Mother of the groom outfit

Toooldtoworry · 15/07/2023 08:46

My son is getting married next April in a older hotel (thatched roof, open fire, etc). It is a small affair (21 Inc them) and I need something to wear.

I'll be 46. I'm 5'5 and a size 12. Pear shaped. I want to wear a dress, because I live in jeans I'm struggling to get any idea.

Budget probably iro £150.

I want to look classy please.

Have a look round a department store. Then you can try on a few things, get an idea for the type of thing you'll like

If you Google mother of the groom outfits, loads of stuff comes up 😀

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMeAgain · 15/07/2023 09:03

The key is to start trying various styles on and whittle down to what you feel the best in.

Bombshell dresses can be a great shape on pears and cinch in your waist. Some £££ but probably a sale on as it’s summer.

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMeAgain · 15/07/2023 09:03

Do you have a colour in mind?

geoger · 15/07/2023 09:06

Have look at Phase Eight, Reiss or Gina Bacconi - lovely dresses and even 2 piece dress and jacket outfits. You’ll easily find something given your height and size

geoger · 15/07/2023 09:09

Also try Lipsy - lots on sale on the Next website

Please don't go down the type of thing that comes up when you Google 'mother of the groom outfits' and definitely not a matching dress and jacket combo. I'd have a look at the French brands Maje, Sandro and Sezanne, which should have something in budget in the sales. How about this for example? https://es.maje.com/es/pret-a-porter/coleccion/vestidos/vestidos-largos/223rannicka/MFPRO02914.html?dwvar_MFPRO02914_color=0859 I'm in Spain so it's the Spanish site bit you should find it on the UK site.

Ignore the suggestion of Maje above, there's only one dress in budget and it's not suitable for a wedding.

In the order of females at a wedding first is the bride, second the mother of the bride then the mother of the groom.

I'd look at Monsoon and remember you don't need to go all out glam

Why not a matching dress and jacket ? Confused

Sound MUCH nicer than the yellow one linked to.

Boomboom22 · 15/07/2023 16:07

Most of the dresses linked are basic guest dresses not wedding party dresses. And what is wrong with a nice jacket? Def not a wrap dress ffs.

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/07/2023 16:33

I think it depends a bit on the crowd.
Weddings I've been at or had close association with this year have had mob in smart silk tea dress with hat
Rixo x2
Brightly coloured suit with fascinator
Trouser suit
I'm not seeing coffee coloured two pieces any longer.
Looking at gossip style mags the mobs are often dressed similarly to the guests now.
I suppose it is a question of style of the wedding party generally eg are the men wearing morning suits , is it a hippyish crowd , arty, traditional with lots of elderly relatives etc.
Most importantly you should feel a bit special so try on loads if you have the time and interest!

thedevilinablackdress · 15/07/2023 16:39

What colours would you like OP? Length of dress? Sleeves? Do you think you'll want a jacket or cover up of some kind? Hopefully we can then adviser on something that you like and feel good in, not a generic MOG outfit.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 15/07/2023 16:45

Have a look at Pre-loved Wedding and Occasion Outfits UK on Facebook. Loads of ideas there.

Beaverbridge · 15/07/2023 17:07

Some charity shops do mog outfits. Whole shebang, bag, hat or fascinator and shoes. Saw a nice one other day, less than £50.

Crystals35 · 15/07/2023 17:14

You might be better going to an actual shop though. Also think about having the outfit professionally altered for a good fit.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 15/07/2023 17:18

Dear god, that pink satin combo is quite the sight!

OP, you’re 46… young… the world is your oyster - whose style do you like? That might be a good starting point.

Smittenkitchen · 15/07/2023 17:22

Nancy Mac has some absolutely beautiful dresses, if it's a style you like (40's style silouttes). I think don't think about being MOB, just get something you feel great in that suits you and has a sense of occasion about it.

For a 46 year old?! No way.

This, and the advice in the first 3 replies is great advice.

The fact you are so young, and the fact it is a very small wedding both alter the formalness of the role and therefore the outfit.

Go and have fun trying on a few different things and narrow down what you are looking at. Make a day of it - take a trusted friend with you who will give you honest opinions.

midsomermurderess · 15/07/2023 17:58

This Phase 8 dresses are desperately dull, as if you are trying hard not be to noticed.

This is awful and doesn’t have the class of a matching suit and jacket.
