What's the point of dress pockets?

Basically as the title reads: why do so many people prefer dresses with pockets in them? In my mind, they just make your hips look wider, and if you actually use your pockets to store things in them, you look bumpy and, again, wider than you really are...

Do you prefer dresses with or without pockets, and why?

Pockets are a feminist issue.

I don’t care how wide my hips look. I want to be able to carry shit like men can.

viques · 12/11/2023 10:12

Handy for phones and saves having to stuff tissues up your cardi sleeves.

I don’t use the pockets in my good coats and trousers because it spoils the line, but any other pockets are fair game.

TheDandyLion · 12/11/2023 10:12

To put my hands in them.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/11/2023 10:12

With.

They are definitely a feminist issue.

I bought 17 year old Dd a dress from Cos. It’s not her usual shop. She couldn’t get over the fact it had pockets. It’s her favourite dress. Because it’s got pockets.

Yep, same. I don’t want to have to carry a bag with me everywhere so having a pocket for my phone/wallet/keys is a no-brainer. Even just to keep a tissue in if I need to blow my nose.

Wotsitfappe · 12/11/2023 10:14

God forbid you look bigger and bumpy but have a practical item of clothing.

whiteshutters · 12/11/2023 10:16

I would never put anything in pockets on a dress. I carry too much stuff for that .

HardcoreLadyType · 12/11/2023 10:16

Pockets are useful.

I usually wear dresses for work, and on the days when I am wearing one without pockets, I will waste time looking for wherever I’ve put my phone. If I’m wearing a dress with pockets, it will be in my pocket.

Hip smoothness is just less of a priority to me, than to others, I guess.

Spendonsend · 12/11/2023 10:18

I want to carry my phone, bank card and keys without needing a handbag. Id go as far as saying i want zipped pockets too.

I dont mind looking bumpy or wide.

I mean, if i was weariing a very tight bit of clothing that was designed to showoff my figure on a night out, i might, but thats not the type of dresses i wear.

TheOGCCL · 12/11/2023 10:18

I think putting your hand in a pocket adds an air of insouciance.

Helenahandkart · 12/11/2023 10:19

I love having a pocket to keep my phone in when I’m wandering around the house. Or to keep the pound for my supermarket trolley in when I go to the shops. Or a handkerchief in when I’ve got hay fever. Or put my house keys in when I go for a summer walk. Or put my hands in when I want to look casually confident.
Seriously, have you never used a pocket? Do you carry a handbag with you everywhere you go? Can you really not see why a pocket is a more convenient option in many cases?

BigFatLiar · 12/11/2023 10:19

Definitely prefer pockets. You put things in them especially around the house, who wants to carry a bag around the house.

bingohandjob · 12/11/2023 10:20

You can put stuff in them. I want them deep enough and secure enough to drop my phone, a key, a card in, though - none of those crappy little ones you can barely get your fingers in let alone your hand. And preferably ones that zip up neatly, too.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/11/2023 10:20

I was picking up my son from school in a dress. My friend looked at me and said 'have you forgotten your keys?' because I didn't have a bag. 'No', I said, 'they are in my pocket'.

There endeth the lesson for today.

Exactly this.

Afteropening · 12/11/2023 10:20

I am very slim and I like relaxed fit dressed
So they absolutely do not make my hips look bigger

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/11/2023 10:21

I don’t buy things without pockets. Otherwise where would my phone go?

I refuse to carry a bag. Lippy and phone in pocket and that’s it.

Men wear trousers with pockets
Women wear trousers with pockets

this would be a feminist issue if we were talking about wanting trousers for women with pockets

LividMush · 12/11/2023 10:23

Actually, I have several pairs of trousers without pockets that piss me off every time.

I’ve never ever seen pocket-less man trousers. They wouldn’t stand for it.

Floisme · 12/11/2023 10:24

I've never known a dress with pockets that were any actual, practical use (admittedly I've not worn dresses for a few years).

But what has been a complete revelation has been the discovery of men's suit jackets. Even the cheap ones come with at least 3 inside pockets.

Yeah, but I’ve bought trousers with mock pockets. So just a gap with a button or something and no pocket bags. So they are a feminist issue. They do my fucking head in.

You can bet if men wore dresses they’d have pockets. And coats without pockets need banning.

LividMush · 12/11/2023 10:25

And as a dress is traditionally female clothing, and it’s rare to get dresses with pockets, it is ABSOLUTELY a feminist issue.

Torganer · 12/11/2023 10:26

I have a shopping list on my phone. Can quickly look at it and then put it back in my pocket. I don’t want to have it hold it the whole time or get it in and out of a bag.

Also at work, I am often away from my desk so need my phone. Where do you put it when you need the loo?

Draculina · 12/11/2023 10:27

Okay, it's the first time I have ever heard dress pockets are a feminist issue. I'm not a feminist, so why any woman would want to be or do things like men (which seems like a paradox to me), I will never understand, personally. I can, however, understand the practicalities of pockets...I don't see them as more practical than bags, but I guess they are to many of you! Good to know!

I'm also not saying there's anything wrong with looking wider and bumpy, but you can't deny that it's not the look most people go for. That's all. Just like, "God forbid", you can look as bumpy and wide as you want, there's no shame in NOT wanting that look, either.

I use pockets to put my phone, keys, hankie, hands, etc in. I'm not particularly fussed about how my hips look, I just want some storage space without lugging a bag about.
