I have turned into Eddie Izzard, but without the name and fame...

I have always had very masculine features. Think square jaw, big potato nose, thick eyebrows etc. It's only got worse as I have gotten older. My eyes used to be large and helped balance my nose; now have gotten smaller with time. I also photograph really badly and get photographed a lot in my job!

Today I was wearing a quite simple print shift dress, caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror, and thought Eddie "Suzy"Izzard. Or Grayson Perry. Urgh.

I don't even know why I am posting this. Maybe misery loves company? I don't believe in cosmetic surgery and won't be getting it, so I just have to find some way of living with this.

The frilly poufy fashions of today don't suit me at all, either.

@MyOtherCarIsAPorsche That photo has really made me laugh! You look like you're being lead astray by a small Scottish Granny!

Mingomang · 13/06/2023 21:16

@Capricornandproud please can I have the link to the dresses?

Katrinawaves · 13/06/2023 21:17

I once met Eddie through work and we were wearing the same outfit. And he looked better in it than I did 😊

Oh and just in case we are forming a variety show of male lookie likes, I can't wear round glasses or I look like Ozzy Osbourne...

Round glasses make me look like a wrinkly greying Harry Potter.

CharlotteRumpling · 13/06/2023 21:29

Gosh this took off! You are all so funny.
And that photo is priceless.

I think you may be taking this too seriously @LillyoftheMountain. I am not obsessing about this, and am not going to be doing anything major. But I do like the idea of going the Fiona Shaw way. In winter, I do wear a lot of wideleg trousers and black jumpers, trying to channel Katherine Hepburn! In summer, I feel a bit confused.

What’s wrong with OP looking a state? Not that I believe she does. But why are women expected to look polished all the time?

Well she's the one complaining about it !😂

AutumnCrow · 13/06/2023 21:35

Tessisme · 13/06/2023 13:19

'dyke chic upgrade'

Personally, I'd just take that as a compliment! I mean, she could have worded it better, but if it's the look I'm thinking of, I reckon it's fab.

I do wish I were brave enough to go for the full KD Lang look

Clafoutie · 13/06/2023 22:04

I don’t have much helpful advice OP and can only raise you a salute of solidarity! I often feel I resemble Jimmy Connors, though without the athleticism obviously. But I tell you what, your post, from your username ( absolutely brilliant!) onwards suggested to me that you are a very cool person, if that is any help. I hope that I am not misunderstanding your humorous tone, as I would hate to seem I was laughing at you, but sending you a wave and asking you to give yourself a break and a good hug! Flowers

I've always been one to be led astray 🤣

She's my type of person. She's (my twin) currently sat (propped) outside on the bench because my husband knocked her off the top of the bouncy castle stored in the garage and her legs fell off.

The grandchildren have really taken to her so the likeness must be true. (They're not scared by her appearance, as intended for a Halloween prop.)

Unfortunately, my twin has lived with us for 4 or 5 years now and things have deteriorated since then. Not long ago, I thought I saw my father inside M&S looking particularly ill and miserable - it was my reflection.

Capricornandproud · 13/06/2023 23:53

Of course! Totally forgot. Some of the responses here are brilliant 😂 These are very true to size, really comfy and perfect for a commute or home working:

Have them in burgundy, white and black and just ordered pink!

Rainydaysandicecream · 14/06/2023 01:19

Do they wrinkle @Capricornandproud?
I love natural fabrics but hate the wrinkles. (I'm not stylish enough to carry them off and end up looking a scruffy, rumpled mess.)

CharlotteRumpling · 14/06/2023 07:19

Thanks @Clafoutie! That's very kind of you to say. Everyone on this thread is very cool..I definitely meant it more humorously than anything else, though I have the odd pang when I look in a mirror. Most of the time, I focus more on what I do than what I look like. My mum is a good role model.

Why can’t women and men wear what they want without being judged. Or in your case laughed at?

You sound like someone from an education website who is trying too hard. Even the name is similar.

LillyoftheMountain · 13/06/2023 20:39

Again thinking we have to totter around. Despite looking like a man you are still a woman regardless of what woo woo you believe Grin

Is that a passive aggressive laugh?

Williehollobooby · 14/06/2023 12:23

I always think Pink is a beautiful female version on Eddie izzard. Maybe look at her photos for tips,

Comefromaway · 14/06/2023 13:52

I realised several years ago that shift dresses are very unflattering. I need something with a waist. (I'm 49, 5 ft 3 and a size 12-14.)

Seasalt do some nice dresses and I recently got some from Mountain Warehouse & Trespass of all places. I definitely do not do flounces. Also anything with a nipped in waist. My leather jacket is great for this.

QueenOfThorns · 14/06/2023 14:11

I meant to link the ‘rust’ version, but it unfortunately defaulted to black!

ihavespoken · 14/06/2023 14:26

For the heavy metal fans amongst you, at 14 a boy in my class said I looked like Jason Newsted of Metallica. Harsh but true, and my recent experiment with natural curls again has just made things worse. I now look more like Lou out of Lou and Andy. This thread has spurred me on to go back to my bob at my next appointment! Thankyou!

DrCoconut · 14/06/2023 14:32

I'm very masculine looking too. I remember looking at some holiday photos and thinking I looked like a rugby player in drag in most of them. I tend to agree that going for a more "severe" look works better than trying against the odds to look really feminine. I now have short hair, shaved up one side and tend to wear jeans, hoodies, shorts or harem pants in summer. My DS says I look like a protester 🤣. I feel more confident like this, I feel like I'm working with what I have rather than against it.

BinkyBeaufort · 13/06/2023 11:22

Op I sympathise.
Looked in the mirror one day and saw Jimmy Saville. So I had my white bob restyled and now look like Myra Hindley.

Oooh excellent Grin

Surely that should be Sad but True? :)

This made me chuckle as I actually had my hair cut specifically like his when I was a teen, he had a fine mop that present me, with post partum hair loss can only dream of!

Moredarkchocolateplease · 14/06/2023 14:47

Dear OP i haven't rtft but it sounds like COS would be your bag clothes wise.

No frilly puffy stuff. Clean lines, expensive looking fabrics and no 'prints'
