The M&S calendar I’ve bought MiL has arrived and I am a bit disappointed with how naff the container is. I was contemplating getting myself one but now I think I am going into December entirely calendarless for the first time in years.

MidnightMeltdown · 30/10/2023 12:27

Yeah I wish that M&S had just put the calendar in a nice box. At least then it would be recyclable. There are going to be thousands of these cosmetics cases in landfill after Christmas

Peridot1 · 30/10/2023 12:30

It’s mainly the bag that’s put me off the M&S one

Cyclingmummy1 · 30/10/2023 12:33

The M&S bag is incredibly cheap looking and feels even cheaper.

Doubleraspberry · 30/10/2023 12:56

Definitely landfill waiting to happen. And I’m gloomily expecting MiL to give it to DD once she’s done with it, so it will be back in our house after Christmas.

Hi all!

Joining this thread because I've just caved and ordered the Vogue calendar having already ordered the Selfridges one 2 days ago Confused!!

BUT I'm justifying it as I've been looking for a nice black leather card holder and some nice gold jewellery and I like all the stuff in this one, so its worth it...right?!?

MavisMcMinty · 30/10/2023 13:13

Things are “worth” whatever people are prepared to pay for them!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 30/10/2023 13:56

Agree about the M & S case, it really is awful. A large version of those naff bags you used to get as a gift with Avon Confused

Really cheapens it

The poor charity shops in January. M&S cosmetic bags and naff Christmas jumpers!!

Another CB edit coming soon

Beauty Advent Calendars 2023 Part C - counting down to Christmas
Housewife2010 · 30/10/2023 14:57

I really like the cake tin which the M&S AC came in a couple of years ago. I use it regularly and it looks really nice. It would have been so nice if the AC had come in a festive red cake tin this year. I would have been far more likely to buy it.

Possimpible · 30/10/2023 15:02

Never mind advent calendar fatigue, I've definitely got beauty edit fatigue. Less is more...

I liked the cake tin too @Housewife2010 , I still use it for storage (and probably some of the products in the tin were from that calendar! Need to use more up cos they'll go off)

Housewife2010 · 30/10/2023 15:08

It would be great if we got a different coloured cake tin every year. They'd look nice stacked up together.

Peridot1 · 30/10/2023 15:11

Yes. Think tins would be a much better idea. They can be used for storage or recycled. Good strong cardboard boxes would be the same. Useable or recyclable.

MidnightMeltdown · 30/10/2023 15:21

I'm guessing that the cosmetics case was cheaper to produce, which is why they've gone with that.

They've not raised the price of their calendar so they are probably trying to economise in other ways.

Unfortunately the cheapest materials are usually the worst ones

Ilikeyoursleeves · 30/10/2023 15:36

I just got my Molton Brown AC delivered and it's HUGGGEEE and so heavy!!! I'm v excited 🤩

HollyGolightly4 · 30/10/2023 16:40

Yay @Canttouchthis88 welcome to the vogue club!

Dee1224 · 30/10/2023 17:02

Hi all, House of Fraser have 20% off ‘almost everything’, which includes the Clarins 12 day calendar and the EL gift boxes, but NOT the EL blockbuster.

I assume the discount also works with other advent calendars they may stock, but I only checked the two items above when I was instore.

Nearlyadoctor · 30/10/2023 18:00

I looked at the M&S in store over the weekend, the vanity case looked so cheap and flimsy -I can’t imagine anyone really using it, such a waste.

RedRiverShore4 · 30/10/2023 18:12

My M&S storage case will probably end up in the shed, DH will find some storage use for it

itsnothingoriginal · 30/10/2023 18:41

M&S came today. Agree about the cheap feel to the cosmetic case....not what I had expected. Will be ok for DD's hair bobbles and stuff but agree I'd have liked another tin as its the perfect size for cakes and I use it loads!

I'm still hoping the Rituals premium calendar will be reduced as I got mine on offer just before Christmas last year and had it for January.

NeedWineNow · 30/10/2023 18:51

Going against the grain here, but I got the M&S advent calendar today and I think it's great value. It's full of products that I do actually use unlike the previous summer boxes and last year's advent calendar. Yes, the bag isn't the greatest quality, but it will be ok for storage at home. DH also suggested I could use it as a packing cube when we go away next year which is a good idea. I suspect more than a few bags will make their way to charity shops, and if charities can benefit from them then surely that's to the good.

Compared to the price of some of the more 'high end' calendars which come in boxes which subsequently are disposed of, I think the M&S one this year is a good one.

Possimpible · 30/10/2023 19:05

I don't think anyone's disagreeing with that @NeedWineNow , and lots of people on this thread have bought the M&S one because it is such good value. It just seems to be that bag it comes in that's a bit of a disappointment. The high-end calendars come in boxes that can be recycled at least, that vanity case will just go to landfill sooner or later. In a time when we're all trying to be more sustainable it seems a bit of a miss. I reckon it has come down to cheaper cost of production.

MidnightMeltdown · 30/10/2023 19:12

Love it how you lot are using your old M&S calendar tin for cake 😂

I hadn't even thought about doing that! I wasn't sure that it would be airtight. Mine is currently full of perfumes!

Pinenu · 30/10/2023 19:17

I’m fairly happy with the M&S case. I wasn’t in need of one or planning any specific use for it so it’s a nice extra. I’ll certainly find a place for it.

I still don’t know how I’ve ended up with the calendar after being sure I didn’t want it mind 😂 But happy it’s here and I’m now in good supply of tights for the winter.
