Best things to buy in Uniqlo?

I'm 48, size 12/14, 5 foot 6 - what good, flattering stuff should I get from Uniqlo?

OP posts:
DrMarshaFieldstone · 04/10/2023 08:08

Yes to HeatTech and ultra light down. Their merino knitwear is absolutely excellent. The cashmere is mediocre.

Halsall · 04/10/2023 08:14

It’s not exactly stylish but their tartan pyjamas are fantastic quality and really cosy. I wait for the sales to buy them, though.

Otherwise, down coats all the way. I live in mine all winter. I’m another who's successfully washed them.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 04/10/2023 08:16

You can certainly wash the down. The problem is drying it and I wouldn’t attempt it unless you have a tumble dryer, with dryer or tennis balls to pummel the lumps out.

Apologies for asking a question within another thread but how is their sizing? I’m a 12/14. Would you go for a medium or large in sweatshirts and hoodies?

The sizing is insane.
I am a 12/14 and an XL is snug.
Uniqlo is the polar opposite of vanity sizing.

@Yoyoyo1 the plain shirts are the best quality ever. They were in-store at £14.99 this summer and better than some at double the price. BUT when I ordered more online, it was as if it was a completely different product. Really weird. Same product, code, price, quality not half as good.

CharlotteRumpling · 04/10/2023 08:23

The sizing is all over the place and they now charge for returns, so I buy in store..It's not always the opposite of vanity sizing. The shirts often tend to be huge, the sweatshirts tiny. The size tool doesn't worm well for me ( I am a 10-12).

I'm the same size as you. You can find out the actual size of each garment if you click on the size guide button. If you prefer a looser fit, I'd say go large, but some of their stuff can be quite a casual fit, so its good to look at the measurements of each item then decide.

Pigtailsandall · 04/10/2023 09:58

I think they are pretty good and accurate at putting measurements of each garment on their website, you just have to check individually for each item. I actually like the sweatshirts being a bit more fitted so I buy the XL and I'm size 14/16 and it's perfect

BarnacleBeasley · 04/10/2023 10:07

What I find useful for the sizing is the pictures customers send in of themselves wearing the items, which usually say what size they bought. I'm a 10 (sometimes an 8) and I find a lot of them on the slightly larger side, while people who are 12/14 are saying they are a bit small. I think this happens when the difference between sizes is quite small - so anything bigger than an M comes up small and anything smaller comes up big.

Anyway, I am loving the Comptoir des Cotonniers collaboration at the moment - just got some of the wide-legged trousers and they fit really well and look and feel way more expensive than they were.

Colourfulponderings · 04/10/2023 10:11

Does anyone know if you can machine wash the jumpers (on a wool cycle). I want a wool jumper that’s properly warm but I know I can’t commit to a hand wash only and can’t bear to spend the money on a good wool one only to find it can’t be washed.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 04/10/2023 10:19

@Colourfulponderings they specifically market the merino as machine-washable. The lambswool and cashmere care labels are both hand-wash.

However, in my experience if you have a decent wool cycle on your machine then everything is machine-washable! The key is drying it flat.

LodiDodi · 04/10/2023 10:56

I work at Uniqlo. Anything in the collaboration with Comptoir des Cottoniers is beautiful. We had a long dark velvet skirt in from that collection but it got recalled, I think it might still be online though. The U collection is currently out but very limited, probably better luck in store than online for that one. Best sellers are the Airism crew neck t shirts (in the men's collection but women buy them) and the round mini shoulder bag which PPs have mentioned (in the women's collection but again, men buy them).
What I've bought since working there (only started a couple of months ago):
3 of the rayon blouses
1 long dark grey denim skirt from the U collection
1 mini shoulder bag in green corduroy
1 pair of pleated wide leg trousers
1 pair of smart straight trousers
2 airism t shirts
2 pairs of corduroy trousers, but not the regular corduroys, ones from the lounge wear section that have elasticated waits. In black and cream.
I'm actually creating smart wardrobe for my new job in a professional role which starts soon so this job has been a blessing for that!

BarnacleBeasley · 04/10/2023 11:07

@LodiDodi ooh, I really want some of those elasticated waist corduroy trousers! Forgot to put them into my last order. They're a bit like the ones from Toast but way cheaper.

specialguest · 04/10/2023 11:17

I find their sizing pretty bob on. I'm a size 12 and a medium usually fits in the standard range. I sometimes need a S in shirts if they're oversized.

The collaborations seem to be sized bigger, certainly with the Uniqlo U range I've had to size down to a S or return because too long on the leg or sleeve (I'm 5 ft 3).

Sgtmajormummy · 04/10/2023 11:22

We had a stain issue with an Airism men’s T-shirt. The fabric is not pure cotton so oily dressing dribbles (!) took 3 different tries to come out.
DD loves their wide legged pleated trousers.

groovergirl · 04/10/2023 12:08

Excellent T shirts, especially the slim-cut crew-neck, and I love the beautiful, slightly odd colours such as the dark teal and the tomato red. I'm size 12 with 12D boobs and wear an M for a neat but not tight fit, if that helps.
DD 15 loves her Heat Tech tops and sports crops.

I've just got the flannel wide leg trousers. They have pockets! I'm going to get another pair in grey, I think as they are really nice to wear and make a change from the more casual jersey trousers I've been slouching around in at home.

I also have been impressed with the airism light absorbency hip hugger period pants but they are currently sold out of my size

It's already been mentioned but I HAVE to join in singing the praises of the little half moon bag!! I've just got one in a sort of burgundy red colour. It's incredible what fits into it, it's light, easy and comfy to wear, easy to style. Perfect.

LunaNorth · 04/10/2023 18:14

I liked the wide leg trousers so much I bought them in three colours. Flattering, great quality for the price and really comfortable thanks to the hidden stretch waistband.

I’m a 14 and the large fits me perfectly.

Vitriolinsanity · 04/10/2023 20:49

The heat tech jeggings are a complete staple.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 04/10/2023 21:40

I'm a 12-14 and sizing is all over the place as PP have said. Some knitwear I'm a S, most tops a M, some coats a L.
P.S: DH says the men's socks are super comfy but sadly the quality is crap.

Nachtvlinder · 04/10/2023 22:26

I buy their cashmere jumpers, merino wool cardigans, gym thin trousers, Airism gym jacket thingy, cotton shirts, work trousers. They wear so well and good quality.
