What's the point of dress pockets?

Basically as the title reads: why do so many people prefer dresses with pockets in them? In my mind, they just make your hips look wider, and if you actually use your pockets to store things in them, you look bumpy and, again, wider than you really are...

Do you prefer dresses with or without pockets, and why?

No, I was making a specific comment on your statement about market forces. HTH.

It doesn’t

this thread shows there are women who very very much do not want pockets on their dresses.

high dress designers, many of whom are women, respond to that demand. Hence there being dresses with and without pockets .

Ballsbaill · 13/11/2023 08:28

The kind of pockets you get on many dresses wouldn't be deep enough of safe for a wallet or phone etc.

I do care about my appearance and don't want to look wider than I am either. But it's anathema on here to say that in style and beauty of all places which is all about appearance: the clue is in the name.

I'm always a bit surprised when people (male or female) say they're not a feminist - literally just means you believe in equality of the sexes, and certainly doesn't mean you think women want to be like men.

Well quite. Frankly a woman who isn't a feminist is like a turkey voting for Christmas.

Being a MRA would be a turkey voting for Xmas.

Pockets for dresses are a no from me, unless the style is casual and summery.

whiteshutters · 13/11/2023 08:34

I just googled "dresses with pockets" and the first two were Popsy and whispering Joanie 🤗

aswarmofmidges · 13/11/2023 08:38

Just perhaps some people believe it's isn't truely stylish or beautiful if it's impractical

LOVE a pocket. In any item of clothing.

I think the inside pocket of a jacket is a real no brainer. I go up to London with dp. He keeps his ticket in the inside pocket of his jacket designed for just such an eventuality. I have to unzip bag, retrieve from purse / inside pocket, rezip bag then do the same in reverse when I’ve finished with it. What a faff. DP doesn’t even break his stride.

You could avoid that by using something like a Radley pocket bag which has a zipped exterior pocket. It's actually handier and more secure than strong a ticket in an inside jacket pocket. I always use that on the underground.

I love dresses with pockets - wouldn't buy one which didn't have them, but it's for reading glasses, tissues, sticking my hands in my pockets- not security. A cross body zipped bag is more secure than pockets.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/11/2023 09:11

It’ll be a cold day in hell when I wear a cross body bag with a zipped exterior pocket I’m afraid 😬 I’d rather have an inside breast pocket on my jacket for tickets thanks.

Up to you - I've noticed that when I'm on the underground with my husband it's me who gets through ticket barriers more quickly.

An inside pocket in a jacket isn't particularly handy if you've got a raincoat or overcoat on top.

My own view is I love pockets for glasses, tissues , little things , etc but that the benefits of pockets are widely overstated, especially when it comes to security. I hate seeing phones and credit cards obviously stuffed into back pockets of jeans - you (general you) are kidding yourself if you think that's more secure than a zipped bag.

It also ignores the fact many men carry bags. Why would that be if pockets are supposed to be the answer to everything?

Nutellaonall · 13/11/2023 09:29

Like pockets in my hoody and cargo trousers. Don’t like anywhere near the bum hip area. That’s just uncomfortable !

Givemeadresswithpockets · 13/11/2023 11:28

To those who think pockets are somehow manly and that women shouldn't have them because it emulates what men do and that is bad for some reason, are you aware that women used to have massive pockets attached to their dresses? They could fit a book or a loaf of bread.

A question for the pocket enthusiasts in this thread: where can dresses with pockets sturdy enough for a phone and keys be found today? Aside from Cos, as was already mentioned.

Did anyone, anyone, say that pockets were “manly”? Or even allude to thinking this?

Nope

snygghygge · 12/11/2023 12:21

I am a feminist and I absolutely HATE pockets! I wish they would just go away and die on the hill that teaches girls the only way to equality between the sexes is through emulating boys and men. I always wear dresses and I really wish I didn't have to spend precious free time sewing un superfluous pockets every time I buy a new item of clothing.

So how do you interprete this comment, Afteropening?
To me it suggests that pockets are seen as a manly thing by the poster.

CuboidsAndSpheres · 13/11/2023 12:04

There's no indication of 'manliness' anywhere in that comment?

StarlightLady · 13/11/2023 13:26

Most dresses which do have pockets have extremely shallow ones. So I woulkd say the purpose is to lose your belongings.

zero mention of pockets being “manly” and that they are trying to emulate what men do.

not even a whiff

it is a poster declaring her hatred of pockets and another, different hatred of hers is any teaching that equality must mean girls emulating boys

Do you see this now?

SukeDamson · 13/11/2023 13:34

All the posters who think men have it better, pocketwise, why are so many young and younger men carrying bags now?

There's an assumption that something exclusively for women, e.g handbags, is inherently worse than something for men. On security I don't think stuffing things in pockets is as secure as a zipped, cross body bag. I'd love to know the statistics for lost and stolen phones and wallets from pockets and secure bags.

I love pockets on dresses but they don't replace bags.

aswarmofmidges · 13/11/2023 13:40

None round these parts !

Although I have noticed increasing pressure / adverts aimed at men selling none essential stuff like perfumes and skin care - guess the female market is saturated

Loads of men carrying bags where I live. My son takes a satchel type bag everywhere.

SpamFritterSandwich · 13/11/2023 13:52

Wait, what. You don't believe in equality between men and women?

Really?

It makes me cringe when I see people with their phone or wallet sticking out of their jeans pocket.

Clothing for in the home needs pockets. This includes pyjama trousers. Clothing for the walking my dog needs pockets . Anything else, I'm with you on the small cross-body bag.

The only dress with pockets that I have is this one: https://hanah.co.uk/products/ruby-maxi-dress-floral and I LOVE it
I got them in 2 colours
You cannot really see that they are there, the fabric is flowy and good quality- but at the same its great to hide tissues, keys even phone when need to go to the shop quickly!

I always avoid pockets in skirts- as they make hips wider
I guess that depends on the style

I bought my last dress for a wedding mainly because it had pockets and I could keep hankies, polos, a comb, train tickets and a phone in them! (Seasalt if anyone is looking)

whiteshutters · 13/11/2023 19:45

What do you all do with all these tissues?😂

Lovely dress
I would buy a dress like that (but still wouldn’t ever put anything in the pockets!)
