I can't do this alone folks. I've got TOO MUCH STUFF... I also have 2 beauty advent calendars

So I've set myself a challenge. Between now and June the 1st 2024 I will not buy any beauty products UNLESS I've run out of all of that particular type. If I've got a tiny sample bottle of shampoo or conditioner I'll use it all up. All those half used bottles of moisturiser, night cream, shower gel and toner and body lotion MUST GO... the mountain of soap must be surmounted.

My only concession is that I will not cancel the Liberty Beauty drop will get a couple of boxes to cheer me up

So if you want to join me make up your own rules and lets cull that stash

I'm in, planning to make no makeup or skincare purchases for as long as possible except for replacing things I need. So I'm unlikely to buy much eyeshadow, lipstick, body lotion or highlighter as I have loads to use up. I will need a few bits including mascara though.

Four last skincare empties for the year:- Hada Labo Shirojyun Premium Whitening Cream. Maaaaahvellous stuff. Not rebuying because I have a full lotion in the same range that is even more effective. Curel Foaming Face Wash. pretty much a staple. Lasts forever and cleans effectively without leaving my skin dry, stripped or sensitive. I had another in backup. Some By Mi Retinol Intense Advanced Triple Action Eye Cream - nice but the Beauty of Joseon one is more effective. I have been using it up as a neck & dec. cream. Body Garden Orange and Muguet body lotion. I have another. Lush.
Makeup - Coringco Shalala Snowball in Rose’s Wizard. Love. Same one in Ferris Wheel too. Also lovely but quite an orangey coral. I have been wearing them at work. Won’t rebuy simply because I have far too many lipglosses and balms to use up. A bit more intense than I anticipated. Canmake Milk Chocolate Mascara. It was okay, but a weird brown: Glad it’s gone.
Lador LPP shampoo and treatment. Okay, but not amazing. Had to use a lot to get hair clean. Feel like my hair needs rich, creamy shampoo and a lighter treatment. I have different shampoo from my stash that I wasn’t expecting to like. It’s fabulous and smells divine. Also the last of an open bottle of TG (Tigi) Purple Shampoo. Fab but drying. I am using a Redken one that I won last year in a raffle. It’s much stronger and less stripping.

@listsandbudgets , I ordered perfume sample sets online from Harvey Nichols. Each box had either 5 or 7 spray samples. Brands were Aerin, Hermetica, Kilian and Memo. I separated them into potential spring /summer and autumn/winter. I plan to start testing them next week so will update here, but I don't want to enable anyone! An acquaintance recommended The Perfume Society for sample sets also, so I may try them if I have no joy from any of the Harvey Nichols ones.

Today I started to properly declutter my stash. I do not need to buy anything for several months, except a new fragrance. I need some discipline!

CorneliaStreet · 27/12/2023 18:24

@EuniceLopril I’ve had a few mixed sample boxes from the Perfume Society. They usually have a good mix of types of fragrances and lots of good niche brands, mixed with some more mainstream stuff. They do a seasonal box quarterly too.

After my early fail (3rd), I've come to report no further lapses. I'm going for a ban on beauty, toiletries and candles till end of September.

My stash did not increase too much from Christmas presents - just just some Epsom balt salts and an Acqua di Parma cologne. Both very welcome.

Was a good Christmas gift-wise. Some food & drink presents with a lovely pair of PJs bottoms thrown in. Nice things but not overly excessive.

FiveShelties · 01/01/2024 05:45

I had a few things for Christmas but have not purchased anything myself. I am aiming to not buy anything which I do not need this year.

narniabusiness · 01/01/2024 08:19

I’ve managed not to buy anything in the sales beauty wise. I had a bit of a browse on line but managed to talk myself out of it because I already have enough stuff.
Hope you are all managing to stick to your goals too. Happy New Year 🥳

Cyclingmummy1 · 01/01/2024 09:25

I've cancelled my candle subscription - I've got a cupboard full - and I'm pretty well stocked after my advent calendar.

SwordBilledHummingbird · 01/01/2024 09:27

I finally figured out some of the reasons I've built up a huge stash:

  1. I tend to buy things before I really need them, ie. I notice I'm getting low on moisturiser but I then rebuy straight away rather than waiting until I actually need it.

  2. I tend to buy items I need that are in beauty boxes or with GWPs. Which means that I get the item I need but also a ton of other stuff that I don't.

Number 1 is easy to remedy but 2 is trickier as there are genuine bargains and it seems ridiculous to spend more to get less.

