Mary Jane shoes ...anyone else think they look awful?

Just that. I think they look like children's shoes and everyone seems to be wearing them in magazines because they are wearing "what's in fashion" ...infantalising.

I occasionally like them on other people, depending on the style, but wouldn't wear them myself. I have big, ungainly feet with a high instep and I think they generally look better on smaller feet. Any straps tend to dig in, so I look as though I'm still wearing the shoes for an hour after I take them off😆

Doyouthinktheyknow · 21/10/2023 09:05

I love them. I’ve got narrow feet and love loafers but can’t keep them on. Mary Jane shoes do stay put.

I also love in brightly coloured DM boots in winter and birkies in summer so my style has always been a bit dodgy!

nancypowers1983 · 21/10/2023 09:06

@AllWeWantToDo they did quite a while ago, I don't generally wear them cos they are very childish. I bought them purely for the nostalgia but I was cold and having such a miserable day yesterday so putting them on knowing nobody else could see them made me smile Smile

I recently ordered these ever so slightly edgy Mary Janes from Cos.

They may well look lovely on you, but they make the model's feet look like boats.

Heels may come back into fashion but they will never look good.

However many people wear them, whoever they are, however expensive the shoes are - heels always look rubbish. IMO.

I think a heel elongates the leg and has an elegant sexy vibe, particularly with dresses and evening wear.

I have small very narrow feet and love Mary Janes. I ordered two pairs today as reading this thread made me realise just how much I miss having a pair… or two!

WalkingOnSunshineYeahhhh · 21/10/2023 18:19

Agreed. In particular, the low heeled ones are so unflattering and frumpy looking.

Petrine · 21/10/2023 18:20

@FOTTFSOFTFOASM

‘They may well look lovely on you, but they make the model's feet look like boats.’

i agree. I do think that the model has been given a pair far too large though. Surely they’re not supposed to look like that?

I often see ill fitting shoes being modelled - they look ridiculous. You’d think they’d want to present the items in the best way possible… obviously not

alrighthen · 21/10/2023 20:29

Haha @FOTTFSOFTFOASM The model is probably 6’2 and stunningly gorgeous so I’m glad there’s at least something that looks better on me than her!

The shoes are nice in real life (arrived today) and not too clown like in the right size. I’ll probably keep them.

Ididntknowuntiliknew · 21/10/2023 20:51

I'm a massive shoe hoarder.
I bought a pair of these once, and gifted them to my MIL.
They aren't for me, but don't offend me.

Princessfluffy · 22/10/2023 06:37

I love Mary Janes and despise high heels, I don't think they look remotely sexy, just like the wearer is an unthinking victim of the patriarchy 🤷‍♀️

Why wear shoes which are uncomfortable, bad for your body and you cannot run away easily if you had to? I'm glad they are no longer virtually compulsory for women. My dd wouldn't even think to wear them.

Ringadinga · 22/10/2023 07:29

Yes, Mary Jane's may be considered ugly by some but high heels are bad for you. How someone can be judgemental on MJ wearers while tottering around on shoes that place appearance over back, muscle and foot health ...

doingmyboxin · 14/06/2024 09:54

Thoughts on these? For wearing with cropped jeans.

henlake7 · 14/06/2024 10:06

I like them @doingmyboxin I think they are a nice style option and wearable with lots of styles. Although I do like those shoes mainly for the wide looking fit and round toebox so they look like they would be good for your feet (I like barefoot shoes for the same reason but if your feet are larger they can also make you look like you have flippers for feet!LOL).

So yes to mary janes.....but not for me coz I have fat ankles!😄

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 14/06/2024 11:02

Just another style of shoes and there are many types of footwear that I think are plain ugly and seriously unflattering, let alone impossible to walk in, but each to their own. It is a style I've always liked and it comes in so many forms, that unlikely that all will suit all types of feet, but it suits my short toe / wide feet and yesterday I had a red velvet pair on, getting a number of nice comments. I think footwear is often a marmite thing, you like it or you don't, but I am enjoying the variety of textures and finishes that the new incarnations of the style are coming in, so definitely not looking like a child's shoe on me and I often think that shoes are like jewellery, where they can enhance an outfit and put a smile on your face (especially if they are comfortable to wear), so disagree with your view, but you are entitled to it

sparkleowl · 14/06/2024 11:09

Shodan · 20/10/2023 15:28

The flat ones always look like the shoes I was made to wear as a child, through to teens. If they're the plain ones they look like the school shoes I had to wear and if they're 'fancy' ones they look like the party shoes I had. Consequently I am not keen on the flats.

But the high heeled ones- well like other PPs they're the only ones that will stay on my feet. Stilettoes without some kind of strap are accompanied by mutterings of " Fuck sake fucking shoes stay on my fucking feet goddammit I hate you so much" which is less attractive than the strap, imo.

Are you my twin sister?😂😂😂😂

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/06/2024 15:48

I don't like them.

Yes, Mary Jane shoes are definitely for children, not for an elegant, sophisticated lady.

Lozenge007 · 08/06/2025 08:34

Mary Janes are fine…if you’re 5 years old.

Saltysea2001 · 08/06/2025 08:38

I imagine lots of people wouldn’t like your shoes either OP.

Giggorata · 08/06/2025 09:15

Dolly shoes are very comfortable and good for the feet if flat, with a wide toe box and a strap to prevent toe bunching to keep shoes on.
If we want a healthy and active older age, we have to start with the feet, so that we can retain mobility, good posture, etc.
Cramming our feet into stiff, pointed, heeled, more glam footwear day after day is asking for trouble.
I still wear them for nights out, tottering from taxi to bar stool, of course.

Citrusandginger · 08/06/2025 15:22

I know it’s a zombie thread, but MJ’s still look as bad as they did when this thread started.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/06/2025 15:24

The heeled ones are elegant, like most things 1920s/30s.

kissmyfatass · 08/06/2025 15:25

I used to love the little velvet ones
