I have turned into Eddie Izzard, but without the name and fame...

I have always had very masculine features. Think square jaw, big potato nose, thick eyebrows etc. It's only got worse as I have gotten older. My eyes used to be large and helped balance my nose; now have gotten smaller with time. I also photograph really badly and get photographed a lot in my job!

Today I was wearing a quite simple print shift dress, caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror, and thought Eddie "Suzy"Izzard. Or Grayson Perry. Urgh.

I don't even know why I am posting this. Maybe misery loves company? I don't believe in cosmetic surgery and won't be getting it, so I just have to find some way of living with this.

The frilly poufy fashions of today don't suit me at all, either.

Maybe shaping your brows professionally. It can make a huge difference to the face.

Also the hairstyle you choose affects how your face shape looks.

CharlotteRumpling · 12/06/2023 18:46

I do shape my eyebrows though I stopped in Covid. I wear a bit of makeup but heavy makeup does not suit me. ( also olive skinned).

Hair is a wavy lob just grazing my shoulders ( not unlike Grayson Perry).

Go for a slightly more severe look than flouncy stuff or the Izzard look. Think Caroline in Succession, for example.

IClaudine · 12/06/2023 18:51

I bet you are being hard on yourself though.

CM283648 · 12/06/2023 18:52

@CharlotteRumpling I think putting makeup on could help. Try blush, highlighter, and a light lipstick. You could try for the cheekbones, this https://wheretoget.com/magazine/soften-your-features-with-makeup if you want. Hope this helps 😄

I agree with looking more severe, like Fiona Shaw in Killing Eve

CharlotteRumpling · 13/06/2023 08:34

I love both Harriet Walter and Fiona Shaw, and I have resting bitch face anyway.
Thanks all. Must remember I have other genetic advantages, like good skin. Should tone up a bit to look like Harriet though!

My mum also has a severe face and now looks very distinguished in her old age.

Step away from the foals and frills, and i don't think makeup is necessarily a good idea, depends on how it's applied. Look for masculine shirt dresses fit example, one of these with a good collar, block collar, and nice sandals and bag with a good hair cut ep be loads better.

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 13/06/2023 08:47

I look just like grayson Perry in anything short with any hint of a frill.

Shirt dresses suit me

MissKittyFantastico84 · 13/06/2023 08:52

Previous posters have got it right! Lean into it, and go for polished, strong, imposing, dare I say.... intimidating looks! Embrace the way you look ☺️

Get those eyebrows threaded though. It makes such a difference. You don't think it will and then BAM.

What’s wrong looking like Eddie "Suzy" Izzard?

Nothing, if you're Eddie Izzard

What’s wrong with this poster looking like Eddie? Presumably that is just how she looks and isn’t trying hard to copy his style?

What’s wrong with OP looking a state? Not that I believe she does. But why are women expected to look polished all the time?

JaneJeffer · 13/06/2023 09:51

Yeah I don't think so @LillyoftheMountain she's not a man for starters.

Somanycats · 13/06/2023 09:52

I salute your inner Izzard, but raise you bloody Jeremy Clarkson! I've given up the fight more or less!

I realised the other day that if I just let my hair dry naturally its no longer 'casual French chic' but I look like James May.

JaneJeffer · 13/06/2023 10:00

We must be related @Blarn

OP doesn't want to, that's why she started thread.

loislovesstewie · 13/06/2023 10:07

OP, even as a young woman I couldn't do frills. I'd have done quite well when regency dresses were the fashion, but anything with frills, flounces etc, just no. I look far better in fitted clothes, nothing baggy or figure skimming. And, sorry to say, it has to be a graduated Bob, anything else is too harsh. I think you just need to find a style that suits you, don't follow fashion and become an innovator of it!

loislovesstewie · 13/06/2023 10:08

Sorry bob, clearly my mate Bob isn't being graduated!

Nothing would be wrong if she was happy looking like Eddie Izzard, but she thinks she does and she isn’t happy! The issue isn’t whether or not she actually looks like Eddie Izzard (I would say probably not!) or whether or not it’s ok to look like Eddie Izzard (of course, if you want to). The op has some features which she wishes to downplay, others she might wish to accentuate. Unless we’re very lucky, that’s the same for most of us. That’s why people use makeup and hairdressers. It’s fine and totally up to her. It doesn’t sound like it’s impacting her life to a huge extent.
