I have turned into Eddie Izzard, but without the name and fame...

I have always had very masculine features. Think square jaw, big potato nose, thick eyebrows etc. It's only got worse as I have gotten older. My eyes used to be large and helped balance my nose; now have gotten smaller with time. I also photograph really badly and get photographed a lot in my job!

Today I was wearing a quite simple print shift dress, caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror, and thought Eddie "Suzy"Izzard. Or Grayson Perry. Urgh.

I don't even know why I am posting this. Maybe misery loves company? I don't believe in cosmetic surgery and won't be getting it, so I just have to find some way of living with this.

The frilly poufy fashions of today don't suit me at all, either.

Surely that should be Sad but True? :)

This made me chuckle as I actually had my hair cut specifically like his when I was a teen, he had a fine mop that present me, with post partum hair loss can only dream of!

GAH!!! Sad but true of course - can't believe I missed that Grin

@MyOtherCarIsAPorsche you have cheered me up so much, I've been crying with laughter, thank you for posting that. I think as you age you do look more masculine as your jowls drop, plus the beard of course...

JaneJeffer · 14/06/2023 15:22

My DS says I look like a protester
😂

Thanks again for all the messages. Today I wore a very simple tshirt dress in teal, a no-brand bought from some boutique in Greece. I like to think Caroline in Succession may have worn it if she lost all her money! I think I look better in very simple cuts.

And also I am astonished that Mountain Warehouse has cotton dresses @Comefromaway . I quite like the navy one; it looks sleek for that price. I also like that rust coloured one @QueenOfThorns. My arms are not exactly toned these days but who cares really...

To pp who said Cos, I really like it on the website. But sometimes it doesn't look good on my slightly saggy body. or sometimes the sleeves look ok on the model but not so great on me.

Just scheduled a haircut and eyebrow trim for the weekend. I also think I need to blowdry my hair every day in the summer, as it's gone all frizzy and Hairy Bikers.

I meant to say I am referring to my beard of course, not anyone else's...

OrbandSpectacle · 14/06/2023 17:00

Can so relate. Looking at a recent photo a couple of weeks ago, my immediate thought was bruiser in a blouse.........

Itsbeennice · 14/06/2023 17:10

I have to Veet my face. My whole face.

Bubbylana · 14/06/2023 17:11

I was told once without makeup I look like Dennis Waterman. Funny enough when my dad was younger he did look like a young Dennis. Who wants to look like Eddie Izzard? He just looks like himself in a dress with bright red lipstick.

I feel you OP and everyone else with undesirable doppelgängers. In my mind’s eye I’m late-model Gillian Anderson, in reality I’m Iggy Pop 🤣

Yup. I'm Meg Ryan in my head. In everyone else's - I'm James May.

The right length of cut makes a massive difference. I never used to notice this, but my hairdresser mate pointed out to me how many women have hair lengths that ‘hit’ at the wrong place for their face -including me!

Now this has been pointed out, I can’t unsee it. I think a lot of women end up with a longish bob because they don’t want to go too short but, if you have a longish or mannish face, it accentuates that and gives the dreaded Savile effect, as mentioned upthread 😀

TwoOwlSocks · 14/06/2023 18:46

I agree, ish. I have a long face and a nifty jaw length bob with some volume at the sides did the job for years. But then the jowls developed and I decided I had to grow it to well below my chin to disguise the shocking side view.
So basically my look morphed from James May to James Savile. 😫

I realised the other day that if I just let my hair dry naturally its no longer 'casual French chic' but I look like James May.

Me too! I actually met James May once and he called it out. So embarrassing!

What! Grin I mean, terrible but also amazing!

I like my hair in a short bob, messy. I've had it long and in my early 20s I grew it very long. It didn't quite suit me and when I went to a very nice hairdressers to get it cut I joked that it made me look like Neil from the Young Ones. And he agreed!

Blarn · 14/06/2023 21:03

I miss my twenty year old Neil face now to be honest!

The frilly poufy fashions of today don't suit me at all, either.

To be honest, I don't think they suit many people, other than tall, slim 20-somethings. I'm shortish with narrow shoulders: they make me look like a child dressing up in its mother's clothes - except that the child has my wizened face...

Oblomov23 · 14/06/2023 21:25

I've been described as Bridget Jones, and Sandi Toksvig. Both highly insulting.

Dyke chic upgrade- massive compliment! it's a strong, fierce look. I would have loved that.

This whole thread is so funny! I'm trying to embrace the more androgynous style, but that's also difficult when you're short and not very distinguished looking...
