What's the point of dress pockets?

Basically as the title reads: why do so many people prefer dresses with pockets in them? In my mind, they just make your hips look wider, and if you actually use your pockets to store things in them, you look bumpy and, again, wider than you really are...

Do you prefer dresses with or without pockets, and why?

I absolutely love social history so get what you are saying - We’ve moved past wearing clothes to fit someone else’s brief though, everyone is different. I personally hate pockets, it’s got nothing to do with what shape it turns my body into!
I do have a kitchen apron with pockets in….
Useful for absolutely nothing!

But even that about not dressing to someone else’s brief is part of it.

The fact you have a pair of trousers with mock pockets does not mean this is a common occurrence! 😂

It’s more than one though. I’ve found it quite often.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/11/2023 11:27

I hate them. They ruin the lines of dresses - I’ve already got lumps and bumps enough of my own.

I even have a pair of otherwise lovely PJs with pockets.

EATmum · 12/11/2023 11:27

Like Captain, part of the reason I make my own clothes is so I can put pockets in everything. It's an absolute joy (and trust me, amongst women who sew, pockets are a huge passion!)

What I’d be more interested in

is a picture of all your trouser with pockets

and all your trousers with mock pockets.

all my jeans, whether skinny or relaxed fit have pockets. All my smart trousers have pockets. All my casual summer harem style trousers have pockets

my leggings do not have pockets

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/11/2023 11:29

And I’ve never met a dress pocket that is any use anyway. Too flimsy to safely hold keys or phone.

Afteropening · 12/11/2023 11:30

As is clear from this very thread

it is brilliant that some dresses are offered without pockets because some women love them without

and great that some dresses are offered with pockets because some women love them with

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/11/2023 11:31

They were work trousers mainly. Mainly from high street as lm not wasting money on trpusers for classrooms

Ivr never found it in trousers from Cos or M and S, or Arket.

Lots of it in New Look or Next

bingohandjob · 12/11/2023 11:34

I love internal zipped pockets on my coats (Didriksons great for this) and I love dungarees and pinafore/dungaree dresses that have a front chest pocket - brilliant for my phone. Rohan are good for proper sized pockets on trousers and some of their dresses.

Personally, I think if you're a woman and you think you and other women and girls deserve equal access on a par with men with regards to eg equal pay and conditions for roles of equal demands, legal rights, education, healthcare, bodily autonomy etc, you're a feminist. 🤷‍♀️

Rainbowshit · 12/11/2023 11:35

I like pockets in dresses as otherwise I end up with my phone shoved in my bra.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/11/2023 11:56

COS dresses usually have practical deep pockets, it's one of the main reasons I buy their dresses. Hush on the other hand usually don't have pockets and when I found one that did it wasn't deep enough and my phone kept falling out.

My most annoying pair of trousers ever were from Gap, I had 2 pairs in the same design for work, one blue (which had functional pockets) and one black (with fake pockets). Why?

Women's clothes are generally made more cheaply and cost more money than men's clothes. I once bought a (leather) belt from the mens section in a Tesco because it was cheaper than the (plastic) belts in the woman's section. Girl's hoodies in Next are made of thinner material than their boy's hoodies, guess which I bought for my DDs.

Absolutely. I can’t be bothered getting into a deep discussion! I don’t like dresses with pockets and I love handbags. My sister loves pockets on everything and hates handbags. We are both confident free spirited nannies who dress to please ourselves.
Everyone is different.

tiredandolderthanithought · 12/11/2023 12:11

@Afteropening it depends what you pay. My matalan jeans don't have pockets, I also have jeans from Tesco and sainsbury that don't have pockets.
My fat face jeans do have pockets.

It's also a question of economy.

I'd say only 30% of my trousers have pockets

Perfect28 · 12/11/2023 12:15

I prefer clothes that are functional. As pp said, I don't give a shit how my hips look, I care about being able to carry stuff.

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/11/2023 12:16

I don't like any clothes without pockets, I don't care if it makes my hips look wide (so what?).

I don't like carrying bags anymore, I have almost nothing to carry. A phone, a small bifold wallet, keys and a lip balm. I put them all in my pockets, like men do.

I also feel much more comfortable if I can put my hands in nice, big pockets.

theveryhungrybum · 12/11/2023 12:17

If I buy a dress without pockets, I take it to a dressmaker to have pockets put in. It drives me nuts not having pockets! I put my hands in them, put stuff in them, just like to have them available. I can go out of the house with just my phone and a car key...but I need to carry a bag if I don't have pockets. So annoying!

No, the fact that it's something that many of us experience regularly is what makes it a common occurrence.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/11/2023 12:19

I have some great sports leggings with big pockets on the thighs. They obviously lie flat to the leg when empty, as they are tight stretchy material. Good for dog poo bags. Not so comfy for a big bunch of keys!

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 12/11/2023 12:20

Dresses with pockets. For keys and phone. Cba carrying a bag most of the time.

truetruebarneymcgrew · 12/11/2023 12:21

Because I hate handbags. Because I only have a phone. I suppose I could shove my phone down my bra, if I want to be hands free, but a pocket is much easier.

snygghygge · 12/11/2023 12:21

I am a feminist and I absolutely HATE pockets! I wish they would just go away and die on the hill that teaches girls the only way to equality between the sexes is through emulating boys and men. I always wear dresses and I really wish I didn't have to spend precious free time sewing un superfluous pockets every time I buy a new item of clothing.

MidnightOnceMore · 12/11/2023 12:26

WTF re: I'm not a feminist, so why any woman would want to be or do things like men (which seems like a paradox to me), I will never understand, personally.

Pfft.

I like pockets. I like equality. It is fuck all to do with being like men.

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/11/2023 12:26

It's not about emulating men, it's about having somewhere practical to put your stuff. It's a feminist issue because that's the default for men's clothing. To the extent that even their bloody swimming shorts have pockets.

aswarmofmidges · 12/11/2023 12:35

Funny I have never heard of men sewing up pockets to ensure they look good

The whole concept of needing to look good and the whole definition of what looks good is so tied up with sexism and the treatment of women as ornaments first
