I have turned into Eddie Izzard, but without the name and fame...

I have always had very masculine features. Think square jaw, big potato nose, thick eyebrows etc. It's only got worse as I have gotten older. My eyes used to be large and helped balance my nose; now have gotten smaller with time. I also photograph really badly and get photographed a lot in my job!

Today I was wearing a quite simple print shift dress, caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror, and thought Eddie "Suzy"Izzard. Or Grayson Perry. Urgh.

I don't even know why I am posting this. Maybe misery loves company? I don't believe in cosmetic surgery and won't be getting it, so I just have to find some way of living with this.

The frilly poufy fashions of today don't suit me at all, either.

Op I sympathise.
Looked in the mirror one day and saw Jimmy Saville. So I had my white bob restyled and now look like Myra Hindley.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 thank you for this

😂Michael Palin checking in here. I mean, he is obviously a lovely chap, but not the look I'm going for.

@flabbergastedandfumbletooted I really like the sound of your restyle.

OP, I think a really good haircut and getting your eyebrows done will make a huge difference. Surely you are a candidate for the much loved of mumsnet COS? And what I believe is known as a pop of colour will make a big difference to a plain shirtdress.

Why can’t women and men wear what they want without being judged. Or in your case laughed at?

Human nature I guess? We constantly judge the people around us, anyone who says they don't is talking bollocks.

Paperbagsaremine · 13/06/2023 13:05

I've some great photos from late 202 where Brian May appears to be wearing my clothes... !

I now spend a lot of money on having my hair dyed (tried box, hair turned to straw).

Can't hurt booking a personal shopper slot with - and this is important - the oldest stylist JL has, unless you have a word of mouth recommendation. Thus, awareness of fashion will have been tempered by decades of brutal reality, and she won't come back with an armful of stuff that would have looked great on a 30 years younger you.

In retirement I've had the time to clothes shop more and think about what I want to buy and why (not quite a S+B spreadsheet of things needed, but in my head, yes).

The developer who implements a usable way of virtually trying on clothes should be canonised. Anyone working a full week quails at the thought of hitting the shops for maybe 1/4 of their whole weekend, at peak hours, with no guarantee that they'll find anything to spend their hard earned cash on.

More specifically I like Cos and Mint Velvet but a JL appt with the overt aim of trying a lot of different styles would be the way to start.

Tessisme · 13/06/2023 13:19

'dyke chic upgrade'

Personally, I'd just take that as a compliment! I mean, she could have worded it better, but if it's the look I'm thinking of, I reckon it's fab.

Why don't you get lost with your TRA. The OP doesn't want to look like a man in drag, someone parodying women. She wants to look like an actual woman, because she is one.

I realised the other day that if I just let my hair dry naturally its no longer 'casual French chic' but I look like James May.

OMG I actually do look like James May’s long lost twin🫣

Life is so unfair, I’ve always been overweight, never pretty but accepted my ordinariness and now I am morphing in to an unfunny bloke with long hair🤪

I definitely need to become a hermit!

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 13/06/2023 19:20

I once walked home carrying a large Halloween figure of an ugly old hag -
long straggly hair, sunken eyes, hooked nose, pointy chin with wart etc. It was holding a silver tray on which to place trick or treat goodies, which I was going to place at the door.

My husband took my photo with 'it' to share with the rest of the family, pointing out it was my twin.

I thought it was quite funny until I realised 'we' did look similar.

I'll post a photo if I find it.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 13/06/2023 19:24

Found it!

I have turned into Eddie Izzard, but without the name and fame...
Joolsin · 13/06/2023 19:34

In fairness, @MyOtherCarIsAPorsche, while there may be ... similarities ... you might be pleased when I say you definitely look more like her younger sister, not her twin!!

I've noticed this. I think it's a peri/menopausal thing. Natures way of making us unattractive so that men don't mistakenly think our ovaries are working.

I almost started a thread on menopausal ugliness. I'm just going with it but having to adjust things so that I don't look too drag. Eg shoulder pads, mascara.

I read somewhere that both men and women start to look more androgynous as we age because of the loss of sex hormones, so I think its very much a thing!

Second PPs about getting your brows done, it seem to make SO much difference it's amazing.

LillyoftheMountain · 13/06/2023 09:40

What’s wrong looking like Eddie "Suzy" Izzard?

She doesn't want to look like a block of a man in a dress.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/06/2023 19:37

Oh and just in case we are forming a variety show of male lookie likes, I can't wear round glasses or I look like Ozzy Osbourne...

CliffsofMohair · 13/06/2023 19:39

flabbergastedandfumbletooted · 13/06/2023 10:21

I could say the same. All my features, that with the glow of youth, were at best 'ok' now have squared out and I look very blocky and masculine in features. Not helped by a meno belly that gives me the same shape as a 'dad bod'. Ive had hair issues with meno - so had to go very short which does me no favours at all.

I tried to reinvent myself with googling what suited my features, mainly to be comfortable in myself - I went to one of those colour consultants and paid to have a style guide, i also went to a renowned hairdresser who cut a very lovely a upward quiff. I got some new great glasses and some lovely makeup......

.....and a lady at work called it my 'dyke chic upgrade'

I was crushed.

You sound fabulous. I imagine you as bold and commanding.

TheLurpackYears · 13/06/2023 19:43

Nothing useful to add, but Hi, from Noel Fieldings grumpy frumpy twin sister.

Why don't you get lost with your TRA. The OP doesn't want to look like a man in drag, someone parodying women. She wants to look like an actual woman, because she is one.

In what way am I a TRA? Not that there is anything wrong if someone is. I’m just questioning why we are judging a woman for looking like a ‘man’. Despite what you might think, OP is a woman even if she thinks she can ‘pass’ as a man.

Do you expect us all to totter around looking like sex dolls for your pleasure?

JaneJeffer · 13/06/2023 20:31

Again with the tottering Hmm

God this made me realy belly laugh.

LillyoftheMountain · 13/06/2023 20:39

Again thinking we have to totter around. Despite looking like a man you are still a woman regardless of what woo woo you believe Grin

LillyoftheMountain · 13/06/2023 09:40

What’s wrong looking like Eddie "Suzy" Izzard?

Eddie Izzard, despite his assertions to the contrary, is a man. OP is, presumably, a woman.

I wouldn't want to look like him either.

I'm sure OP doesn't actually look anything like him tbf.

Laiste · 13/06/2023 20:52

The tottering thing is odd ...

The rest of this thread is very funny 😃 It reminds me that above all else a sense of humour is our most precious attribute.

SusiePevensie · 13/06/2023 21:01

I would definitely take dyke chic as a compliment.

LillyoftheMountain · 13/06/2023 21:02

You don’t seem like you have much of a sense of humour. Just a lot of misogynistic ideas about what a ‘woman’ is 😂
