Mother of the groom outfit

Toooldtoworry · 15/07/2023 08:46

My son is getting married next April in a older hotel (thatched roof, open fire, etc). It is a small affair (21 Inc them) and I need something to wear.

I'll be 46. I'm 5'5 and a size 12. Pear shaped. I want to wear a dress, because I live in jeans I'm struggling to get any idea.

Budget probably iro £150.

I want to look classy please.

If you Google mother of the groom outfits, loads of stuff comes up 😀

Most of which should be ignored.

midsomermurderess · 15/07/2023 18:07

Some of the Nancy Mac ones are quite nice. I like the cutoif the jumpsuits. Would they work for mother of the groom?

Doggymummar · 15/07/2023 18:07

Being mother of the groom doesn't mean dress like a pensioner. Just upgrade your usual style, a slightly more expensive brand for example. Sounds like a simple wedding you don't want to be ott.

For a 46 year old?! No way.

If you reverse the numbers that's my age. I'd never wear that. It's not an age thing.

ForTheSnarkWasABoojumYouSee · 15/07/2023 18:18

Blimey, how long is a piece of string?

What's your favourite colour on you?

How do you react to the following words?
Quirky
Architect
Retro
Boho

How do you feel about showing your shoulders/cleavage/knees? (Yes I know that 46 is very young to be a MOG, so it seems mad to talk about covering up, but some forty somethings do like having some body parts covered, especially if they never wear dresses, and as a fellow pear-shape I loathe anything v necked).

But you've got lots of time. I suggest you spend the next couple of weeks looking at women wearing dresses on TV and whenever you're out somewhere smart to get your eye in and see what kind of dresses you actually like, and only then go to a shop and start trying loads of things on.

Sussurations · 15/07/2023 18:19

My suggestion is to browse a couple of high end sites like Net a Porter or Matches, ignoring the prices completely, to get your eye in both for style of dress and styling/accessories, then look elsewhere for similar styles you like in your price bracket.

Id also advise getting something as comfortable as possible so you can relax on the day and that you can wear again.

Christ on a bike.

Not your taste, then? OK

PostOpOp · 15/07/2023 18:29

It's going to be April, so a jacket/bolero/shrug will likely be needed.

Is the groom wearing a suit? What sort? Or is he wearing formal trousers and a waistcoat or just shirt? These things will give you an idea of how dressed up/formal you need to be.

Also remember you can rent outfits and with your budget you should be able to find quite a lot.

Ignore the suggestion of Maje above, there's only one dress in budget and it's not suitable for a wedding.

In the order of females at a wedding first is the bride, second the mother of the bride then the mother of the groom.

I'd look at Monsoon and remember you don't need to go all out glam

Why is the MOG less important than the MOB???

ramonaquimby · 15/07/2023 18:37

The first phase 8 dress (Julissa?) is so flattering on. I have it in a different colour from last year and have worn to several weddings. (I’m not mother if groom though!)

NoSauce · 15/07/2023 18:40

OP have a look at Me and Em. There’s a sale on at the minute.

NatashaDancing · 15/07/2023 18:41

I meant The OP on this thread was looking for a dress o get to married in but didn't want a wedding dress.

Why is the MOG less important than the MOB???

Because the bride's family are traditionally the hosts of the wedding. They have a formal place in the day that the groom's family don't.

Obviously if you're not going with that sort of traditional/old fashioned approach then that doesn't apply.

mnahmnah · 15/07/2023 18:49

I think this is statement enough as MOG, but classy. From Lipsy on the Next website.

Nancy Mac has some absolutely beautiful dresses, if it's a style you like (40's style silouttes). I think don't think about being MOB, just get something you feel great in that suits you and has a sense of occasion about it.

I've not come across Nancy Mac before. Really beautiful stuff on it.

Whatisityoucantface · 15/07/2023 19:10

I agree with pp that you search net a porter. Or even better The Outnet which is their discount site. I’d recommend Diane Von Furstenburg or Self Portrait, they have great midi dresses (Kate Middleton wearing them today at Wimbledon https://www.self-portrait.com/products/lime-boucle-collared-chiffon-midi-dress)
Find what you like, maybe go try on in Selfridges or Harvey Nichols. Then wait for a sale or look on Vinted or Depop and buy preworn for a fraction of the price.

Thank you to the PP who shared the Nancy Mac link, I hadn't come across that site and they have some lovely dresses. You may have solved my outfit dilemma for a wedding next year. 😊

OP, I would try to find out what sort of outfit the MOB is wearing and what colours / style the B&G are looking at so that you can be coordinated both in colour and in level of formalness (if that's even a word). You don't have to match but it might help to narrow down your options.

Another tip would be to get a trusted friend to take some photos of you in your intended outfit. Presumably you'll be in lots of the wedding photos and you'll get a better idea of how you'll look on the day compared just looking in the mirror.

Chickenpie35 · 15/07/2023 19:45

My mum wore a kaleidoscope dress.

Ended in being from Freemans after searching and searching and then someone mentioned kaleidoscope and on a Google search came up on sale at freemans. She bought it in one go bit if it helps could get an account and pay for it using credit

PollyThePixie · 15/07/2023 19:46

There’s a fabulouS FB group selling pre loved MOB outfits.
