What's the point of dress pockets?

Draculina · 12/11/2023 10:09

Basically as the title reads: why do so many people prefer dresses with pockets in them? In my mind, they just make your hips look wider, and if you actually use your pockets to store things in them, you look bumpy and, again, wider than you really are...

Do you prefer dresses with or without pockets, and why?

It is possible to be FOR equality of sexes, but NOT feminism, you know.

Actually no, equality of the sexes is the definition of feminism.....

JassyRadlett · 12/11/2023 12:18

No, the fact that it's something that many of us experience regularly is what makes it a common occurrence.

and as this very thread shows

if it is indeed a “common occurrence” it is because there is a market demand for it

Feminism does NOT hold monopoly on integrity and values. You CAN absolutely be for equality of sexes, but against Feminism. Again, no one has the authority to decide for another person what they can and cannot be for and against. I'm for equality of sexes, but I am definitely against Feminism, the cult whose members are trying to dictate to me what I can and cannot be.

Well, I’m not Shakira, so the shape and texture of my hips doesn’t affect my life in any way. Besides, who goes round judging people for their hips? Pockets are stylish, practical, comfortable, keep your hands warm, make it less likely that your stuff gets stolen. I’d be happy to campaign for more and deeper pockets if anything.

adriftinadenofvipers · 12/11/2023 16:17

I ADORE dresses with pockets!! Just even to put my hands in!

Try them @Draculina - you will be converted lol!

It's not about other people and their judgements, though, it's about feeling good in what you wear, YOURSELF. Can you honestly tell me women, generally, want to look wider than they are? That women tend to feel good about looking bigger than they are?

Haha, I actually have two maxi dresses with pockets - I never use the pockets! They just annoy me, really 😁.

You can bet if men wore dresses they’d have pockets

Oh this is daft.

Some dresses have pockets
Some do not have pockets

Some women like dresses with pockets
Some women do not like dresses with pockets

SPORRANS! They have a front pockets, a knife, everything.

And OP, I'm not a feminist, so why any woman would want to be or do things like men (which seems like a paradox to me), I will never understand, personally. If you are going to decide not to be a feminist, please at least try to understand what it is before rejecting it.

'Being like a man' is not feminism.

Pockets are a feminist issue.

I don’t care how wide my hips look. I want to be able to carry shit like men can.

This. Exactly.

SpareHeirOverThere · 12/11/2023 16:21

Poor OP. No pockets and no feminism. How much happier you'd be with both!

I'm genuinely curious about what you're definitely against about feminism.

There are lots of variations in thought amongst women who call themselves feminists. It's not possible to agree with all of them as some are the exact opposite of each other e.g. some think prostitution is empowering for women and girls others think it's exploitation and abuse.

The commonality is believing in equality of the sexes and I don't understand how any woman is against that.

JustKen · 12/11/2023 16:27

I don't tend to wear dresses but I like jeans with big pockets. I have some old Mom jeans that are past their best but I refuse to bin them because the pockets are BIG.

I do tend to take a small handbag out with me but when I'm indoors the practical nature of having a large pocket for a tissue and my phone cannot be underestimated.

aswarmofmidges · 12/11/2023 16:29

I thought Feminism is about equality of the sexes

What else do people think it's about that they are against ?

Feminism on mumsnet is just about arguing and tit for tat. Always makes me feel embarrassed to call myself a feminist.

Then I leave mumsnet and re enter RL, and realise it’s thankfully not generally like that

Saffrom · 12/11/2023 16:34

Ah, OP, you’re one of THOSE women. The ones who dress to please men and do it so automatically you can now no longer comprehend any ither way of thinking.

I wear clothes with pockets so that I can put things in them. Just like a farmer doesn’t wear wellies because they look hot to his wife.

aswarmofmidges · 12/11/2023 16:35

Feminism and equality would imply that there may not be quite sone many differences between men and women

When people talk about "just like a man "

Having the opportunity like a man - the opportunity to play golf not do the cleaning and mind the kids , get paid the same for the same job, do the same job if capable , having opinions respected irrespective of age and looks

Being judged like men are judged - on ability first not looks

I don't think it means women have to have short hair and hairy legs - but they shouldn't be judged lesser if they do

Depends who you are talking to. I'd define feminism as the attempt to free women from the patriarchy.

'Equality' doesn't work because you could invent a world where no one had access to abortion, good maternity healthcare, there weren't DV shelters and period resources were taxed 100%. Men's lives would be fine, women's lives would be shit, but it would technically be 'equal'. Because no one would have those resources. I mean if you pay every cleaner and care worker terribly and every bin collector and every factory worker really well, it;s technically equal if you ignore who does what job. That's how we get around equal pay laws.

That's why it's hard work.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 12/11/2023 16:59

Carrying a handbag is annoying. I want to be able to stick my phone and keys in my pocket and just go about my day. I can see the feminist side for sure, its a freedom to be able to just walk out the door. Men get up, get dressed, put their phone, keys and money in their pocket and they are good for whatever the day will throw at them.

aswarmofmidges · 12/11/2023 17:15

I wouldn't see that as equal because it would not be equal - women would have more expense and less opportunity so it isn't equal ?

Sorry but if an aside from pockets

Although a perfect example of "more expense" as pockets are a lot cheaper than a handbag

Pumpkintastic · 12/11/2023 17:17

See I don't like buying dresses without pockets.....each to heir own I guess. I like them so I can stick my hands in them, or carry stuff. They're just practical, and I think they look good.

Storynanny1 · 12/11/2023 17:21

Re the pocket v handbag
How do you fit everything in one or two pockets? I have a purse, phone, reading glasses, inhaler, tissues, bunch of keys in mine at the moment.
If we are out for a walk I’ll leave it in the car and put a tissue in my coat pocket and an inhaler, DH has a wallet and the car keys in his coat pockets but daily out and about I couldn’t do without a bag! And that’s without children with me all the time.
Not criticising just interested.

Storynanny1 · 12/11/2023 17:22

Oh forgot a lipstick

which I wear to please myself not a man

AFieldGuideToTrees · 12/11/2023 17:22

That's how we get around equal pay laws.

And now why more and more councils are in huge legl pay disputes with female care staff.