Peridot1 · 01/01/2024 09:38

Happy New Year all.

my stash didn’t increase too much over Christmas. Five new items in total. Two of them are travel sizes.

I have deliberately not looked at any sales. And walked past SpaceNK yesterday without even being tempted to go in.

Need to do a stocktake so I know exactly what I have.

Not buying anything unless it’s needed. No kits or GWPs this year.

And a concerted effort to use up face masks and body lotions. I have loads of both and am not great at using them.

Number 2 on your list is the one that I tend to do. I did give away a couple of things as stocking fillers but I still have plenty left.

Puravida23 · 01/01/2024 15:16

I am also guilty of number 2 the knack is to not put the unwanted items in your stash but give away or sell immediately. I am only just learning this . During advent season I actively gave away stuff I knew I wouldn’t use and the remaining stuff if any value I will sell on Vinted/ebay in the coming weeks (this is the tricky bit as I am a natural procrastinator) . Otherwise I will try and repurpose somehow. For me this is day 1 of my beauty ban I am looking forward to a healthier bank balance and clear shelves in 2024 as well as discovering all my beauty products which I desperately wanted at the time of purchase but then have never used

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 01/01/2024 17:46

@Puravida23 that’s a lovely resolution. I have avoided any purchases so far but I love a bargain. Any tips on selling things on Ebay? I have always wanted to sell stuff but procrastinate a lot too.

FayCarew · 01/01/2024 17:57

@Thereislightattheendofthetunnel , just list it.

greengreengrass25 · 01/01/2024 18:07

I find it really hard to use up make up.

I've sorted out a bag to try to use up things first

I have so much it's overwhelming

greengreengrass25 · 01/01/2024 18:07

I didn't do an advent calendar this year which has helped

me too and I end up using things I'm not keen on
The expensive stuff seems to go off more quickly especially mascara

greengreengrass25 · 01/01/2024 18:14

Yes I don't like some of the stuff

I do regularly replace mascaras but the eyeliners seem to linger and eyeshadows

I have so many lip colours

I have loads of lipsticks. However, dd, when "borrowing" my make up complains that they are nearly all pretty much the same colour.

I guess I know what suits me 😁

To be honest, I don't even count make-up as part of my stash as it would just be depressing to count. The two advent calendars didn't help either.

Puravida23 · 01/01/2024 19:45

I don’t count Make up either. certain things like blushers and eyeshadows last for ever.
@Thereislightattheendofthetunnel The hardest thing for me is just getting around to listing on eBay. They make it pretty easy usually you can just use an old listing template for the item if it is pretty common and they have data which shows how much the same item has sold for in the last 90 days and recommend what price to use I just then add my own photos . I usually do auction at the lowest price I am comfortable selling for. But a lot of people do buy it now. I also have a look at existing listings to see what everyone else is selling for. I have only sold a few items but never had a problem
i think Vinted is similar but never used it

Fraaahnces · 04/01/2024 12:24

I have been filling online shopping carts and then editing them to rule out things in a similar genre in my stash. Anything that is left over in the shopping cart, I have added to a new bank account. If I really, really want something makeup or skincare-related, I will buy it for my birthday (July). Otherwise, while clearing out my clothes, I realised I need some brown boots. Will save up for some of them.

QueefofSheena · 04/01/2024 18:09

I did a quick sweep of bits I know I'll need, like SPF and ordered before the NY deadline. I have BD credit and Liberty vouchers so if a perfume kit should miraculously appear I can get it without further spending.

narniabusiness · 04/01/2024 18:12

I have not bought anything. I even did a Boots order for toothpaste and deodorant and everyday stuff like that. I browsed the Christmas gift set leftovers and I did not buy a thing. (Shines halo)

listsandbudgets · 08/01/2024 13:06

Hello everyone sorry I've been quiet real life got in the way but the good news is that beauty product buying did not. I've not bought so much as a tube of toothpaste or a bottle of conditioner since I started this in early November. I'm now walking past Superdrugs, Boots, certain aisle in the supermarket

That said there is the little matter of 2 advent calandars so I'm extremely well stocked up with some things - for example I don't think I'll be buying a night cream or oil for a very long time to come.

In the end left all the nivea products at my mums.

My aim for the next few weeks is to use only shower gels that are less than a quarter full - I think I've got 7 of them!! The bottles take up quite a bit of space and I've got plenty more full ones in the cupboard
