I wear my engagement ring which is platinum and pearl earrings that are inherited and 100+ years old so I've no idea of the metal but they've never turned my ears green!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/01/2024 15:05

I have a necklace my DH bought me on our first holiday in Gran Canaria 20 odd years ago. The chain broke so had to be replaced but I wear it all the time

mixedpeel · 17/01/2024 18:53

I have this kingfisher necklace which I haven’t taken off since DH gave it to me about three years ago. I appreciate that’s not as long as other posters, however it’s as good as new, so whatever this seller is using for the chain works with my skin chemistry!

I wear a Swarovski necklace that I never take off. No discolouration whatsoever. In the 5 years I’ve had it the only reason it’s been off for a few hours at at time is surgery and MRI scans!

ChristmasTreeMagic · 17/01/2024 20:20

My engagement & wedding rings are 18ct yellow & unplated white gold with diamonds. They were made for me by a master jeweller 20 years ago. They are as pristine as they day I got them. Dh commissioned a yellow gold, diamond & emerald eternity ring from same jeweller for a wedding anniversary & I wear it on my right hand.

I have 3 beautiful necklaces. All yellow gold with gemstones. I alternate them.

I have 3 or 4 other gold rings which I wear on occasion.

I also have an amethyst & seed pearl necklace.

None of my jewelry ever turns my skin green.

SkaneTos · 17/01/2024 21:52

@LadyLolaRuben
Yes, it was a lovely gift, from a lovely neighbour lady!
I did not always wear the necklace during my teenage years, but then I "rediscovered" it among my things when I was in my twenties, and have worn it ever since (I'm in my mid-thirties now). It's extra special to me now, because the neighbour lady passed away a couple of years ago.

WhollyGlorious · 17/01/2024 21:54

I’ve worn a Tiffany necklace every day for 8 years (except for about 2 weeks when it went away for repair) and it’a good as new. It’s a dainty double chain one with a Rubeda (I think) pendant

dlago · 17/01/2024 22:29

Worn my wedding ring for 15 years - just wash my hands
Worn my inherited ear rings for 5 years - take out to clean every so often

mdinbc · 17/01/2024 22:33

OP, do the necklaces go green, or does your skin? It could be the ph level of your body, and a sign that you are low on iron, or (i've heard) eat fewer tomatoes.

If you want silver, look for something rhodium plated.

Alohapotato · 17/01/2024 23:05

A necklace with a small silver cross, gift from my neighbour when I had my confirmation.

I don't know if it's real silver or not, but it does not make my skin green.

Maybe is white gold or platinum.

Alohapotato · 17/01/2024 23:06

I've been wearing a gold tiffany necklace since 2016 ( never took off) and never tarnished.

MrsCharlieD · 17/01/2024 23:08

Tilly Sveaas. Only time it comes off is if I have a spray tan. I shower, swim and sleep in it. I have the curb link bracelet and t-bar necklace.

SkaneTos · 17/01/2024 23:12

@Alohapotato
Yes, perhaps!

Blacknailer · 17/01/2024 23:18

I have proper gold which was inherited or bought, but I also have some jewellery from Orelia Luxe which can be worn in water etc and the plating doesn't wear off. There are a few similar brands. I wear earrings from there constantly and they haven't changed at all.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 17/01/2024 23:24

I have two silver bangles. One from my parents on my 28th & one from my great Aunt.

I have lots of silver, it only tarnishes when I'm not wearing it.

Swirlingsnowflakes · 18/01/2024 00:46

Asian gold ! It's usually 22ct but can be 24. The more intricate designs are 22 though and it's more robust for daily wear. Shower, cook, bathe . Never ever ever will go green . You can also take it to any Asian gold shop and they'll 'wash' it and it will come out like new again.

MotherofAllMatriarchs · 18/01/2024 14:15

Another vote for 9ct gold here. I wear a lot of silver too - mostly bought from Etsy sellers 'Stop the Moon' and 'Kim Ryan Jewellery'.

I also have a beautiful five-diamond ring that I bought from eBay for around £100 that I wear most days stacked with silver and has lasted me years. It's 18 ct gold though so maybe that's not the best idea.

JaceLancs · 18/01/2024 22:10

Gold and mainly 18 carat - I wear my favourite pieces all the time
Every few weeks I change one ring to match my nail polish theme
When I can be bothered I change my earrings - they are the only things that ever need cleaning - not tarnished just hygiene

Voulez23 · 18/01/2024 22:16

Silver doesn't tarnish if you wear it constantly. Solid gold (not plated) won't tarnish either.

I simply don't bother with costume jewellery; just wear the same pieces of silver all the time. They're part of me.

redheadsaregreat · 18/01/2024 22:40

9ct gold has a very low gold content. It is mostly a mixed alloy of copper and silver. Some people have skin with an acid level that causes the copper in the gold to turn skin green. Some people can wear 9ct gold without any issue. If you have sensitivity to some jewellery you may find 9ct gold will cause a reaction as it is made of mostly copper and silver which many people can't wear.

18ct gold is much better for people who react to metals. It also will not tarnish if left I work for long stretches like 9ct gold can.

White gold has a coating of rhodium and this is very interactive. No green skin.

Platinum also. No green skin.

QueenofLouisiana · 18/01/2024 22:57

I have a Calvin klein necklace which I haven’t taken off in years. It’s titanium, silver and rose gold in colour. I turn everything else green or it turns my skin black 🤢

ChristmasTreeMagic · 19/01/2024 07:20

@redheadsaregreat (great user name! Totally agree 😉)
Not all white gold is coated.
My wedding ring is 18ct white gold & 18ct yellow gold. The white gold is uncoated & I absolutely love it. Its 20 years old now & it's as perfect as the day I got it.
Dh's wedding ring is the same & also perfect. I only wear mine when I'm going out. He never takes his off. It's been on his finger for 20 years. No green skin for either of us!

PenCreed · 19/01/2024 14:50

A gold necklace made by Ortak that was my 21st birthday present from my parents. Most of Ortak's stuff these days is silver as I think the original company went under and was resurrected, but it's a lovely bit of jewellery.

Isabelle70 · 20/01/2024 10:01

I have a Tiffany bead bracelet in silver that I never take off and have worn for 3 years with no tarnishing.
I have worn a white gold diamond solitaire pendant and chain for nearly 6 years and that hadn't changed at all.
My diamond platinum birthday present ring to myself only comes off at the weekend if I am gardening or doing diy.

Rocknrollstar · 20/01/2024 10:16

I have a gold pendant I bought off a stall in Jerusalem Bus Station over thirty years ago. Definitely hasn’t gone green and I wear it most days. The jewellery was sold by weight.
Someone once told me her wedding ring set off the alarm when she went through security at the airport and I hadn’t the heart to tell her that gold didn’t set the machine off.
