What's the point of dress pockets?

Basically as the title reads: why do so many people prefer dresses with pockets in them? In my mind, they just make your hips look wider, and if you actually use your pockets to store things in them, you look bumpy and, again, wider than you really are...

Do you prefer dresses with or without pockets, and why?

I'm always a bit surprised when people (male or female) say they're not a feminist - literally just means you believe in equality of the sexes, and certainly doesn't mean you think women want to be like men.

Well quite. Frankly a woman who isn't a feminist is like a turkey voting for Christmas.

🤣🤣🤣

whiteshutters · 12/11/2023 10:48

@Helenahandkart I never hoover - my H does it 😂but he doesn't wear a dress or sport pockets at the time.

  • Men wear trousers with pockets Women wear trousers with pockets

this would be a feminist issue if we were talking about wanting trousers for women with pockets*

Yeah but look at the difference in pockets!!

I wish women's coats and jackets DID have inside pockets as standard. Remember reading years ago somewhere about someone's poor old Auntie being robbed Christmas shopping and unable to get home, poor soul, but at least an inside pocket would have meant she had her bus pass in there safely so she had a means to get home, bless her.

Storynanny1 · 12/11/2023 10:50

I’m completely with you , I hate pockets and always sew them up so they don’t sag/droop/bulge. I think they also look dreadful on men as well.
But I have a bit of a handbag obsession ….
Only on mumsnet could a thread about dress pockets turn into something “ bigger”

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/11/2023 10:51

This isn’t what l saw. I saw a room full of furious young women and a couple of bemused young men. They want shape AND practicality.

Fair play to them! Doesn't sound unreasonable to me. I just meant that of the women choosing from what's actually available in the shops, some are going to reject clothes with pockets because they find them unflattering and some are going to just say 'Sod flattering, I want pockets!'.

FindingMeno · 12/11/2023 10:52

I mainly use mine for sweeties, so I can furtively stuff my face at work.

NO!

Clothing is anthropology, and reflects societal changes. It is absolutely BIG.

Why do you think women corseted so tightly in the Victorian era?

Why do you think the boyish shape appeared after WW1?

You are so wrong. All clothing is social history.

TodayForTomorrow · 12/11/2023 10:56

I'm not wandering around with my car keys and purse in my pockets all day at work, but i might want to have a pen, or a bit of paper, or my phone or a tampon in my pocket without having to hold it in my hand where it is more likely to get lost.

Always having to have a bag is really annoying.

ADHDat43 · 12/11/2023 10:56

You've befuddled me on two accounts:

  1. Not wanting dresses with pockets

  2. Not understanding the definition of feminism

I love dresses and refuse to buy any without pockets as I don't want to carry a handbag when I go out. Keys in my left pocket, phone in my right - I'm ready to smash the patriarchy face the world Wink

Totaly · 12/11/2023 10:57

DS is aromatic and has zipped pockets for sports etc
DD is asthmatic and does sports with her inhalers in her socks.

Guess who loses the most inhalers?

Unfair?

And I agree with PP, I want practical.

I also want to put my Gaga in my pocket to nip outside at break times.

Asthmatic Fags

Is she asthmatic from smoking all those fags?😂

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 12/11/2023 11:07

Me wedding dress had pockets too! It was a huge game changer.

whiteshutters · 12/11/2023 11:08

@Totaly what is a Gaga?

I mainly use mine for sweeties, so I can furtively stuff my face at work.

When the grandchildren are here they're usually half chewed sweeties which end up covered in fluff or tissue (throw away at your peril, they usually want hhem back to finish fluff and all).

I've threatened DH with a handbag as when we're out I get handed the contents of his pockets, (jacket and trousers) to hold onto. He carries so much around that his trousers have slid down on at least one occasion under the weight.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/11/2023 11:12

I make my own clothes so I always put pockets in dresses even if they're not in the pattern. I don't put heavy stuff in, usually just tissues etc. I wouldn't care if they did make my hips look bigger because I have very narrow hips.

Twosquirrelsdigging · 12/11/2023 11:15

It’s just convenient to have somewhere for a tissue or short term carrying of keys or phone .

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/11/2023 10:36

I could post some photos?

The fact you have a pair of trousers with mock pockets does not mean this is a common occurrence! 😂

museumum · 12/11/2023 11:18

I’m happy to carry a bag when I go out. But for moving around indoors in the office etc I want to carry a couple of small things - tissue, bankcard, keycard. Ideally also my phone but dress pockets aren’t always big enough.

Yeah but look at the difference in pockets!!

You need to show where the crotch begins on those trousers

BigFatLiar · 12/11/2023 11:19

If you don't have your bag with you and you don't have pockets how do you wipe little one noses and hands (no DH that's not what sleeves are for).

I absolutely love social history so get what you are saying - We’ve moved past wearing clothes to fit someone else’s brief though, everyone is different. I personally hate pockets, it’s got nothing to do with what shape it turns my body into!
I do have a kitchen apron with pockets in….
Useful for absolutely nothing!

DuesToTheDirt · 12/11/2023 11:23

Even in a lightweight dress pockets are handy for a tissue or for carrying a tampon to the loo at work without taking a bag or sneaking it up your sleeve.

NotAHoot · 12/11/2023 11:24

I try not to take a handbag out. I don't coo over handbags and see them as a vessel for my stuff. It's annoying when I don't have pockets. There are womens trousers which don't have them too. It isn't just dresses and skirts. Also, as has already been said, mens trouser pockets are a lot bigger and more useful than womens.

I prioritise being comfortable (not carrying an unnecessary item like a handbag) over looking wide. Couldn't care less if my hips look wide - they are wide 🤷‍♀️. I've had two kids and am a woman. They're going to be wide whatever I wear
