Mary Jane shoes ...anyone else think they look awful?

Just that. I think they look like children's shoes and everyone seems to be wearing them in magazines because they are wearing "what's in fashion" ...infantalising.

I love them flat for work with black tights.
DD16 wears patent block heel ones to 6th form and looks amazing.

Shodan · 20/10/2023 15:28

The flat ones always look like the shoes I was made to wear as a child, through to teens. If they're the plain ones they look like the school shoes I had to wear and if they're 'fancy' ones they look like the party shoes I had. Consequently I am not keen on the flats.

But the high heeled ones- well like other PPs they're the only ones that will stay on my feet. Stilettoes without some kind of strap are accompanied by mutterings of " Fuck sake fucking shoes stay on my fucking feet goddammit I hate you so much" which is less attractive than the strap, imo.

I don't love the way they look - they're annoying because they're not actually that practical/comfortable- thin soles, can't really wear socks with them.

But they're also not very pleasing on the eye (imho)

What? What? What? Grin

Actual heaven in shoe form. 😍

I didn't know they were in fashion but I've always preferred shoes with straps, they are much more comfortable, and I love 1930s heels.

littlegrebe · 20/10/2023 15:39

They look awful on me because they don't go with the sort of clothes I like to wear, but I've seen others wear them really well. If we all wore the same stuff the world would be pretty boring.

Whoevenlikestomatoes · 20/10/2023 15:43

That look good for some styles but I could never pull it off!

FluffActually · 20/10/2023 15:43

Love them, but they're not what children wear where I'm from so I don't share those associations.
TIL people still read magazines to learn what's in fashion!

Ilikeyourdecor · 20/10/2023 15:45

Varies so much. I like high heeled ones and can't keep slip-ons on my feet so the strap is required. I don't like flat ones that look like children's shoes. They make my feet look enormous.

KnittedCardi · 20/10/2023 15:58

Love them. Very Downton Abbey 😊

sonsmum · 20/10/2023 16:07

I love all Mary Janes, flats or slight heels (not overly keen on higher heels). They are smart, comfy, nice room for the toes, stay on your feet unlike slip-ons and are less clumpy than boots.

VelvetUndergrounds · 20/10/2023 16:10

I love them but they go with my sense of style!

IncompleteSenten · 20/10/2023 16:14

Yes they do look just like the school shoes I had when I was a kid but I bet they're more comfy than the ones that squeeze your toes and give you bunions.

Pudmyboy · 20/10/2023 16:16

I love them as I have quite large feet and they look dainty on me. I have a gold pair from Oliver Bonas which I loved so much I bought a range of MJs in nude, black patent (love a bit of patent leather), white and a rose gold just because. So obviously I am a fan!
Can't wear high heels and to me high heels are a way of restricting wearers as it's hard to walk run or even stand in the darn things. But each to their own, there's lots of choices for all

FourStringsNoWaiting · 20/10/2023 16:17

I absolutely love them but it probably helps that I knit my own socks and Mary Janes show them off nicely, in fact I once knitted a pair of socks which the designer specifically intended to be worn with Mary Janes. It has a cat design which shows though the gap iyswim

Today I learned what that acronym means!

But you raise an interesting point, @FluffActually … It’s only lately (and only through MN) that I’ve begun to comprehend the impoverishment of visual culture that’s now seriously afflicting any conversation on fashion and style. It seems to be the case that the majority of MN posters are not accustomed to interpreting stylised editorial photographs of clothes - Tim Walker / Sarah Moon / everything ever between the covers of Vogue. Influencers’ instagrammed ‘mirror reflection selfies’ seem to have stolen people’s brains. So if anyone posts a picture on S&B of, say, a dress, styled with an enormous bow and silly shoes, the whole thread erupts in outraged fury and scorn and vituperative name-calling because they think they would have to wear the whole picture.

I never thought I’d feel too old for this board - but …

Ooh they sound nice! Do you have a pic to share?

FourStringsNoWaiting · 20/10/2023 16:25

This is the designer's photo, mine are not this well-made 😄

Lovely

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/10/2023 16:29

A million times better than a ballet shoe.
I cannot abide ballet flats but that my opinion . Other people love them

piscofrisco · 20/10/2023 16:30

I like 'em!

Citrusandginger · 20/10/2023 16:31

I'm in the loathe them camp. Visually cutting my foot in half with a strap to make my short legs appear even shorter is a very bad idea.

Coffeepot72 · 20/10/2023 16:33

They’re not my favourite item but I need a shoe with a strap

coxesorangepippin · 20/10/2023 16:34

Hate the name too

coxesorangepippin · 20/10/2023 16:35

The heel on those linked above looks like it'll snap
