My son is getting married next April in a older hotel (thatched roof, open fire, etc). It is a small affair (21 Inc them) and I need something to wear.

I'll be 46. I'm 5'5 and a size 12. Pear shaped. I want to wear a dress, because I live in jeans I'm struggling to get any idea.

Budget probably iro £150.

I want to look classy please.

Also
Jjshouse.co.uk. most dresses on here you can choose from over 40 colours and standard sizes or custom sizes. My bridesmaids dresses from here ( lock down wedding no trying dresses on in bridal shops / any shops) quality is amazing

My suggestion is to browse a couple of high end sites like Net a Porter or Matches, ignoring the prices completely, to get your eye in both for style of dress and styling/accessories, then look elsewhere for similar styles you like in your price bracket.

Id also advise getting something as comfortable as possible so you can relax on the day and that you can wear again.

Thirded re Net a Porter and such like

I did the John Lewis stylist appointment. For me it turned out to be a waste of time but other people rate it.
There is a [mostly nice and friendly] Facebook group for buying and selling this type of outfit

This doesn't look very exciting but looks like it hangs beautifully in the video.

That would be lovely if it didn't have the short hem at the front.

FartNRoses · 15/07/2023 20:49

Quite bold, but I like this.

II agree with whoever said some of these look like normal guest wear.

Whilst the dress and jacket combo might not be cool it’s recognisable wedding wear. Weddings are probably the only occasion when looking over dressed is absolutely fine. Better that then turning up in the same outfit as your brothers new girlfriend is wearing.

I wouldn't turn up if someone told me I had to wear that dress.

I can't be a mother of the bride but if I'm ever the mother of the groom I won't be googling "mother of the groom outfits"

Please don't go down the type of thing that comes up when you Google 'mother of the groom outfits' and definitely not a matching dress and jacket combo. I'd have a look at the French brands Maje, Sandro and Sezanne, which should have something in budget in the sales. How about this for example? https://es.maje.com/es/pret-a-porter/coleccion/vestidos/vestidos-largos/223rannicka/MFPRO02914.html?dwvar_MFPRO02914_color=0859 I'm in Spain so it's the Spanish site bit you should find it on the UK site.

Those dresses are fabulous!

My son got married last week. I had bought a maxi dress with a little jacket to wear last year and at the last moment I randomly bought a maxi soft gold shimmery dress from H&M. It was super sheer so I stick a slip under it. It was very plain but subtly pretty. It was 30 quid. I ended up wearing this instead of the 400 pound outfit I’d originally bought. EVERYONE commented on my ‘lovely’ dress. I didn’t even buy it for the wedding I just bought it becaus I liked it. Turned out to be perfect!

Dinopawus · 15/07/2023 22:24

Don't forget eBay. A lot of phase eight stuff is sold on after one wear.

Sureaseggs44 · 15/07/2023 22:54

It’s personal taste , but I am an older lady and I would never wear that . Too old fashioned.

mdinbc · 16/07/2023 01:41

Oh boy, don't google 'mother of groom' outfits! I don't know what the internet is thinking... no beige embroidered dresses for me!

My son was married in June. I wore a tea-length floral dress (I had the below dress hemmed), and bought a lavender blazer but didn't end up wearing it since it was so warm. All the bridesmaids were in soft pink, so I was in the same colour family without being too matchy. We don't do hats here in Canada.

Buy something that suits your shape, makes you feel fantastic, and you can be comfortable in for hours; it ends up being a long day! Congratulations.

What about this? But not necessarily in navy (I prefer brighter colours) it’s from Lipsy

Don’t get those typical mother of the bride/groom outfits that they were wearing back in the 70s. Phase 8/Reiss/LK Bennett usually have nice dresses.

Theblacksheepandme · 15/07/2023 15:00

I quite like this I know it's beyond your budget but as it's your son getting married could you up the budget?

https://rixolondon.com/products/meera-waterblossom-red

That is VERY nice, but we are paying for the wedding so unfortunately out of budget. Might keep an eye on that though in case it goes on sale at any point.
