Best things to buy in Uniqlo?

I'm 48, size 12/14, 5 foot 6 - what good, flattering stuff should I get from Uniqlo?

Their down coats are the best! I hand washed mine with laundry detergent in the bath after DS puked on me, then I hung it over the bath to dry naturally (took about three days). It’s not something I’d do frequently but it is doable in an emergency.

@VelvetVoice Have you washed the dress yet? I almost bought it the other day but was worried about shrinkage/awful wrinkling.

I will hopefully wear it this Sat for the 1st time and I can come back and let you know.

Really wish they had different colours and patterns since it fits beautifully but out of what is available, only the blue one appeals to me -

Dee1224 · 05/10/2023 22:15

Thanks so much @VelvetVoice . I really loved the blue when I tried it on.

I bought the U collection blue crinkled skirt, which I am hoping will survive washing. I wanted the U funnel neck jumper but it said hand wash only and I hate hand washing- especially jumpers.

@WhereAreWeNow The material is quite heavy but soft and almost velvety.

I am a size 16 bottom and the XL fits nicely, if a little loose around the waist (but that is a commin issue for me as I have big hip to waist ratio). They are quite long, I am 5ft 8in and I think I may need a small heel to avoid them dragging on the ground .

BarnacleBeasley · 06/10/2023 09:20

@WhereAreWeNow I have those trousers too. I'm a size 10 and the S fits well. By contrast with @Ginmonkeyagain I worried when I first unpacked them that the waistband looked a bit small, but actually it's fine as it has plenty of give in it. The material is thick but I think this is what makes it hang well - they look and feel like wool even though they aren't. I'd also say that the S are exactly the right length for me and I am 5'4'' - they work fine with a medium heel and look smart for work, but are also okay and not trailing on the ground with trainers for a more slouchy look. However, I am wearing them on my natural waist (and have a tiny waist to hip ratio!) whereas Ginmonkey probably has them sitting lower on her hips as waist too big for her. So I'd say if you're tall, maybe consider sizing up, but otherwise they seem true to size.

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/10/2023 09:23

I deploy a belt to make them it on my natural waist.

I have to wear a belt with all my trousers. 🙄

Okay, in that case I definitely recommend@WhereAreWeNow sizing up if tall, if you're choosing between XS-S-M, and probably not needing to if you're L-XL.

The posters who said they got the Comptoir des Cottoniers wide trousers, do they come up big? And does the material look nice IRL? Online it looks v thick and I wonder how it will hang.

I ordered these. I'm a size 12 and ordered a M and they fitted well on the waist. The material is quite thick and soft.

They come in 3 different lengths, and I got the shortest ones. The length was fine for me, but I sent them back, as although they fit well on the waist, they were just a little too baggy elsewhere😪

BarnacleBeasley · 06/10/2023 09:47

Oh good point about the different lengths! Just to add that I got the regular length and the S was right for me (but if you were taller than 5'4'' you might want the long ones).

WhereAreWeNow · 06/10/2023 10:25

Thanks everyone. I buy longer length in uniqlo (and it's still a cm or two shorter than I'd like). I might give these a go. I love the high waist, pleated wide leg trousers and these look similar but in a heavier fabric.

I can't find the new colour corduroy half moon bags online ☹️ looking for the burgundy one

I've got some lovely pieces from Uniqlo over the years, some I've had for 7+ years that still get comments

But I haven't found anything I like for the last few seasons

@TomAllenWife just popped back into Oxford St and took this pic of the corduroy bags - these are the only colours they have in the store, if it helps.

@Quebeccles thank you for that update, those are the colours they have online too
Gutted I've missed the burgundy

As PP said up-thread, there wasn't a burgundy corduroy one, just a polyester one, which I think is itself now no longer online. So you haven't missed out and there's always the chance they'll bring out a corduroy version at some point. Fingers crossed.

Orientalnamechange · 06/10/2023 18:02

I've just been to NYC and they had it there 🤦🏼‍♀️

AuntieMarys · 06/10/2023 18:03

I wish they did longer lengths!

WhereAreWeNow · 07/10/2023 07:26

They do have some longer lengths @AuntieMarys but only online and they're still not that long compared to say Next longer trousers.

Icedlatteplease · 11/10/2023 16:42

Just wanted to pop back now I have the clothes.

These shoes are so comfy and an absolute bargain. I'm absolutely delighted with them

I picked up a couple of knit dresses and a knit skirt that were fab. https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/premium-lambswool-mini-skirt-462148.html

This dress that someone else mentioned was gorgeous, but you need to size up I think if you have boobs. I have a couple of uniqlo large dresses that fit with space to spare but this was tight.

The wide leg cord trousers. I loved them but again i found them small (which seems odd as the reviews say the opposite). Maybe it was just that they were lacking hips....

Debating going back for the boots given the quality of the shoes, but wonder if they look a bit chunky?

I liked the style of the loafers and boots but didn’t buy them after noticing they’re plastic. I find at Uniqlo you have to check the materials very carefully. One handbag might be plastic while another is leather, but they look similar. One jumper might be machine washable acrylic while another is dry clean only wool, etc.

The designer collaborations are usually very good though, and you actually stand a chance of getting your hands on them (unlike H&M for example where the quantities are so small you can’t get one, then they appear on Ebay for 5x the price). The current Comptoir de Cottonniers collection is amazing, beautifully fitted and lovely materials.

CharlotteRumpling · 11/10/2023 18:08

Yes the shoes and boots are deceptively nice!

Kaill · 11/10/2023 18:09

Oh and it’s also worth having a look at the Uniqlo U collection. It’s designed by Lemaire so obviously it’s beautiful. I have no idea why they don’t seem to advertise that fact widely, but if you can’t afford Lemaire then have a look at Uniqlo U!

Dee1224 · 11/10/2023 18:14

Thanks for feeding back @Icedlatteplease
I want the dress, but am worried about how it would wash.

@VelvetVoice - how did you get on with the dress?

EfficientlyDecluttering · 11/10/2023 19:08

I bought the nylon bag in burgundy online in the summer, followed by the black cord one more recently and an olive green nylon one in the Covent Garden store at the weekend. I don’t think they had the burgundy one, I didn’t notice any. I’ve never seen anyone else with one either, I seem to mainly see the olive ones out and about. Comparing the corduroy and nylon ones - they are both the same size and capacity, but the cord one is slightly bulkier due to the thicker fabric and sort of sticks out in front of you a bit more as a result. It looks smarter though. They are the best bags I have had in a long time.

nutsnutspistachionuts · 11/10/2023 20:09

yy men's cashmere much better. They were better 10 years ago but what wasn't?

Current season for men, DH just bought this coat and it's brilliant: https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/balmacaan-coat-459630.html?dwvar_459630_color=COL38&dwvar_459630_size=SMA002 size down at least one size though, it's huge
