01/2024 16:36

A necklace with a small silver cross, gift from my neighbour when I had my confirmation.

I don't know if it's real silver or not, but it does not make my skin green.

Apart from wedding and engagement rings, the only piece of jewellery I never take off is a 9 carat gold "mizpah" ring given to me by my DGM before I went to university. Her great aunt had been given it by her fiance in the first world war before he went to fight. He never came home and she wore it on her wedding finger for the rest of her life and never married 😥. It's unbelievably precious to me. ❤️

dreamcatchmee · 16/01/2024 16:54

My Tiffany silver heart I've worn for years and it still looks fantastic. I have just recently swapped it for a 9k gold necklace. I went for 9k gold rather than plated/vermeil as I want to not take it off! So far, so good.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 16/01/2024 16:57

I have a silver cross and chain I brought from essentials just after the first lockdown .. The only time I've taken it off is when it mysteriously vanished from around my neck, and I had to buy a new one.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/01/2024 17:05

The only jewellery I never take off is my white gold small hoop sleeper earrings - present from DH a few years back . When I asked for them I was imagining larger chunkier hoops - but these are comfy and I don't need to faff around with them - plus I always had odd earrings after losing one .

I outgrew my wedding and engagement rings around 10 years ago but I have my MIL's engagement ring I wear in place when I go out .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/01/2024 17:08

I do like silver but can't wear long term without it irritating me - hence the white gold .

jenny1209 · 16/01/2024 17:08

Tiffany. Sterling silver and never tarnishes

sprigatito · 16/01/2024 17:12

The only thing I never take off is a silver Tudor rose on a fine chain. It was a present from my very gruff and laddish 18yo son who does not share my passion for history, in fact I didn't even know he was particularly aware of it 😂. He had to go out of his way to get it and he was really excited when he gave it to me. It means so much to me.

WolfFoxHare · 16/01/2024 17:13

The only jewellery I wear almost constantly is a tiny pair of sterling silver hoop earrings that I wear when I’m not wearing something more fancy - they came from the Corn Exchange in Manchester, before the IRA blew it up in 1996.

I do have a lovely platinum wedding and engagement ring set but I only wear them when I go out of the house. DH isn’t very impressed by that but my fingers change size too easily depending on whether I’m warm or cold and they bug me when I try to sleep in them so it’s tough.

graciemcadams · 16/01/2024 17:14

Thank you everyone. Going to treat myself next pay day to 9ct gold necklace!

I have Maya Brenner bracelets with my kids initials. It’s 14k yellow gold and I haven’t taken it off since DS2 was born. It’s fab quality! I also wear a yellow gold 14k necklace from Etsy I never take off and equally as fab!

WolfFoxHare · 16/01/2024 17:24

I’ve got a lot of sterling silver and I’ve never had any of it go green or make me go green! It will go darker/black/oxidise if it isn’t regularly polished, of course. I can’t wear anything except sterling silver, gold or platinum or I do get a rash though. My ear piercings used to swell up and go red with any cheaper metal, until I started wearing my silver sleepers all the time.

Jewellery Cleaner | Silver Cleaner for Jewellery | 8oz Sterling Silver Polish for Necklaces, Rings & Earrings | Clean, Shine & Protect amzn.eu/d/3tJqOHG I regularly clean silver with this. Best affordable silver I have found is Thomas Sabo and Monica Vinidar especially on sale. Swarovski only for events as it is plated and ruins eventually. 9k white gold I have from regular high street jewellers.
My favourite yellow gold is 14k which I normally buy on holiday (Turkey) much cheaper. It is golder in appearance than 9k so looks nicer imo but isn’t as soft as 18k so is more durable. I have bought thin gold chains and then I can change it up with 9k pendants I find here. Etsy is good for finding some unique pieces and more affordable than the high street. I also like moissanite as I can’t really afford diamond and there are some gorgeous gold moissanite pendants on Etsy or with other stones like sapphire etc.

JamMakingWannaBe · 16/01/2024 17:36

I never take out my belly bar. It's titanium from a "backstreet" tattoo/piercing parlour.

StellaAndCrow · 16/01/2024 18:22

That's lovely Mercurial. Has anyone seen similar in the UK or online?

I always take my jewellery off at night and in the gym(for its safety more than mine). But I always wear a silver ring I was given by my best friend every day, it came from Argos many years ago but he put so much thought into it. I also have a sterling silver cuff I wear almost every day even on holiday. A jeweller told me recently that it's probably worth a lot of money now, my parents gave it to me for my birthday one year.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/01/2024 19:08

Two gold bracelets.
One from dh and one inherited from GM

What a lovely gift from a neighbour and how nice that you've worn it ever since

Lifestooshort71 · 17/01/2024 08:09

Diamond stud earrings, the only time they come off is if I'm colouring my hair.

Auntieobem · 17/01/2024 08:23

If I don't wear silver for a while it tarnishes while in jewellery box - doesn't tarnish if worn regularly. If it tarnishes I just clean it with bicarb, silver foil and hot water.

TinaMummy · 17/01/2024 08:53

22ct indian gold necklace worn for over 20 years and still looks good as new.

Meadowfinch · 17/01/2024 09:08

Necklace - Dubai gold shop in about 1996
Earrings - Local independent jeweller
Bracelet - I picked it up off the floor in local supermarket carpark. It's 18 carat gold & lovely, so I put a card on the shop notice board saying I'd found a piece of jewellery and my phone number.

After three weeks of people phoning demanding their wedding ring, engagement ring, necklace etc back, several from the same number but pretending to be different people 😂I gave up, had a new clasp fitted and adopted it. That was a year ago.

The shop know I have it so if the real owner ever asks, they will know where to come.

timetofetgit · 17/01/2024 09:25

silver will oxidise and tarnish quicker on some people than others due to the variation of the ph level on the skin. You can get lacquered silver (anti tarnish silver). Gold will never tarnish its the main reason it's generally preferred for jewellery, is highly sort after and why it comes with such a hefty price tag. 14ct is the best for jewellery as it's not as soft as 18ct, but has a higher purity content than 9ct. 14 Ct/kt isn't used traditionally in the UK though.
Plated silver will eventually go green due to the alloy underneath the plate coming through.
Gold plate, rolled gold or gold filled (different names for the same process) on sterling silver will be less expensive than gold, and more tarnish resistant (until the plating wears off).
Continental silver (approximately 800) has less silver than the British standard of 925 and will tarnish quicker and may go green due to higher mix of the alloy (normally brass or copper, sometimes a mix).
